Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Blue Envelopes and the Dust of Old Memories

The glitz of the new city doesn't really dazzle us anymore. We've carved out our own little quiet island in the middle of this rat race. Ever since Barsha's international research paper was published, her confidence has been through the roof. And Arindam? He's basically the backbone of his office now. But despite all the success, we have an unwritten rule: once the clock hits 9:00 PM, the laptops go into exile and the phones stay face down. That time belongs strictly to the four of us.

It was a Thursday. The sky looked moody, like it could pour at any second. Barsha was in her study, sketching out a plan for a new project, when Arindam called out from the living room.

"Barsha, come look—there's a letter in the mailbox. Someone sent it by courier."

Barsha was genuinely surprised. A physical letter in a blue envelope in this digital age? She saw the bright blue sleeve in Arindam's hand. But the moment she saw the sender's name, her heart did a strange little somersault. The name was 'Ananya.'

A Blast from Fifteen Years AgoAnanya was Arindam's friend from college—the kind of friend people used to whisper about. Long before Barsha entered the picture, Ananya was the person closest to him. But somewhere along the way, buried under ego and misunderstandings, that friendship vanished. And now, fifteen years later, that name was standing in front of them again.

The envelope contained a wedding card and a small note. Ananya was marrying a doctor in America. The note read: "Arindam, I know it's been a long time. But for this new beginning, I want my old friends by my side. You both have to come."

Barsha stared at the card. It wasn't jealousy, but a heavy discomfort. Arindam set the card down and looked at her.

"Are we going?" His voice was just a plain question.

Barsha gave a faint smile. "That's up to you. She's your old friend. Do whatever feels right."

Clouds and Sunshine WithinThat night, Barsha couldn't catch a wink of sleep. She knew how much Arindam loved her, but a shadow of the past always lingers. She wondered—is Ananya still as beautiful? Would seeing her pull Arindam back into an old ache?

The next morning, after the kids left for school, Arindam sat next to her.

"Are you overthinking that card, Barsha?"

Barsha hesitated. "No... I mean, I'm just surprised. Why now?"

Arindam took her hand. "Listen, Barsha. Life has many chapters. Ananya was my past, but you are my present and my future. If I want to go there, it's only to show how happy I am now. This home we've built—that's the biggest success of my life."

The gloom in Barsha's mind cleared. Arindam's blunt honesty was the real strength of their relationship.

That Wedding Night and Unspoken WordsThe wedding was back in our old city. The kids were ecstatic to see their grandparents. Barsha styled herself differently this time. She didn't buy an expensive boutique saree; she pulled out that old Jamdani Arindam had gifted her on their first anniversary.

Arindam laughed. "That saree still fits you?"

Barsha checked herself in the mirror. "The body's measurements might change, Arindam, but do the measurements of memories ever change?"

When we walked into the venue, every eye was on us—the 'successful couple' from the big city. Seeing Arindam, Ananya walked up with a smile. "Arindam! I didn't think you'd show. And Barsha... you're even more radiant in person."

A Splash of Rain and a Final UnderstandingHalfway through, the sky opened up. Arindam and Barsha stood in a corner of the balcony. Ananya walked over. "Can I have five minutes?" she asked, looking at Arindam.

Barsha stepped away but her heart stayed there. Ananya said in a low voice, "Arindam, I made a mistake back then. My ego ruined everything. Seeing your bond with Barsha... it makes me happy. I wanted to apologize."

Arindam said calmly, "There's nothing to apologize for. Whatever happened made us more mature. I just want you to be happy."

A New Realization on the Way BackThe next day, as we boarded the train, Barsha rested her head on Arindam's shoulder. "Arindam, can I tell you something? I felt pity for Ananya yesterday. She's having an expensive wedding, but I don't know if she'll have these tiny, crazy moments of joy that we share."

Arindam kissed her forehead. "Success isn't just a bank balance, Barsha. It's coming back to someone you can be yourself with. Ananya was a chapter, but you... you've written the whole novel."

Barsha smiled. The train wheels hummed. The new city was calling. They knew now that no shadow from the past could put out the light of their present.
