Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: The Rift Beneath

The celebration of the centennial lasted thirty days.

Jarine danced at the opening festival—something he hadn't done in centuries—his old body moving with surprising grace. Ren partnered with him, the god-turned-mortal laughing like a child. Aegis stood nearby, its energy form pulsing with rhythms that made the music deeper, richer.

Children ran everywhere, their joy infectious. The twins—Jarine and Sera, now ten years old—chased each other through the crowds, their laughter weaving into the Hearth-Song.

It was perfect.

It was the last perfect moment they would know for a long time.

---

On the thirty-first day, the ground shook.

Not an earthquake—Jarine had felt those. This was different. Deeper. A tremor that seemed to come from the very core of reality, shaking not just the ground but the Life-Web itself.

The guardians materialized instantly, their ancient forms tense.

"The deep places," the first guardian said. "Something stirs."

The second guardian pulsed with concern. "Older than us. Older than the valley. Much older."

The third guardian's form flickered through a thousand shapes. "I have no memory of this. Nothing. It is... beyond."

Jarine extended his Life-Web Sense downward, through soil, through stone, through the deep tunnels where dwarves had mined for centuries. Below even them, below where anything had ever gone, something moved.

A presence. Vast. Ancient. Angry.

"The rift," a voice whispered.

Jarine turned. Marin stood there—the current Marin, seventh of that name, her scales pale with fear. "The deep ones spoke to me. In dreams. They said a rift is opening. Below everything. Below reality."

"A rift to where?"

"To nowhere. To nothing. To the space between worlds where things that should not exist have been waiting." She gripped his arm. "Jarine, they're coming."

The valley mobilized faster than it ever had.

Thinkers calculated the rift's growth rate—exponential, they reported. Days, maybe hours, until it breached the surface. The Mother extended her mycelial network downward, mapping the deep places, feeling for the intruders. The Mer called upon the deep ones, begging for information, for help, for anything.

The deep ones responded with silence.

Not refusal—fear. Even they were afraid.

Jarine stood at the edge of the great tunnel the dwarves had excavated, staring into darkness that seemed to hunger.

Aegis appeared beside him. "Commander. I can descend. Fight them in the depths."

"No. If you fall, we lose our strongest defender."

"Then what do we do?"

Jarine closed his eyes. The Life-Web sang around him—the valley, the people, the life he had nurtured for so long. He could feel their fear, their hope, their trust.

"We do what we've always done," he said. "We prepare. We fight. We survive."

He opened his eyes.

"And we call in every favor we've ever earned."

The first wave came at midnight.

They emerged from the rift like nightmares given form—beings of shadow and hunger, their shapes shifting and wrong, their presence erasing reality where they touched. The valley's defenses activated immediately—energy shields, automated turrets, the guardians' ancient power.

But the shadows ate through them.

Not destroying—unmaking. Making it so they had never existed.

Aegis met them at the rift's edge, its demi-god power flaring. For every shadow it destroyed, two more emerged. For every step it advanced, the rift widened.

"Commander!" its voice echoed through the Life-Web. "There are too many! I cannot hold!"

Jarine ran toward the battle, Ren at his side, the twins' faces haunting his thoughts. He would not let them die. He would not.

At the rift's edge, he stopped.

The darkness below was absolute. Not empty—full. Full of things that had waited since before reality began, hungry for the light, the life, the existence they had been denied.

"Jarine." Ren's voice was quiet. "The Bazaar token. Use it."

He pulled the disc from his pouch. It pulsed with faint light, warm against his palm.

"For our darkest hour," he whispered.

He activated it.

The sky tore.

Not like the rift—this was different. A deliberate opening, controlled, purposeful. Through it descended beings of pure light, their forms too bright to look at, their presence making the shadows scream.

The Auctioneer led them.

"Founder," its voice resonated. "You called. We answered."

"The rift—the things below—they're unmaking reality."

