Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The God's Game

Death was not what Jarine expected.

He had imagined—if he imagined at all—a gentle fading, a quiet dissolution into the Life-Web he had nurtured for so long. Perhaps a reunion with Mira, with Orin, with all those who had gone before. Perhaps simply rest.

Instead, he opened his eyes to infinity.

He floated in a vastness that contained everything and nothing—stars that were also eyes, darkness that was also light, silence that was also music. And before him, watching him with an expression of infinite amusement, sat a figure that defied description.

It was old. It was young. It was male. It was female. It was everything and nothing, and its smile held the weight of countless worlds.

"Jarine," it said. "Also known as Jaren. Also known as the Verdant Sovereign. Also known as the Architect of the Living World. Also known as—" A pause, a flicker of something like appreciation. "The Farmer Who Wouldn't Die."

"Where am I?"

"The In-Between. The space between lives. The place where souls go to be sorted, judged, and reassigned." The figure leaned forward, its form shifting through a thousand shapes. "I am the God of Reincarnation. And you, Jarine, are interesting."

"I'm dead."

"You're between. There's a difference." The god gestured, and images flickered in the void—the valley, the people, the life Jarine had built. "You did well. Exceptionally well, for a mortal. Three guardians. Seven allied factions. A legacy that will last millennia." Its eyes narrowed. "But you cheated."

"Cheated?"

"The System. The Shop. The advantages of your second life." The god's voice held no accusation—only curiosity. "You were not meant to have those. They were a gift from a lesser deity, a mistake in the cosmic machinery. And yet you used them beautifully."

Jarine was silent for a moment. Then: "Are you going to take them away?"

"Take them? No. Reassign them? Perhaps." The god studied him with those infinite eyes. "I have a proposition for you, Jarine. A game."

"I don't like games."

"You'll like this one. It involves another chance. Another life. Another world." The god's smile widened. "And at the end of it—if you succeed—a door. A door that leads back to your valley. To your people. To everything you built."

Jarine's heart—if he still had one—stuttered. "Back? I could go back?"

"Not immediately. Not easily. But eventually. If you're strong enough. If you're clever enough. If you're lucky enough." The god leaned closer. "The world I'm offering is harder than the last. More dangerous. More chaotic. The System there is... different. More structured. More demanding. But the rewards are greater."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you rest. Peacefully. Eternally. You've earned that." The god's voice softened. "I'm not a cruel deity, Jarine. I don't force choices. But I offer opportunities."

Jarine thought of the valley. Of Sera, leading in his place. Of Marin, the deep-touched dreamer. Of all the children who would carry his memory forward. They didn't need him anymore.

But he needed them.

"I'll do it," he said. "I'll play your game."

The god's smile was radiant. "I know."

Jarine woke to cold.

He lay in a ditch, his small body shivering, his clothes—rags, really—soaked with dew. Above him, a gray sky promised rain. Around him, unfamiliar plants, unfamiliar smells, unfamiliar everything.

He was a child again. Eight years old, if the god's information was accurate. Small. Weak. Alone.

He sat up, his head spinning. The memories of his previous lives were there—clearer than ever, actually—but layered beneath the new reality of this small, shivering body. He remembered the valley. He remembered Sera. He remembered everything.

And he remembered the promise: grow strong enough, and a door would open.

He stood on wobbly legs and looked around. A road stretched in both directions—muddy, rutted, leading nowhere and somewhere simultaneously. In the distance, he heard the creak of wagon wheels.

He walked toward the sound.

---

The wagon was driven by a merchant—a stout woman with kind eyes and a suspicious expression. She looked at the small, bedraggled child standing in the middle of the road and sighed.

"Lost?" she asked.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Parents?"

"Dead, ma'am."

Another sigh, longer this time. "Get in. I'm heading to the capital. Someone there will know what to do with you."

Jarine climbed into the wagon, wrapping himself in a blanket the woman tossed his way. As the wheels began to turn, he accessed his System for the first time.

He studied the display, noting the new elements. Attributes. Levels. Merit Points. This world's System was more... game-like than the last. More structured. More demanding.

But also more rewarding. The god had mentioned that.

The merchant's voice interrupted his thoughts. "What's your name, boy?"

"Jaren."

"Just Jaren?"

"Just Jaren."

She nodded, accepting this. "Well, Just Jaren, I'm Marta. Welcome to the Empire. Try not to die before we reach the capital."

---

[System Notification]

New Companion: Marta (Temporary).

