Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: The Storm Below

The growl echoed through the chamber like thunder through mountains.

Jaren's hand tightened on his dagger. His mana was nearly depleted—three healing spells had left him with barely enough for one more emergency cast. His body screamed from the burns, the gash on his arm, the exhaustion of combat. But the sound ahead promised no rest, no mercy, no quarter.

He moved forward.

The tunnel opened into a cathedral of stone—a natural cavern so vast that his light-fungi pouch couldn't illuminate its ceiling. Stalactites hung like frozen lightning overhead. Stalagmites rose from the floor like the teeth of some enormous beast. And at the center, waiting with the patience of ages, stood the boss.

It was a Crystal-Winged Wurm.

Twenty feet of segmented horror, its body armored in plates of natural crystal that gleamed in the dim light. Wings—impossible for something its size—folded along its back, their membranes translucent and beautiful. Its head was a nightmare of mandibles and multiple eyes, each one reflecting Jaren's small form with hungry interest.

[Crystal-Winged Wurm - Level 19 Boss]

Health: ??? (Estimated 3,500-4,000)

Abilities: Crystal Shards (Ranged), Wing Gust (AoE), Burrow (Mobility), Petrifying Gaze (Special)

Weaknesses: ??? (Unknown)

Jaren was Level 12. His maximum damage output, even with perfect hits, was maybe 200 before his stamina gave out.

The wurm's multiple eyes blinked.

Then it charged.

---

Jaren dove.

The wurm's massive head slammed into the space where he had been, cracking stone and sending shards flying. He rolled, came up running, his mind racing through possibilities. Direct combat was suicide. He needed the environment. He needed time.

The stalactites.

He ran toward the cavern's edge, where the ceiling was lower, the stone formations denser. The wurm followed, its segmented body undulating with terrifying speed. Crystal shards launched from its wings—Jaren felt one slice past his ear, another tear through his tunic.

He reached the stalactite field and climbed.

Not up—sideways. He scrambled over fallen columns, through narrow gaps, into spaces too small for the wurm to follow. The beast roared in frustration, its bulk unable to penetrate the maze of stone.

But it didn't need to penetrate. It could destroy.

The wurm's wings spread. A gust of wind—impossibly powerful—slammed into the stalactites, shattering some, toppling others. Jaren threw himself behind a massive column as stone rained around him.

When the dust cleared, his path was blocked.

[System Notification]

Critical Situation: Escape Route Compromised.

Wurm Status: Enraged (Damage +20%).

Jaren Health: 67/210.

Mana: 12/180.

---

He was trapped.

The wurm circled the edge of the stalactite field, its multiple eyes tracking his position. It had learned. It wouldn't follow him into the maze again—it would wait, and destroy, and eventually crush him under falling stone.

Jaren's mind raced.

He had Flash-Pods—two left. He had his dagger. He had the Green Mother's Mercy, barely enough mana for one more heal. He had his Life-Web Sense, which told him the wurm was... warm. Alive. Connected to something deeper.

The crystals.

The wurm's armor was made of them—natural formations, grown over centuries. But growth required roots. Required connection. If he could find where those crystals touched the stone, where the wurm's living tissue met the inorganic...

He closed his eyes and reached.

Life-Web Sense extended, feeling for the wurm's presence, its energy, its shape. The beast was a furnace of life force, burning bright against the cavern's cool stone. But beneath that furnace, at the points where its crystal plates anchored to its body, there were gaps. Spaces where life met non-life. Spaces where the connection was weaker.

Spaces where a blade could find purchase.

Jaren opened his eyes.

He had a plan.

---

The wurm roared again, preparing another gust. Jaren didn't wait for it to strike—he ran, straight toward the beast, straight into the open.

The wurm hesitated—confused by this small thing charging directly at its jaws. That hesitation cost it a second.

A second was all Jaren needed.

