Chapter 370 - The Probe

After their exchange at the technical seminar, Jieming and Rex shared a knowing glance.

They didn't acknowledge each other immediately. Instead, as the event wrapped up, they naturally exchanged personal contact codes, just like any other pair of tech enthusiasts.

A few days later, Jieming received a message from Rex on his communicator, inviting him to his residence for a "deep dive into technical matters."

"This guy called me crazy back then, but when it comes to gambling with his life, he's even crazier than I am."

Staring at the text on his communicator, Jieming took a deep breath, his nerves visibly on edge.

After a moment to compose himself, Jieming looked up at the luxurious villa before him.

This was Rex's home, located in an upscale neighborhood on the outskirts of Planet Anvil's capital city. It was a grand residence, featuring a private courtyard and a minimalist yet striking architectural design.

Jieming followed the directions inside. The interior was spacious, but the furnishings were exceptionally sparse, bordering on austere.

"Welcome, Jieming." Rex stood in the center of the living room.

Rex had already shed his work clothes, swapping them for a comfortable set of casual wear. The glasses still rested on the bridge of his nose.

But something in his eyes had changed—a suppressed thrill and a newfound sharpness.

"Rex, it's been a while," Jieming nodded, his gaze sweeping the corners of the room. He could faintly sense the fluctuations of a weak energy field.

It wasn't transcendent energy, but rather technology native to this world—equipment designed to shield against conventional surveillance and signal detection.

Clearly, this was a meticulously crafted safehouse.

Skipping the pleasantries, the two sat down at a table covered with a metal panel and cut straight to the chase.

"How did you wake up?" Jieming asked first.

Rex pushed up his glasses, a flash of relief crossing his eyes. "Thanks to this," he said, pointing to his temple. "The 'Weaver of Laws' nano-intelligent computer chip I implanted in myself. This thing... isn't suppressed by this godforsaken place."

After his explanation, Jieming finally understood. The intelligent computer chip named "Weaver of Laws" was Rex's masterpiece in the field of mechanics.

The moment Rex was thrown into this world, the "Weaver of Laws" chip detected massive environmental anomalies and memory logic conflicts. It began issuing a continuous alarm deep within his obscured consciousness.

This alarm was like a constant stream of background noise, washing over him for years. Finally, five years ago, it broke through the dam of his false memories like water wearing away stone, restoring his clarity.

"You can still use your transcendent powers?!" Jieming's heart hammered in his chest.

He instinctively turned his inner vision to his dantian. The Five Aggregates Rainbow Transformation Mirror and the Profound Astral Red Dust Barrier that encircled him remained as dormant as dead objects, showing no reaction.

Why can Rex's intelligent computer chip still function?

"I've been studying the 'rules' of this world for years," Rex said, seemingly reading his confusion. He continued his explanation, "I discovered a key point: as long as an object's manufacturing process and final form can be understood and replicated by this world's existing technology—meaning, in theory, if given the blueprints and materials, a factory or laboratory in this world could build it—then it can operate normally here, unaffected by 'transcendent rejection.'"

He paused, emphasizing, "My 'Weaver of Laws' chip was crafted and bound using wizardry, but its core architecture, computational logic, and even the manufacturing principles of most of its nano-scale components can be understood and partially implemented in the top-rank laboratories of this world. That's why the 'Rules' recognize it."

"Recognized by the Rules..."

Jieming felt as if he'd been struck by lightning, freezing in place.

He suddenly understood—it was a blind spot right under his nose!

Coming from a purely technological world and then experiencing both the immortal cultivation and wizardry systems after his transmigration, Jieming had subconsciously pitted "technology" against the "transcendent." He had assumed the suppression in this world targeted all forms of "transcendent power."

But in reality, the foundation of wizard civilization was knowledge!

Countless spells, alchemy, and rune systems were all based on a profound understanding and application of the universe's rules. A vast amount of that knowledge could be replicated through purely technical means, just in a different form!

Rex's chip had exploited this very loophole—it was, in essence, a condensation of "purely mechanical knowledge," and its form of existence conformed to the "physical rules" of this plane.

"It seems... I, too, have overlooked something else due to the same cognitive blind spot..." Jieming suddenly fell into deep thought.

A vague intuition told him that this principle of "rule recognition" might point to a more crucial truth he had been ignoring all along. But the flash of inspiration vanished before he could grasp it.

Jieming didn't dwell on this for long, however, and quickly began exchanging information with Rex.

They already understood the basic intelligence, so Rex supplemented a point Jieming had missed:

"When intelligent beings of this plane die unexpectedly, they are reborn after their memories are erased. However, it seems that those who die naturally do not revive..."

As an orphan here, Rex had encountered more people and witnessed more unusual cases: "But the sample size is too small. I'm not sure if this is a widespread phenomenon or just a special case."

"I see..." Jieming admitted, realizing he had completely missed that point.

In turn, he shared his own findings with Rex—confirming that the control method wasn't illusion magic or mind control, but some more unique power, and discussing the world's unexpectedly vast and tangible nature.

After their exchange, a heavy silence fell between them.

They had pieced together more fragments than any single individual could, yet the puzzle remained incomplete. The most critical core—the mastermind's true identity, their ultimate goal, and the key to breaking free from this cage—remained shrouded in mist.

After a moment, Jieming let out a long sigh and leaned back in his chair, a self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "It seems the one... or the thing... pulling the strings doesn't care much for two slightly more active ants like us."

Rex nodded, his eyes gleaming with cold analysis behind his glasses. "Ever since I discovered that sentient beings in this world could be reborn, I've suspected that the entity behind this plane might be relatively 'benevolent.' This seems to confirm that theory."

Indeed, both men had known from the start that this meeting was fraught with risk.

Rex's room could block conventional surveillance, but both Jieming and Rex understood that such measures were utterly useless against the behind-the-scenes existence.

This meeting was, in fact, a probe—a test to gauge the entity's attitude toward awakened beings like them.

That was why Jieming had hesitated before agreeing to meet.

And although he hadn't yet observed the phenomenon of sentient beings being reborn, Jieming had already reached the same conclusion as Rex. After all, his own fake parents and old friend were proof enough that the entity wasn't out to kill them. That was why he had decided to take the gamble today.

And from the results of their probe, it seemed they had both bet correctly.