Destination: Imperial Capital, Aetheria.

Estimated Travel Time: 14 days.

Warning: Bandits, monsters, and general chaos along route. Stay alive.

---

The journey was hard.

Marta was kind but practical—she expected Jaren to earn his keep. He helped with the horses, cooked simple meals over the campfire, and learned to spot dangers before they became threats. His past-life instincts served him well, though he had to be careful not to reveal too much.

On the third night, bandits attacked.

Four of them, armed with rusty swords and desperate intentions. Marta fought them off with a surprisingly lethal short sword, but not before one grabbed Jaren and held a blade to his throat.

"Drop the weapon, woman, or the boy dies."

Jaren acted on instinct. He reached for the System Shop—still there, still accessible—and purchased the cheapest item he could find: Flash-Pod Seeds (Tier 0 - 2 Credits) . He crushed them in his palm.

The flash was blinding. The bandit screamed, releasing him. Marta's sword found the man's chest a moment later.

Afterward, she looked at Jaren with new eyes. "What was that?"

"Something my mother taught me. Plants can be useful."

Marta studied him for a long moment, then nodded. "Useful indeed. Keep practicing."

They reached the capital on the fifteenth day.

Aetheria was vast—larger than any city Jarine had seen in either life. Its towers scraped the clouds, its streets teemed with people, its presence was overwhelming. He stared, wide-eyed, as Marta guided him through the chaos.

"There's an orphanage in the noble quarter," she said. "Good reputation. They'll feed you, teach you, prepare you for the Awakening."

"The Awakening?"

"Every child is tested at sixteen. The crystal reveals your class, your path, your future." She glanced at him. "You'll be ready. You're clever. You'll find a way."

She left him at the orphanage gates with a pat on the head and a small pouch of coins. "Be well, Jaren. Make something of yourself."

He watched her wagon disappear into the crowd, then turned to face his new home.

---

[System Notification]

Location: Imperial Orphanage, Aetheria.

Duration: 8 years (until Awakening).

Objective: Survive, Learn, Prepare.

---

The orphanage was not kind.

Children were ranked by potential—those judged likely to awaken powerful classes received better food, better beds, better treatment. Jaren, small and quiet and marked as a future Farmer, was near the bottom.

The mockery began immediately.

"Farmer boy! Going to grow us some vegetables?"

"Can you summon a potato? I'm hungry!"

"Don't get too close—you might catch 'peasant' from him."

Jaren bore it with the patience of someone who had faced far worse. He had been mocked before, in another life, in another world. He knew how the story went.

He studied. He trained. He grew.

Every night, when the other children slept, he accessed his System and planned. He distributed his attribute points carefully—Intelligence and Wisdom primarily, with occasional investments in Vitality. He practiced his Life-Web Sense on the orphanage's small garden, slowly rebuilding the connection he had once taken for granted.

He saved his Merit Points—earned through chores, through studying, through surviving—and dreamed of the skills they could unlock.

---

The Awakening came when he was sixteen.

All the orphanage's eligible children were gathered in the Grand Hall, a massive building where the city's elite sent their own children for testing. Jaren stood in the back, small and unremarkable among the preening nobles and their confident offspring.

One by one, they approached the crystal.

"Mage!"

"Warrior!"

"Rogue!"

"Paladin!"

The nobles cheered. The orphans watched with envy. Jaren waited.

Finally, his name was called. "Jaren, Foundling, Orphanage 7."

He walked to the crystal, ignoring the whispers. Farmer boy. What's he even doing here? Waste of everyone's time.

He placed his hand on the crystal.

The response was immediate—and confusing.

Green light, rich and deep, the color of life itself. But beneath it, a shimmer of silver, of summoning, of something else. The two magics intertwined, as they had so long ago, and the crystal announced:

CLASS: FARMER

The hall erupted in laughter.

But Jaren saw what others didn't—a second notification, visible only to him.

[Hidden Sub-Class: Planar Shepherd - Confirmed.]

[System Shop - Fully Active.]

[New Title: The Returner (Hidden).]

He smiled.

Let them laugh. He knew what was coming.

---

[System Notification]

Awakening Complete.

Class: Farmer (Public).

Hidden Sub-Class: Planar Shepherd.

Reputation: Ridiculed (Current).

Quest Generated: Prove Them Wrong.

---

The Academy entrance exams were held one month later.