He threw his first Flash-Pod directly into the wurm's central eye cluster. The explosion of light was blinding—even he, expecting it, had to look away. The wurm screamed, a sound of pure agony, its wings beating wildly as it recoiled.

Jaren was already moving.

He scrambled up the wurm's flank, using its crystal plates as handholds, ignoring the razor edges that sliced his palms. The beast thrashed, trying to throw him off, but he clung with the desperation of someone who knew that falling meant death.

He reached the base of a wing—the point where living tissue met crystal armor. A gap, just wide enough for his blade.

He drove the Aetherium dagger in to the hilt.

The wurm screamed.

Not in anger—in pain. The dagger, forged with Aetherium from another world, carried energies that the wurm's crystal body could not process. It burned through the connection between armor and flesh, sending agony through the beast's entire system.

Jaren held on.

The wurm thrashed harder, slamming into stalactites, into the cavern floor, trying to dislodge him. His grip slipped. His body was battered. Blood flowed from a dozen new wounds.

But he held on.

And he twisted the blade.

---

[System Notification]

Critical Hit: Aetherium Vulnerability Exploited.

Damage: 850 (Ignoring Armor).

Wurm Health: 2,650/3,500.

---

The wurm collapsed.

Not dead—but stunned, its nervous system overwhelmed by the unprecedented pain. Jaren pulled his dagger free and ran, scrambling down the beast's flank, racing toward the cavern's edge before it could recover.

He made it twenty feet before the first crystal shard took him in the shoulder.

The impact spun him around, sent him crashing to the stone. The wurm was rising, its eyes blazing with hatred, its wings spreading for another attack. Jaren struggled to his feet, his left arm useless, his vision swimming.

One Flash-Pod left.

He threw it—not at the wurm's eyes, but at the ceiling above it.

The explosion illuminated a mass of stalactites, already weakened by the wurm's earlier attacks. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, with a groan that built to a roar, the ceiling gave way.

Tons of stone plunged toward the wurm.

The beast tried to move, tried to escape, but its bulk worked against it. The first stalactite pierced its wing. The second shattered against its back. The third—massive, ancient, heavy as a house—crashed directly onto its head.

The wurm went down.

And didn't get up.

Jaren collapsed.

He lay on the cold stone, bleeding from a dozen wounds, his left arm a screaming mess of torn muscle and splintered bone. His mana was gone—completely depleted. His health was at 8/310.

He should have been dead.

Instead, he laughed.

It was a weak sound, barely a whisper, but it was laughter. He had done it. He had soloed a Level 19 boss at Level 12. He had earned 1,200 Merit Points in a single day—more than he'd earned in months. He had survived.

From somewhere in the darkness, a voice spoke.

"By the gods. He's alive."

---

Figures emerged from the tunnel—the other adventuring teams, drawn by the sounds of combat. They stared at the scene: the collapsed wurm, the fallen stalactites, the small bloody figure lying amidst the wreckage.

"That's the Farmer," someone whispered. "The solo idiot."

"He killed the wurm. Alone."

"Impossible. Look at his level—he's barely fifteen. The wurm was almost twenty."

Jaren pushed himself up onto his good elbow. His vision swam, but he forced himself to focus. "The girl," he croaked. "Is she safe?"

A woman stepped forward—the registration officer from the Guild, her iron-gray hair now streaked with dust. "The girl you rescued? She's with the healers. Unharmed, thanks to you." She knelt beside him, her expression unreadable. "You killed four warriors and a mage team, saved a noble's daughter, and soloed a boss three levels above the recommended minimum. In one day. While wounded."

"Sounds about right."

She laughed—a genuine sound, surprised out of her. "You're insane, you know that?"

"I've been told."

Her eyes softened. "Let's get you to a healer."

---

[System Notification]

Reputation Change: Widespread.

Effect: +500 Regional Renown.

New Title: 'The Wurm-Slayer.'

New Status: Adventuring Legend (Emerging).

---

The healers worked on him for three hours.