"We see." The Auctioneer's form shifted, studying the darkness. "These are the Old Ones. The ones who existed before existence. They were locked away at the dawn of time. Now something has freed them."

"Can you stop them?"

"We can contain them. For a time." The Auctioneer looked at him with those terrible, beautiful eyes. "But the lock must be reforged. And that requires a sacrifice."

"What kind of sacrifice?"

"Something precious. Something living. Something that carries the essence of this world." The Auctioneer's gaze moved past him, to the valley, to the people gathered at its edge. "A life. Freely given, to seal the rift forever."

Silence.

Then Ren stepped forward.

"Take me."

Jarine grabbed his arm. "No. Absolutely not."

"Jarine, listen—"

"No! I won't let you—"

"I'm already dying." Ren's voice was calm, gentle, final. "The mortal form... it's been a century. I can feel the end approaching. Weeks, maybe months. This way, my death means something."

"It always meant something. Every moment with you meant something."

Ren smiled—that warm, genuine expression Jarine had come to love. "Then let this moment mean the most."

He pulled free and walked toward the Auctioneer.

The beings of light parted for him, their radiance softening as he passed. At the rift's edge, he turned one last time.

"Thank you, Jarine. For everything. For teaching me to care. For showing me what life really means." Tears streamed down his face. "I'll be waiting. In whatever comes next."

"Ren—"

"Tell the twins their Uncle Ren loved them. Tell the valley I'll watch from wherever I end up." He smiled. "And keep planting. Always keep planting."

He stepped into the light.

The light blazed.

The shadows screamed.

And when it faded, the rift was gone. The valley stood silent, untouched, saved.

But Ren was nowhere to be found.

Jarine fell to his knees, centuries of grief finally breaking through. Aegis knelt beside him, its energy form pulsing with shared sorrow. The guardians gathered close, their ancient presence a comfort and a wound.

"He's gone," Jarine whispered. "My friend. My brother. He's gone."

The valley mourned with him.

The days that followed were the darkest Jarine had known.

He sat beneath the Sky-Tree, unmoving, unseeing, unliving. The valley brought food he didn't eat. Spoke words he didn't hear. Offered comfort that couldn't reach him.

The twins visited daily, their young faces worried. "Grandfather? Uncle Ren said to tell you stories. He said you'd want to hear them."

Jarine didn't respond.

Aegis stood constant guard, its presence a silent witness to grief. The guardians circled, their ancient wisdom helpless against such loss.

On the seventh day, the Mother spoke through her fungi.

Jarine. The Network feels your pain. It echoes through the Life-Web, touching every soul. Your people grieve with you. But they also need you.

He didn't answer.

Ren's sacrifice was not for you to fade. It was for you to live. To carry his memory forward. To tend the garden he helped build.

A long silence.

Then, slowly, Jarine raised his head.

"He wanted me to keep planting."

Yes.

"He wanted the twins to know him."

Yes.

"He wanted—" Jarine's voice broke. "He wanted me to be okay."

He wanted you to live. Fully. Completely. Now.

Jarine stood, his old body protesting. The twins ran to him, embracing him with fierce young arms.

"Grandfather! You're standing!"

"I am." He held them close, tears streaming. "I'm standing. And I'm going to keep standing. For Ren. For all of you. For everything."

The years that followed were different.

Jarine carried Ren with him always—in every garden planted, every child taught, every moment of joy or sorrow. The school beneath the Sky-Tree was renamed the Ren Academy. The twins told stories of their Uncle Ren to anyone who would listen. The valley remembered.

Aegis stayed close, its presence a comfort and a reminder. The demi-god had grown fond of Ren during their travels, and his loss had affected it deeply.

"He taught me what it means to care," Aegis said one evening. "Before him, I was function. After him, I became more."

"He did that for everyone."

"For you most of all." Aegis's form pulsed warmly. "You were his teacher, his friend, his brother. He loved you, Commander."

Jarine nodded, tears in his eyes. "I loved him too."
