Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: The Divine Companion

Jarine sat beneath the Sky-Tree for three days.

Not in meditation—in listening. The valley spoke to him through the Life-Web, telling him everything he had missed in fifty-two years. Births and deaths, joys and sorrows, the endless rhythm of life continuing in his absence. He absorbed it all, let it fill the empty spaces that other worlds had carved in his heart.

On the fourth morning, a presence materialized beside him.

Not Lira—someone else. Someone familiar.

"Jarine." The voice was warm, amused, curious. "You've been busy."

He turned and found the God of Reincarnation sitting cross-legged on the grass, looking for all the world like an ordinary traveler resting from a long journey. His form was human today—an old man with kind eyes and a weathered face, dressed in simple robes.

"Divine One." Jarine started to rise, but the god waved him back.

"Please. After everything, formalities seem ridiculous." He smiled. "Call me Ren. It's what my first worshippers called me, back when I had worshippers."

Jarine settled back against the tree. "What brings you here, Ren?"

"Curiosity. The same thing that's always brought me to you." The god looked around at the valley, at the village, at the life teeming in every direction. "You've built something remarkable here. I've watched it grow across four lifetimes. But lately—" He paused. "Lately, you've been wandering. Other worlds. Other gardens. Other challenges."

"There's more to do than just this valley."

"I know. That's why I'm here." Ren met his eyes. "Take me with you."

Jarine blinked. "What?"

"Take me with you. On your journeys. To other worlds, other gardens, other adventures." The god leaned forward, his eyes bright with something that looked almost like hunger. "I've been watching from a distance for eons. Watching mortals live, die, struggle, grow. But I've never participated. Not really. I want to see what it's like—to be there, in the moment, facing challenges without knowing the outcome."

"You're a god. You can see every outcome."

"Not if I choose not to." Ren smiled. "I can limit myself. Take mortal form. Experience things the way you do—uncertain, vulnerable, alive. I've done it before, briefly. But never with a companion. Never with someone who might actually teach me something."

Jarine studied the god—this ancient being who had given him his second chance, who had defended him before the divine council, who now sat before him asking to be taught.

"Why me?"

"Because you're the most interesting mortal I've ever encountered. You've died three times and come back each time. You've built civilizations from nothing. You've faced gods and monsters and ideas and never once stopped being a gardener." Ren's expression was earnest. "I want to see the universe through your eyes. I want to learn what it means to care about things that won't last forever."

Jarine considered for a long moment.

"Your brothers and sisters won't like this."

"My brothers and sisters haven't liked anything I've done since I gave you that second chance." Ren shrugged. "They'll get over it. Or they won't. Either way, I'm done watching from the sidelines."

"And if you get hurt? If something happens to a god in mortal form?"

"Then I learn what that feels like. Pain. Fear. Mortality." The god's eyes were serious now. "I've existed for longer than your universe has been alive. I've seen everything, known everything, been everything. Except vulnerable. Except human. You can give me that, Jarine. Will you?"

Jarine thought of the worlds ahead—the unknown gardens waiting to be tended, the challenges waiting to be faced. A divine companion would change everything. For better or worse.

"One condition."

"Name it."

"You follow my lead. In battle, in negotiation, in everything. I'm not your servant or your guide—I'm your partner. But when danger comes, you listen. When I say run, you run. When I say fight, you fight. Agreed?"

Ren's smile widened. "Agreed."

He held out his hand.

Jarine took it.

They left the next morning.

The valley gathered to see them off—not with grief this time, but with celebration. The Founder was off on another adventure, and this time he had a god at his side. The stories would be magnificent.

Elara—the current Elara, fifth of that name—embraced him warmly. "Bring back stories. And try not to die. Again."

"I'll do my best."

The guardians blessed their journey, their ancient forms bright with approval. Even the spiders watched from their shadows, their many eyes reflecting something that might have been anticipation.

Ren, in his mortal form, looked almost ordinary. Almost. There was something in his eyes—a depth, a knowing—that marked him as more than human. But he carried no divine aura, no overwhelming presence. Just a traveler, ready for adventure.

"Where first?" he asked as they approached the door.

Jarine considered. So many worlds, so many gardens. But something called to him—a whisper from the Life-Web, a sense of need from somewhere unknown.

"There," he said, pointing at a random direction. "Wherever that is."

The door shimmered, adjusted, opened.

They stepped through together.

The world on the other side was fire and ash.

They stood on a mountainside overlooking a valley in flames. Forests burned. Rivers boiled. The sky was thick with smoke, and the air was heavy with the screams of dying things.

Ren's face paled. "What happened here?"

Jarine's Life-Web Sense extended, feeling for survivors, for life. There was some—faint, scattered, struggling. But the overwhelming impression was of destruction. Deliberate. Malicious.

"This wasn't natural," he said. "Someone did this. Someone with power."

As if in answer, a figure rose from the flames below.