Jaren applied, as all awakened did. His scores on the written portions were perfect—his Intelligence and Wisdom, honed over two lifetimes, made the tests trivial. But the practical exam was another matter.

He was assigned to a team of five: three warriors, a mage, and himself. The objective: clear a low-level dungeon of its monster spawns.

The warriors refused to work with him.

"A Farmer? He'll slow us down. He'll get us killed." The team leader, a brash young man named Kael, sneered at Jaren. "Stay in the back. Don't touch anything. Try not to die."

Jaren nodded, saying nothing.

The dungeon was dark, damp, and filled with Glimmer-Rats—small, fast, annoying creatures that swarmed in numbers. The warriors charged in, swords swinging. The mage provided support with bursts of flame.

They did well—for about ten minutes. Then the rats overwhelmed them.

Jaren watched from the back, assessing. The rats had a pattern, a rhythm. They swarmed, retreated, swarmed again. Their leader—a slightly larger specimen with glowing eyes—directed the attacks from the shadows.

He moved.

Not toward the battle—around it. He found the leader rat, isolated, and crushed a Flash-Pod in its face. Blinded, it squealed in panic. Jaren's knife—a cheap thing, purchased with Merit Points—found its throat.

The swarm immediately fell into chaos. Without their leader, they were just animals. The warriors, recovering, cut them down.

When the dungeon was clear, they stared at Jaren with new eyes.

"How did you—"

"I paid attention." He walked past them, already planning his next move. "That's what Farmers do."

---

[System Notification]

Dungeon Clear: Glimmer-Rat Warren (Solo Contribution: Critical).

Experience Gained: +500.

Level Up! Jaren is now Level 7.

Reputation Change: Kael's Team - Hostile → Respectful.

Merit Points Earned: +150.

---

The solo dungeons became his specialty.

No one wanted to team with a Farmer, so Jaren stopped asking. He took the low-level commissions no one else wanted—the ones that paid little and offered less—and cleared them alone. Each victory earned him Merit Points, experience, and the quiet satisfaction of proving the world wrong.

His methods were unorthodox. He used plants as weapons, insects as scouts, the environment itself as a trap. Other adventurers called it cheating. Jaren called it farming.

On a solo run through a Venom-Cave, he encountered his first boss: a massive spider with eyes that glowed in the dark.

It should have killed him. A Level 7 Farmer against a Level 12 boss was suicide.

But Jaren had spent his Merit Points wisely.

[Skill Purchased: Thorn-Root Summoning (Level 1) - 200 MP.]

[Skill Purchased: Life-Web Transfer (Level 1) - 150 MP.]

[Item Purchased: Aetherium Dagger (Tier 1) - 50 MP.]

The spider attacked. Jaren dodged, summoned thorn-roots to entangle its legs, drained its strength through the Life-Web, and struck with the dagger when it was weakened.

It took an hour. He emerged covered in venom, exhausted, but alive.

And holding the spider's core—a rare drop worth a fortune.

---

[System Notification]

Boss Defeated: Venom-Weaver (Solo).

Experience Gained: +1,200.

Level Up! Jaren is now Level 9.

Merit Points Earned: +400.

---

The Academy took notice.

Not officially—they still laughed at his class. But whispers spread. The Farmer who soloed dungeons. The peasant who outperformed nobles. The boy who should have died but didn't.

Jaren ignored them. He had a goal: grow strong enough to open the door.

His status screen reflected his progress:

One night, alone in his small room, Jaren accessed the System Shop and searched for a specific category: Dimensional Access.

The results were sparse—and expensive.

[Dimensional Door Key - Tier 7]

Cost: 100,000 Merit Points.

Effect: Opens a one-way door to a specified dimension (must have coordinates).

[Planar Compass - Tier 5]

Cost: 25,000 Merit Points.

Effect: Allows user to locate dimensional coordinates of previously visited locations.

[Spatial Anchor - Tier 4]

Cost: 10,000 Merit Points.

Effect: Stabilizes dimensional connections, prevents drift.

He had 590 Merit Points.

It would take years. Decades, perhaps. But he had time. He had patience. He had purpose.

Somewhere, in another world, his valley waited. Sera waited. The Sky-Tree waited.

He would find them.

No matter how long it took.

Jaren looked out his window at the city lights, at the Academy spires, at the world that had mocked him and would one day remember him.

"Wait for me," he whispered. "I'm coming home."

The stars, indifferent and eternal, offered no reply.

But somewhere, in a valley that touched the sky, a tree shimmered—and remembered.
