Chapter 73 - Chapter 73: The Garden of Souls

The door opened onto twilight.

Jarine stepped forward, his feet meeting soft grass that glowed faintly in the dim light. Above him, a sky of deep purple held neither sun nor moon nor stars—just an endless, gentle radiance that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The air was warm and still, carrying the scent of flowers he didn't recognize.

Ren emerged beside him, his mortal form immediately relaxing. "This place... it feels different. Peaceful."

Jarine extended his Life-Web Sense and found... abundance. Life everywhere—plants, flowers, trees—but also something else. Presences. Faint, gentle, aware.

"We're not alone," he said quietly. "There are... spirits here."

As if in answer, a figure materialized before them.

It was translucent, glowing with soft light—a woman in flowing robes, her face kind and ancient. She smiled at them with eyes that held centuries.

"Welcome, travelers. You have found the Garden of Souls."

Jarine bowed slightly. "I'm Jarine. This is Ren. We didn't mean to intrude."

"You are not intruding. All are welcome here who come in peace." The spirit gestured at the garden around them. "This is where souls come to rest, between lives. A place of peace, of memory, of waiting."

Ren's divine nature stirred. "I know of such places. But I've never seen one. Never visited."

"Few living beings do. You are... special." The spirit studied them with gentle curiosity. "You carry many lives between you. Many deaths. Many gardens."

Jarine felt a strange pull—a recognition, a familiarity. "Have we met before? In some other life?"

"Perhaps. Perhaps not. Time moves differently here." The spirit smiled. "But come. Walk with me. There is someone who wishes to see you."

They walked through gardens of impossible beauty.

Flowers that sang softly as they passed. Trees whose leaves whispered memories. Streams of liquid light that flowed without sound. And everywhere, spirits—some translucent, some nearly solid, some barely visible—resting, walking, waiting.

The spirit led them to a clearing where a figure sat beneath a glowing tree.

Jarine's heart stopped.

It was Sera.

She looked as she had in his vision—not young, not old, but ageless. Her eyes held the wisdom of decades, the peace of centuries, the love of a lifetime. When she saw him, she rose and smiled.

"Jarine. You came."

He couldn't speak. Couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.

Ren touched his shoulder gently. "Go. I'll wait here."

Jarine walked forward on legs that felt like water. Sera met him halfway, and when they embraced, it was like coming home after a thousand years.

"How?" he whispered. "How are you here?"

"This is the Garden of Souls. Where those who have lived and loved and mattered come to rest between lives." She pulled back to look at him, her eyes wet. "I've been waiting for you. Hoping you'd find your way here."

"You knew I'd come?"

"I hoped. That's what you taught me—to hope." She laughed softly. "You taught me so much. How to garden. How to lead. How to love. I carried it all with me, every day of my life."

Jarine wept. "I should have been there. At the end. I should have—"

"You were. In my heart. In my memories. In every garden I tended, every child I taught, every moment of my long life." She took his hands. "You were always there, Jarine. Always."

They sat beneath the glowing tree for what felt like hours—or years. Time had no meaning here.

Sera told him everything. Her life after he left—the years of leadership, the challenges she faced, the triumphs and sorrows. She told him about Mira's successors, about the valley's growth, about the thousands of lives touched by his legacy.

"You built something eternal," she said. "Not just the valley—the idea of it. The belief that broken things can heal, that abandoned places can bloom, that anyone can matter."

"I just planted seeds."

"That's everything. That's the whole point." She squeezed his hands. "You taught me that. I spent my whole life teaching it to others. And now—" She gestured at the garden, at the spirits around them. "Now I rest. And wait. For whatever comes next."

"What does come next?"

"Another life, perhaps. Another chance to grow, to learn, to love. That's the cycle—the one you've lived so many times." She smiled. "You're special, Jarine. Even among souls, you're special. Three lives, and still going. Still planting."

He shook his head. "I'm just a farmer."

"You're a gardener of souls. Of worlds. Of hope." She leaned forward and kissed his forehead gently. "And I am so proud to have known you."

Ren found them hours—or days—later.

The god's mortal face was wet with tears. "I felt it. Your joy, your grief, your love. Even through my limits, I felt it."

Sera studied him with gentle curiosity. "A god. Learning to be mortal. You've chosen a difficult path."

"The best paths usually are." Ren bowed slightly. "I've heard much about you. The Keeper of Memory. The one who carried Jarine's legacy."

"I carried his love. The rest was just details." She rose and embraced him—a spirit embracing a god, impossible and beautiful. "Thank you for watching over him. For being his friend."

"He's taught me more than I could ever repay."

"That's what he does." She looked at them both, her eyes bright. "Now go. There are other worlds, other gardens. And I'll be here, waiting, whenever you need to rest."

Jarine held her one last time. "I'll find you again. In whatever life comes next."

"I know you will."

Jarine nodded, though every fiber of his being wanted to remain. "Will we remember this?"

"The memory will fade, as all memories of this place do. But the feeling—the love, the peace, the completion—that will stay. That is the gift of Elysia."

They walked back through the glowing gardens, past the singing flowers and whispering trees. At the edge, where the door shimmered, Jarine turned one last time.

Sera stood beneath the tree, waving gently.

He waved back.

Then he stepped through.
