Chapter 85 - Mama

Salvatore's POV

Mama.

Valentina had seen it. She said nothing.

"Mama."

"Salvatore." Her voice came through the speaker with the specific quality it had when she was holding herself together by effort rather than ease, controlled, precise, every word placed carefully.

Giovanna Esposito had buried a husband and raised three children inside a world that did not apologize for what it was, and she had never once let any of them see her fracture completely.

"Where are you."

"Driving."

"Driving." A pause. "It is two in the morning, Salvatore."

"I know."
