Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: The Valley Revisited

The door opened onto familiar ground.

Jarine stumbled forward, catching himself against the trunk of the Sky-Tree. Its silver-blue leaves rustled above him, their soft light welcoming him home. The Life-Web sang around him—a chorus of recognition, of joy, of love.

Ren emerged behind him, his mortal form immediately relaxing. "This is it. Your valley."

"My home." Jarine breathed deeply, letting the familiar scents fill him—growing things, blooming things, the faint sweetness of the Mer's pond. "I didn't realize how much I missed it until now."

The guardians materialized one by one.

The first—stone and shadow, eternal and patient—inclined its head. "You return."

"I do. With stories to tell and gifts to share."

The second—leaf and blossom, gentle and fierce—brushed against him, its presence healing the small wearinesses he hadn't noticed. "You are tired. Rest."

The third—memory and story, ancient and wise—studied Ren with interest. "And you bring a companion. A god, walking in mortal flesh."

Ren bowed slightly. "I am Ren. God of Reincarnation. Student of your Founder."

The third guardian's form flickered with something like amusement. "Student. Interesting. He has never taught a god before."

"First time for everything."

The days that followed were the most peaceful Jarine had known in decades.

He walked the valley each morning, reconnecting with every corner, every plant, every person. The village had grown again—nearly ten thousand now, spread across the valley floor and into the surrounding hills. New faces mingled with old, their stories woven into the valley's endless tapestry.

Elara—the current Elara, seventh of that name—greeted him with tears and laughter. "You're back! And you brought a friend!"

Ren found himself immediately embraced by the valley's hospitality. The Mer taught him to sing. The dwarves took him into their tunnels, showing him the stone's memory. The children—endless children—climbed on him like he was a jungle gym, their laughter filling the air.

"He's good with them," Jarine observed to the first guardian.

"Gods often are. They recognize the divine, even when it's hidden." The guardian paused. "He is learning. Growing. Becoming something new."

"Aren't we all?"

On the seventh day, Jarine planted the golden spores.

He chose a spot near the Sky-Tree's base, where the soil was richest and the Life-Web strongest. The spores glowed as they touched the earth, pulsing with the Mother's awareness.

As he covered them, he felt it—a connection. Thin, fragile, but real. A thread stretching across worlds, linking his valley to the fungal depths of Mycelia.

You planted, the Mother's voice whispered in his mind. We are there. We are growing.

"Welcome to my world," Jarine whispered back. "Grow well."

The ground stirred. Tiny shoots emerged—golden, glowing, alive. Within hours, they had formed a small circle of fungi, their caps pulsing with the Network's light.

The valley gathered to watch. They had seen many wonders, but this—a bridge to a fungal consciousness—was new even for them.

"What is it?" a child asked.

"A friend," Jarine said. "From a very faraway place. They'll grow here now, and we'll visit them, and they'll visit us through them."

The child's eyes widened. "The mushrooms are people?"

"Not people. But beings. With thoughts and feelings and stories. They've been alone for a very long time. Now they're not."

Ren found Jarine that evening beneath the Sky-Tree.

"You're planting again," the god said, settling beside him. "Even here, in your own home, you're planting."

"It's what I do."

"I know. I've watched you do it across half a dozen worlds." Ren was quiet for a moment. "I think I'm beginning to understand why."

"Why?"

"Because planting is hope. It's believing that something will grow, that the future will be better, that your actions matter." He looked at the new fungi, glowing softly in the twilight. "You've taught me that. Across all these worlds, all these gardens. You've taught me to hope."

Jarine smiled. "That's the best thing anyone's ever said to me."

They sat in comfortable silence, watching the stars emerge.

The weeks passed.

Jarine rested, truly rested, for the first time in longer than he could remember. He walked, he talked, he listened. The valley's stories filled him, renewed him, reminded him why he did what he did.

Ren became a beloved figure—the god who laughed with children, who sang with Mer, who learned dwarven mining songs with patient good humor. He was changing visibly, his mortal form carrying emotions he had never experienced.

One evening, he found Jarine at the Mycelial Grove.

"The Mother spoke to me," Ren said. "Through the fungi. She thanked me for being her friend."

"She's grateful. She's been alone for so long."

"I know. I felt it—her loneliness, her joy, her hope. It nearly broke me." Ren's eyes were wet. "Is this what it's like? To care this much?"

"Yes. It hurts. It's also the best thing there is."

Ren nodded slowly. "I think I'm ready. For the next world. For the next garden."

"So soon?"

"I've rested. Learned. Grown. Now I want to see what else is out there." He looked at Jarine. "If you'll have me."

Jarine laughed. "Always."

The door materialized at the valley's edge, as it always did.

The valley gathered to see them off—thousands of faces, young and old, human and Mer and dwarf and more. The guardians stood at the front, their ancient forms bright with blessing.

"Bring back stories," Elara called.

"And more mushroom friends!" a child added.

Jarine laughed. "I'll do my best."

Ren embraced as many as he could—a task that took nearly an hour. By the end, he was weeping openly, overwhelmed by the love of these people he had known for only two months.

"I understand now," he said to Jarine as they approached the door. "Why you fight so hard for this place. Why you always come back."

"Why?"

"Because this is what it's all about. Not the power, not the achievements, not the gardens. The people. The love." He wiped his eyes. "I've been a god for eons, and I never knew that until now."

Jarine put a hand on his shoulder. "Welcome to being alive."

They stepped through the door together.

Behind them, the valley waved and cheered and hoped.

Ahead, new worlds waited.
