Chapter 48 - Runaway Saviors

Naela charged her breath again, ignoring the protests of the elf. She watched the sprinting tower knight raise his shield and cast his spell. The wyvern leapt into the air, flapping her wings and flying over the knight at the last instant. Her body crashed through glass, and she whipped around, locking onto her target.

The gargantuan knight raised his tower shield. He noticed vines starting to coil from the ground again, and he leapt before they could take him. His angelic wings flapped, and he raced towards the wyvern.

Naela's breath finally finished, and she launched an enormous pink fireball. She didn't know if it was her eyes playing tricks on her, but she swore she could see the knight grin beneath his helmet. As if her own fireball would become her undoing. He confidently flapped forwards, but before the hot fire could impact him, something different happened.

The flames scattered into pieces as if it was a living organism, and from it, new organisms rose. It became thousands of pink bats, acting with the same instructions. Half of them flew left, and half of them flew right. All of them arrived behind the gargantuan tower knight, and for the first time, Naela heard the creature's panicked moans.

It did not speak words that the wyvern knew, but it hurriedly tried to move the shield. Naela noticed that the spell disabled when the shield started to move. I guess I should deliver a double attack for good measure.

Her flaming bats impacted the back of the knight hard, and the explosion ripped through its armor. Naela didn't know if her mistress was watching, but she was sure that she now had everyone's attention. More pink hotness coiled in her mouth, and she met her new spell with an old spell.

Naela's scorching pink ray attacked from the front, piercing even more of the creature's armor, and creating an enormous hole in its chest. She watched as its skin melted and turned into ashes on the wind. The monstrosity died too fast for her to even see what it was beneath its armor, and much like creature's in the dungeon, even this one's ashes turned into particles of mana.

The wyvern didn't realize how much that one spell would drain her. When she started descending, she felt lightheaded, and all of her energy evaporated from one fight. She flapped slowly back into the castle and arrived to a familiar elf, holding the man responsible for all of this hostage with her vines.

"You've grown a lot, Naela."

The wyvern transformed back into her human frame and stumbled a little. "I would say that my mistress is the one responsible for this. If not for her, I would be dead."

Fianis's face paled, and she looked away from Neala, not meeting the wyvern's eyes. "I see."

"It's not your fault, you know. I have already forgiven all of you for leaving me." The wyvern sighed, noticing the elf's surprised expression. Naela pointed towards the man on his knees wrapped in vines with red flowers. "What about him?"

"As I am sure you remember, these flowers will keep him incapacitated. I will deliver him to the king."

The wyvern remembered the awkward atmosphere in the throne room, but her eyes caught something familiar. Something she longed for. Behind a wall, a vampiric witch smiled and gestured to the wyvern. It was in time for the sound of knight's footsteps coming from the other direction.

Naela looked towards Fianis awkwardly, wanting to speak, but words never left her mouth.

The elf sighed before smiling. "Go to her."

Naela didn't need to be told twice. She ran through the castle corridor and arrived at a silly waiting vampire in a princess dress.

"I was thinking that we could make like bandits, and..."

Before the vampire finished her statement, Naela was already acting in both of their best interests. She scooped Elanore up into a princess carry and flapped her tired wings. They took to the sky, leaving the chaos of the battlefield beneath them. Despite her tired flappers, the city below them faded away until it was nothing more than a spec.

Naela looked into her vampire's reddening face and grinned. "You look adorable like this, mistress."

"You can't just scoop up a princess and take her away from a castle, you know? This should violate at least a few international laws. It might even be a war crime."

"What are you talking about, mistress?"

Naela rolled her eyes, and before Elanore could answer, she sealed the vampire's lips with a kiss. She explored her princess's mouth, and there were no protests from her captive.

"It seems that my mistress enjoys having international laws violated."

"W-well, this time you saved me from royal duties. There is a lot of paperwork involved when an invasion happens." Elanore pointed towards a spot in the woodlands beneath them. "Can you land us over there, my dear captor?"

Naela nodded and smiled at the new nickname, but if she had to be honest, both of them were captors and captives. They both captured each other's hearts, and they were captives of this thing called love. This idea that the vampire had once called a disease. "I guess we are both full of disease now, mistress?"

The vampire's face was one of confusion as they both landed. It wasn't long after they touched the ground that two cat-eared people showed themselves. Elanore looked awkwardly between the two felines and the wyvern.

"Look," Elanore said, "I can explain."

Naela smiled wryly and looked at the two cat people they'd seen when they first arrived at the city. "Let me guess, mistress. They are recruits for the energy drink queendom?"

The wyvern watched as Elanore's face went pale. She acted like a child that had been caught with her hands in a cookie jar. Naela found the behavior endearing, but she cleared her throat. "Prepare to be scolded later, mistress."

Elanore swallowed nervously, but her savior came in the form of the little cat girl.

Taliyana rushed in front of Elanore defensively. "You can't scold her! She saved us!"