By the time they finished, his arm was rebuilt, his wounds closed, his mana restored. He slept through most of it, exhaustion finally claiming him. When he woke, he was in a proper bed—soft sheets, clean blankets, the first such bed he'd slept in since arriving in this world.

A girl sat beside him.

She was young—fifteen, maybe—with dark hair and darker eyes and the kind of beauty that came from good breeding and better nutrition. She wore a simple dress now, not the torn and dirty clothes he'd last seen her in.

"You're awake," she said. "I've been watching you for hours. The healers said you'd sleep longer."

Jaren sat up slowly, checking his body. Everything seemed to work. "You're the girl from the dungeon."

"I'm Lady Elara Vex, daughter of Duke Vex of the Northern Marches." She paused. "You saved my life. Those men—they were going to kill me, after they got whatever information they wanted. You killed them instead."

"I killed some of them. I let the mage go."

"I know. He told the Guild everything. About how you spared him, how you could have killed him and didn't." Her eyes searched his face. "Why? He would have killed you without hesitation."

Jaren thought about it. About the mage's young face, his terror, his whispered plea.

"Because I've been where he was. Scared. Alone. Facing death. Someone gave me a chance once. Seemed fair to pass it on."

Elara was silent for a long moment. Then she smiled—a genuine expression that transformed her serious face. "My father will want to meet you. To thank you properly. He's... not good at gratitude, but he tries."

"I don't need thanks."

"Maybe not. But you're getting it anyway." She stood, smoothing her dress. "Rest. Recover. The Guild has frozen your dungeon earnings until they can verify everything, but trust me—when they do, you'll be rich."

She paused at the door. "And Jaren? Thank you. For not letting me die down there."

Then she was gone.

---

[System Notification]

New Relationship: Lady Elara Vex (Grateful Noble).

Status: Allied (Tentative).

Potential: Political Connections, Financial Support, Future Quests.

---

The Guild's verification took three days.

When it was done, Jaren's earnings were released—plus a bonus from Duke Vex himself, delivered by a steward in livery that cost more than Jaren's entire wardrobe. The numbers were staggering:

Total Merit Points: 2,847.

Total Gold: 1,200.

New Equipment: Vex Family Token (Diplomatic Immunity in Northern Marches).

New Status: Registered Hero (Guild-Approved).

He sat in his new room—a proper room now, in a proper inn, paid for with proper coin—and stared at the numbers.

2,847 Merit Points. In three days, he had earned more than in the previous three months.

At this rate...

He shook his head. One good run didn't make a trend. The wurm had been a fluke—a perfect alignment of environment, opportunity, and desperation. He couldn't count on repeating it.

But he could try.

[Status: Jaren (Age 16)]

Level: 15

Merit Points: 2,847

Goal Progress: 2.847%

The door opened without a knock.

Tomas, the kitchen boy from the Dawnstar, stood there with wide eyes. "You're famous! Everyone's talking about it! The Farmer who soloed a wurm and saved a duke's daughter and—" He stopped, taking in the room, the new clothes, the general air of prosperity. "You moved up in the world."

"I got lucky."

"Luck nothing. You're good." Tomas stepped inside, closing the door behind him. "I want to learn. From you. How to survive, how to fight, how to be like you."

Jaren studied him. The same eager face, the same naive curiosity. But something else now—a determination that hadn't been there before.

"It's not easy," Jaren said. "It's not glorious. It's hours of work for seconds of terror, and most of the time you're alone and scared and wishing you'd chosen a different life."

"I don't care."

Jaren was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Tomorrow. Dawn. We start with the basics."

Tomas's face lit up. "Thank you! I won't let you down!"

He ran out, leaving the door open.

Jaren sat alone, watching the city lights through his window.

Somewhere, in another world, a valley waited. A tree shimmered. A people remembered.

He was closer now. Still impossibly far, but closer.

He closed his eyes and slept.

Tomorrow, he would teach someone else to survive.

It was the least he could do.
