Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: The Frozen Peak

The door opened onto a world of white.

Jarine stumbled forward, his feet sinking into snow up to his knees. The cold hit him instantly—a biting, relentless cold that seemed to seep into his bones despite his layered clothing. Behind him, Ren emerged with a gasp, his mortal form shivering violently.

"Where—where are we?" Ren's teeth chattered.

Jarine looked around. Mountains rose on every side, their peaks lost in clouds of swirling snow. The sky was a pale, endless gray. No sun, no moon, no stars—just diffuse light that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere.

"A mountain range. High altitude. Very cold." He extended his Life-Web Sense and found... something. Faint, but present. Life, struggling against the cold.

"This way." He started walking, Ren stumbling after him.

They walked for hours, the cold never relenting.

Ren's mortal body was suffering. His lips had turned blue, his movements sluggish, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Jarine wrapped an arm around him, sharing what warmth he could, his own body sustained by centuries of Life-Web energy.

"Should have... brought warmer clothes," Ren managed.

"Should have. But we didn't." Jarine spotted something ahead—a dark shape against the endless white. A cave. "There. Shelter."

They stumbled toward it, falling through the entrance in a tangle of limbs and snow.

Inside, the cold was less intense—still freezing, but bearable. The cave extended deeper into the mountain, its walls glittering with ice crystals. And at its heart, a presence.

Jarine felt it immediately—ancient, powerful, angry. But beneath the anger, something else. Grief. Loneliness. Fear.

"Stay here," he told Ren. "Rest. Warm up as best you can."

"Where are you going?"

"To meet whoever—or whatever—lives here."

He walked into the depths.

The cave opened into a vast chamber.

Ice covered every surface, but it was beautiful ice—crystal clear, carved by wind and time into shapes that caught the faint light and scattered it into rainbows. At the chamber's center, curled around a massive pile of frozen treasures, lay a dragon.

It was white, its scales the color of fresh snow, its wings folded against its body like a cloak. It was immense—larger than any dragon Jarine had seen—but it was also wounded. Gashes marred its hide, some old and scarred, others fresh and bleeding. Its eyes, when it opened them, held centuries of pain.

"Another one," it rumbled. Its voice was avalanches and cracking ice. "Come to finish what the hunters started?"

Jarine stopped at a respectful distance. "I'm not a hunter. I'm a gardener."

The dragon's eyes narrowed. "A gardener. In the Frozen Peak. You expect me to believe that?"

"You can believe what you want. But I'm here to help, if you'll let me."

The dragon laughed—a bitter, broken sound. "Help. No one helps. They only take. My kin, my treasure, my life. Taken, all taken."

Jarine's heart ached at the pain in that voice. He had heard it before—in refugees, in survivors, in those who had lost everything.

"I'm sorry," he said. "For what was taken. For what you've suffered." He took a step closer. "But I'm not here to take. I'm here to give, if you'll accept."

The dragon studied him for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, it lowered its head.

"There is something," it whispered. "Something you could do."

"Name it."

"My clutch. My eggs. The hunters... they didn't find them. They're hidden, but they're dying. The cold—it's too much, even for ice dragons. I've tried to keep them warm, but I'm too wounded, too weak." Tears formed in its ancient eyes. "Save them. Please. Save my children."

Jarine found the clutch where the dragon directed—a smaller cave, hidden behind a wall of ice, accessible only through a narrow passage. Five eggs, each the size of his torso, lay in a nest of frozen moss. They were cold—too cold—their surfaces frosted, their internal lights flickering.

He placed his hands on the nearest egg and reached.

His Life-Web energy flowed into it, warming, nourishing, encouraging. The egg responded, its light brightening, its surface warming. One by one, he tended each egg, pouring his strength into them until his vision swam and his limbs trembled.

When the last egg glowed with healthy light, he collapsed beside them.

Ren found him there, hours later, half-frozen but alive.

"You insane, wonderful man," Ren murmured, wrapping him in his own cloak. "You saved them."

"Had to," Jarine managed. "Dragon... needed..."

"Rest now. I'll watch."

Jarine woke to warmth.

Not the cold of the cave—genuine warmth, as if he lay beside a fire. He opened his eyes to find the white dragon curled around him, its body radiating heat like a living furnace. Ren sat nearby, looking amused.

"You're awake," Ren said. "Good. Our host has been... concerned."

The dragon lifted its head, its ancient eyes soft. "You saved them. My children. You gave everything for them."

"Couldn't let them die." Jarine's voice was hoarse. "They're just eggs. Innocent."

"Innocent. Yes." The dragon lowered its head, pressing its snout gently against Jarine's chest. "I am Frostweaver, last of the ice dragons of Glacia. And I owe you a debt that can never be repaid."

"You don't owe me anything."

"I owe you everything." Frostweaver's eyes blazed with sudden intensity. "My children will live because of you. My line will continue. My species will survive." It rose, its massive form filling the chamber. "I offer you a gift, gardener. A scale from my chest—the strongest, the most protective. Wear it, and the cold will never harm you. Fire will fear you. Darkness will flee."

Before Jarine could protest, Frostweaver plucked a scale from its own chest—a disc of pure white, larger than his hand, gleaming with inner light. She placed it in his hands.

"Wear it always," she said. "And know that Frostweaver remembers."

They stayed in the cave for a week, recovering their strength.

Frostweaver's wounds healed under Jarine's careful attention, the Life-Web energy speeding her natural regeneration. The eggs hatched on the fifth day—five tiny dragons, their scales the color of fresh snow, their eyes bright with curiosity and life.

Ren spent hours with them, his divine nature drawn to these new souls. "They're perfect," he said, watching them tumble over each other. "Absolutely perfect."

"They'll grow," Frostweaver said. "In time, they'll be strong. They'll carry on what I've failed to protect."

"You haven't failed. You're still here. They're still here." Jarine looked at the mother dragon, at her ancient eyes, her wounded body, her fierce love. "That's not failure. That's survival."

Frostweaver bowed her great head. "You speak wisdom, gardener. I will remember."

On their last day, Frostweaver carried them to the peak of the highest mountain.

The view was breathtaking—endless white peaks, valleys of ice, a sky finally clear enough to reveal a pale sun. The cold didn't touch them, protected by Frostweaver's scale and the dragon's own warmth.

"There," Frostweaver said, pointing with her snout. "The door. It waits for you."

The familiar shimmer hung in the air at the peak's edge, ready to take them to their next destination.

Jarine turned to the dragon. "Will you be alright?"

"I will. My children grow strong. The hunters have learned to avoid this peak." She smiled—a strange expression on a dragon's face, but unmistakable. "And I have hope now. You gave me that."

"Then my work here is done."

"Your work is never done, gardener. That is your gift and your curse." Frostweaver lowered her head. "Go. Find the next broken place. Heal it. And know that Frostweaver watches."

Ren embraced the dragon—an awkward gesture, given their size difference, but genuine. Jarine placed a hand on her snout one last time.

"Grow well, Frostweaver. Raise your children with love."

"I will."

They stepped through the door.