It was massive—a creature of shadow and fire, its form shifting and flowing, its eyes twin pits of hatred. It saw them on the mountainside and smiled.

"More mortals," it rumbled. "More fuel for the fire."

Ren stepped forward, his mortal form blazing with sudden divine light. "You will stop."

The creature laughed. "A god? In mortal flesh? Delicious." It lunged.

Jarine grabbed Ren's arm and ran.

"This way! There are survivors—we need to get them out first!"

"But—"

"No time! Fight later, save now!"

They ran into the burning forest, the creature's laughter echoing behind them.

The first survivors were a family—mother, father, three children—huddled in a cave, their faces streaked with soot and tears. Jarine led them to safety, his Life-Web Sense guiding them through the flames. Ren followed, his divine instincts screaming at him to fight, his mortal body learning the weight of restraint.

"You could have taken it," Ren said as they worked. "You've faced worse."

"Maybe. But not with survivors to protect. Not with a burning forest behind us and who knows what ahead." Jarine pulled another family from the flames. "Fighting isn't always the answer. Sometimes saving is."

Ren was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"I'm learning."

They worked through the night and into the next day.

By the time the flames finally died, they had saved forty-seven people. Forty-seven lives pulled from the inferno, guided to safety, given hope. The fire demon had vanished, driven back by something—perhaps Ren's presence, perhaps its own limits, perhaps simple luck.

The survivors gathered around them in a clearing, their faces a mixture of gratitude and grief.

"Who are you?" their leader asked—an old woman with eyes that had seen too much.

"Travelers," Jarine said. "Gardeners. We saw your world burning and came to help."

"Gardeners." The woman laughed bitterly. "There's nothing left to garden. Everything is ash."

Jarine looked at the devastated landscape—the blackened trees, the scorched earth, the death that covered everything. But beneath it, he could feel it. Life. Waiting. Hoping.

"There's always something left," he said. "You just have to know where to look."

He knelt and placed his hand on the ash-covered soil.

The ground stirred.

A tiny green shoot pushed through the black, then another, then a dozen. Plants that should not exist, should not grow, should not be—rising from the ash, reaching for the sun.

The survivors gasped.

Jarine looked at them, at their shocked faces, their dawning hope.

"Who wants to learn how to garden?"

Ren watched as Jarine worked with the survivors, teaching them how to tend the new growth, how to coax life from the ash-covered soil. His mortal form was tired, his divine instincts frustrated, but something else was growing in him.

Something like respect.

"You really do this everywhere you go," he said that evening, sitting beside Jarine beneath a young tree they had planted. "You find broken places and you fix them. With nothing but patience and seeds."

"That's what gardeners do."

"Is it really that simple?"

Jarine considered. "No. It's hard. It's heartbreaking. It's endless. But it's also the most important thing there is." He looked at the god beside him. "You wanted to learn what it means to care. This is it. Caring about things that might not survive. Helping them anyway."

Ren was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.

"I think I'm beginning to understand."

The fire demon returned on the seventh day.

It rose from the ashes of the valley, larger than before, its eyes blazing with renewed fury. It had fed on the survivors' fear, on their grief, on the hope that Jarine had planted.

"You," it rumbled, focusing on Jarine. "You think you can heal this place? You think your little plants can withstand my fire?"

Jarine stood, his staff in his hand, the Crystal Heart Shard warm in his pocket. "I think they can try."

Ren stepped forward, his mortal form blazing with divine light. "And I think you've made a very serious mistake."

The demon laughed. "A god in mortal flesh. I've already tasted your power—it's weak here, diluted. You can't stop me."

"I don't need to stop you." Ren glanced at Jarine. "He will."

Jarine raised his staff.

The World-Tree's branch blazed with light—not divine light, but something older. Something deeper. The plants around him responded, surging with life, their roots reaching, their vines stretching. The ash-covered ground erupted with growth, a tidal wave of green that swept toward the demon.

The creature screamed as the plants engulfed it—not burning, but smothering. Draining its fire, its fury, its existence.

When the green receded, the demon was gone.

The valley was silent.

Then the survivors cheered.

That night, Ren sat beside Jarine beneath the young tree.

"I couldn't have done that alone," he admitted. "My power here—it's limited. I felt so weak."

"You weren't weak. You were just learning." Jarine smiled. "That's what this journey is about, isn't it? Learning to be something new?"

Ren nodded slowly. "I've been a god for eons. I thought I knew everything. But this—" He gestured at the valley, at the survivors, at the new growth spreading across the ash. "This is something I could never have experienced from my throne."

"And now?"

"Now I want to see more. Learn more. Be more." He looked at Jarine with something like gratitude. "Thank you for taking me with you."

Jarine laughed softly. "Thank you for coming."

They sat together in silence, watching the stars emerge above the healing valley.

Behind them, the door shimmered—waiting for their next adventure.
