Chapter 9 - The Last Day

The last day finally came.

Maya felt the weight of it pressing against her chest as she stepped into the chamber, the air heavy with silence. The torches burned low, their flames bending as though they too mourned the inevitable farewell. Shadows stretched across the walls, ancient and solemn, watching her every move.

Kael was already there, waiting. He stood near the carvings, his figure half-claimed by darkness, half-lit by the trembling glow of fire. The bracelet she had given him glimmered faintly against his wrist, a fragile reminder of the bond they had forged in stolen days.

Maya's voice broke the silence, soft and trembling. "Kael… it's my last day here."

He turned slowly, his eyes carrying centuries of sorrow. "I know. The sands have counted each hour, and I have felt every one slip away."

She walked closer, her steps echoing against the stone floor. "I wish time would stop. Just for us."

Kael's gaze drifted to the wall of hieroglyphs, his hand brushing over the carved symbols. "Time does not stop, Maya. But before it carries you away, let me share what these walls mean. They are not just marks of stone—they are voices of the past."

Maya stepped closer, her eyes tracing the hieroglyphs. "Tell me."

Kael's fingers lingered on a carving of a lotus flower. "This flower… it means rebirth. Renewal. It was carved here to remind the soul that even in death, there is awakening."

He moved his hand to a falcon etched in flight. "And this falcon—Horus. Protector of the sky. It speaks of journeys, of watching over those who leave."

"So the walls are speaking to us now," Maya murmured. "About me leaving… about you staying."

Kael's smile was faint, sorrow weighing in his gaze. "Yes. They remind me that though you depart, your spirit may still soar. But for me… I remain bound. My chains are not iron, Maya, but centuries of silence."

She reached out, touching the same falcon symbol. "And yet, you've broken that silence. You've spoken to me. You've lived again, even if only for these days."

"Three days of life," Kael said, his voice fragile. "After centuries of shadow. And now, the gods ask me to surrender it once more."

Maya's throat tightened. "I don't want to leave you. I don't want this to be goodbye."

"Loneliness is my oldest companion," Kael whispered. "But you… you gave me laughter, warmth, the taste of adobo, the glow of your world. You gave me life. And now, I must learn to let it go."

Tears welled in Maya's eyes. "And I must learn to leave you behind. But Kael… I don't want to forget."

He stepped closer, his hand hovering near hers. "Then let us seal this moment. Let us bind memory to love."

Their lips met in a trembling kiss. The chamber seemed to shiver, the torches flaring brighter. As their lips touched, Maya's mind flooded with visions—memories not her own, yet deeply hers.

She saw herself as Nefertari, adorned in shimmering linen garments, her hair braided with gold beads, her brow crowned with a delicate diadem. The gardens of Thebes stretched around her, lush and fragrant, the Nile's breeze carrying the scent of lotus blossoms. Beside her walked Kael, his hand warm against hers, his eyes filled with devotion that seemed to pierce through centuries.

She remembered the laughter they shared beneath the canopy of stars, the way his voice softened when he whispered promises of forever. The Nile glistened under the moonlight, its waters reflecting their joy, their love, their secret vows. She remembered the music of the courtyards, the rustle of silken robes, the quiet moments stolen between duty and desire.

But then came the shadows—the pain of separation, the cruel hand of fate. She remembered the grief of death, the cold silence of the tomb, the centuries of waiting. She felt the weight of loneliness pressing against her chest, the endless nights Kael endured without her, his prayers echoing unanswered through stone.

And yet, within the flood of memory, there was also light. She remembered Kael's unwavering devotion, his refusal to let her fade into dust. She remembered the way his soul clung to hers, bound not by chains but by love that defied time itself.

Maya trembled as the visions consumed her, each fragment of memory stitching itself into her heart. She was Nefertari. She was Maya. And Kael had always been hers—across lifetimes, across centuries, across the sands of Egypt.

Maya gasped softly against his lips, pulling back with tears streaming down her face. "Kael… I remember. I remember everything. I was Nefertari. You were mine. You are mine."

Kael's body began to glow, light radiating from his skin like dawn breaking through stone. His chains of time cracked, shimmering dust rising around him. Yet his voice remained calm, tender.

