Chapter 19 - The Cold Warehouse

POV: Ava

The car stopped so hard Ava's seatbelt locked against her chest.

Rourke had both hands on the wheel and his eyes fixed on something ahead through the windshield. Leo was already leaning forward, scanning the same direction.

"Talk," Leo said.

"Black SUV. Parked at the waterfront entrance." Rourke's voice was flat and precise. "Engine off but it's warm. See the condensation on the glass? Been there less than an hour."

Ava looked. The vehicle sat at an angle, half blocking the narrow lane that led down to the waterfront unit. It looked ordinary. That was the frightening part. It looked like any parked car on any street. But Rourke had spotted it in the dark from fifty yards away and stopped the car, and Leo had gone very still beside her, which she now understood was the equivalent of anyone else going rigid with alarm.

"Plates?" Leo said.
