Chapter 26 - The Chase

Ava's POV

Leo had the phone out of her hand before she finished reading.

He looked at the photo. Then at the text. His face did the thing she was learning to brace for the total shutdown, everything going flat and cold and internal, the man behind the glass retreating to somewhere she couldn't follow.

Then he handed the phone back.

"Don't respond," he said.

"I wasn't going to respond. I was going to ask you what we."

"Leo." The driver's voice. Flat and urgent. "We've got company."

She turned around.

One of the black SUVs had come back around. It was on the road behind them, two blocks back, moving fast. Even from this distance, she could see it wasn't cruising. It was closing.

"They doubled back," Price said.

"They split up," Leo said. "One stayed. Watched for movement." He was already leaning forward. "Dominic. North corridor. Avoid the bridge."

"Bridge is fastest," Dominic said.

"A bridge is also where you put two cars to box someone in. Avoid it."