"Maya… you have freed me. Recognition is the key. Love remembered is love eternal. I am no longer bound to this pyramid."

She clutched his glowing hand desperately. "No! If you're free, then stay with me. Don't vanish. Please, Kael."

His smile was serene, though his form flickered like a fading flame. "I cannot stay. Freedom means release. But do not grieve, beloved. You have given me more than centuries of silence ever could. You have remembered me. You have named me your love. That is enough."

Maya sobbed, shaking her head. "It's not enough for me. I want you here. I want you alive."

Kael's light grew brighter, his figure dissolving into radiance. "Maya… I am happy. Truly happy. For the first time, I am not a prisoner. I am yours, even beyond the sands of Egypt. Carry me in your heart, and I will never fade."

His voice lingered as his body vanished, leaving only the echo of his glow.

"I love you, Nefertari. I love you, Maya. Until we meet again."

And then he was gone.

The chamber fell silent, the light fading into shadow. Maya reached out into the emptiness where Kael had stood, her tears falling freely. Though his form was gone, his words remained, etched into her heart like the hieroglyphs upon the walls—an eternal promise carried across time.

Maya collapsed to the floor, her sobs echoing through the chamber. "Kael! Kael!" Her cries filled the silence, but no answer came. The tomb was still, lifeless once more.

As her grief consumed her, a gentle hand touched her shoulder. Maya turned to see Zara, her friend, standing in the doorway.

"Maya… I heard your cries," Zara said softly. "Come. You cannot stay here alone."

"He's gone, Zara," Maya choked out. "He's gone because I remembered. Because I loved him. And now I've lost him again."

Zara knelt beside her, pulling her into an embrace. "You did not lose him. You set him free. That is love's greatest gift. Do not see it as a loss, but as a release."

Maya clung to her, sobbing. "But I'm alone again. I don't want to be alone."

"You are not alone," Zara whispered. "I am here. Lisa is here. And Kael… he is within you now. His love is yours forever."

The Next Day

The sun rose over Cairo, golden light spilling across the city. Maya stood at the airport with Lisa and Zara, her eyes red from crying. Her flight back to the Philippines awaited, but her heart remained in the pyramid.

Before leaving, she had gone once more to Kael's tomb, hoping against hope that he would return. But the chamber was silent, the torches extinguished, the bracelet lying cold upon the stone: no glow, no voice, no Kael.

"I came back," she whispered to the empty tomb. "But you're gone. I'll carry you, Kael. I'll carry you always."

Now, at the airport, Lisa held her hand firmly. "Maya, it's time. You can't stay here forever. You need to come home."

Maya's tears brimmed again. "Home feels empty without him."

Zara stepped forward, her voice steady. "Home is where you carry him. And you will not carry him alone. We are your friends. We will walk with you."

Maya looked at them both, her heart aching yet grateful. "Promise me… promise me we'll stay connected. That I won't lose you too."

Zara smiled warmly. "I promise. We will not lose contact. We are friends now, and always."

Lisa squeezed her hand. "We'll be with you, Maya. Even across oceans."

The announcement for boarding echoed through the terminal. Maya took a deep breath, her chest heavy with sorrow yet filled with fragile hope. She hugged Zara tightly, then Lisa.

"Thank you… for being here. For helping me when I couldn't stand."

Zara whispered, "And thank you for reminding us what love means. Go, Maya. Carry Kael with you. Carry Nefertari with you. And carry yourself forward."

Maya nodded, tears streaming as she walked toward the gate. Lisa was beside her, steady and protective, her hand resting lightly on Maya's shoulder as if to remind her she wasn't alone.

She turned one last time, seeing Zara waving from behind the barrier, her face full of compassion. Maya lifted her hand in return, her heart aching with gratitude and sorrow.

Lisa leaned close, whispering, "We'll get through this together. I'll be with you all the way home."

Maya swallowed hard, her voice breaking. "Thank you, Lisa… I don't think I could face this flight without you."

Zara's voice carried faintly across the distance, warm and resolute. "Until we meet again, Maya. Don't forget—you're not alone. We'll remain friends, always."

With that promise echoing in her heart, Maya turned back toward the gate, Lisa walking at her side. Together, they stepped forward, leaving Egypt behind but carrying Kael's memory with them into the skies.
