Chapter 46 - The Report

Day 50 in the secret realm

The Mission Hall buzzed with its usual morning chaos.

Students crowded the counters, submitting reports, collecting rewards, arguing about mission grades. Nova stood in line with Leo and Hazel, his expression calm, his mismatched eyes drawing glances from everyone who passed.

The line moved forward.

The mission coordinator was a tired-looking woman in her forties, her cultivation flickering at 3rd Order, 2nd Rank. She scanned their mission crystal with practiced efficiency, then frowned.

"Group C-47. Moonpetal Bloom retrieval." She looked up. "You're three hours past your expected return."

"We encountered complications," Leo said quickly. "More beasts than anticipated. Higher rank than mission brief indicated."

The coordinator's frown deepened. "Define 'more beasts.'"

Leo glanced at Nova. Nova said nothing.

"At least thirty swamp hounds," Hazel spoke up. "Plus bog serpents. The swarm was organized—coordinated. That shouldn't happen with wild beasts."

The coordinator made a note on her crystal. "Casualties?"

"Injuries." Leo held up his bandaged arm. "Nothing fatal."

"And the herb?"

Nova placed the Moonpetal Bloom on the counter—perfectly preserved, its silver-gold petals glowing faintly.

The coordinator's eyes widened. "Pristine condition. That's—" She caught herself. "The bonus applies. Full reward."

She tapped her crystal.

MISSION COMPLETE: C-47

BASE REWARD: 200 merit points (each)

BONUS: 50 merit points (each) — Pristine specimen

TOTAL: 250 merit points added to each member

Hazel let out a breath. "Finally. Some good news."

"The beast situation," the coordinator continued. "You're certain about the organization?"

"I'm certain." Nova spoke for the first time. His voice was calm, measured, utterly confident. "They were herded. Directed. Something in that swamp is controlling them."

The coordinator studied him—noting his uniform, his cultivation, those strange mismatched eyes.

"Your rank," she said slowly. "You were 2nd Order, 2nd Rank when you left. You're 7th Rank now."

"Yes."

"That's... unusual."

"I found something in the swamp. A herb—cultivation accelerant. I consumed it to survive."

The coordinator's eyes narrowed. "You have proof of this herb?"

"It's gone. I ate it."

Nova met her gaze without flinching. "I survived a swarm that should have killed me. I returned with the mission objective. I'm standing here, alive, while countless students who followed the rules are dead. If you want to question my methods, feel free. But I suggest you focus on why a C-rank mission nearly killed three academy students."

Silence.

The coordinator stared at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, she nodded.

"Point taken." She made another note. "I'll file a report about the beast activity. The guild will investigate." She handed them each a small pouch. "Your merit points have been credited. Dismissed."

He walked away.

Class C Dormitory — 11:47 AM

Leo and Hazel followed him to his door.

"We need to talk," Leo said.

Nova turned, leaning against the doorframe. "Talk."

"The cave." Leo's voice was low. "You didn't mention it in the report. The entrance we saw from the high ground—you went in there, didn't you?"

Nova said nothing.

"That's where you found the herb. That's where you advanced." Hazel's eyes gleamed. "There could be more in there. More herbs, more treasures—"

"There's nothing."

"You don't know that. You barely explored—"

"I know." Nova's voice hardened. "There's nothing in that cave worth dying for. Take my advice: forget you ever saw it."

Leo and Hazel exchanged glances.

"We're not asking for a share," Leo said carefully. "We just want to know—"

"You want to know if there's more power to be had." Nova's mismatched eyes fixed on them—one gold, one purple, both utterly cold. "There isn't. I took everything of value. The rest is death waiting to happen."

He opened his door.

"We're done here."

The door closed in their faces.

Leo stared at the wood for a long moment. Then he turned to Hazel.

"He's lying."

"Of course he's lying." Hazel's voice was soft. "But we can't prove it. And even if we could—" She shook her head. "Did you see his eyes? Something happened to him in that cave. Something that changed him."

"Changed him how?"

"I don't know. But I'm not stupid enough to find out."

They walked away.

Behind the door, Nova listened to their footsteps fade.

Fools, he thought. Greedy fools.

They would talk. He knew they would talk. It was only a matter of time before someone came asking questions.

But that was a problem for later.

Right now, he had work to do.

Nova's Room — 12:30 PM

He sat on his cultivation mat, cycling the Voidfrost Sutra through his meridians. The Heaven-grade technique was everything Nora's journal had promised—efficient, powerful, perfectly suited to his dual affinities.

His cultivation had stabilized at 2nd Order, 7th Rank.

In my past life, he thought, it took me forty years to reach 6th Order. This time—

This time would be different. He had knowledge. He had the Godless System. He had the All-Seeing Eye.

And soon, he would have the remaining fragments.

GODLESS SYSTEM NOTIFICATION

FRAGMENT DETECTION

Second Fragment Location: Unknown

Signal Strength: Undetectable within current range

Note: First fragment acquisition has awakened the others. They will reveal themselves in time.

In time, Nova thought. Always in time.

He dismissed the notification and returned to cultivation.

Hours passed in comfortable routine.

Cultivation. Technique practice. Alchemy study. The rhythm was familiar—the same discipline he'd maintained in his past life, the same dedication that had made him the Crimson Prince.

Class C Dormitory — 5:47 PM

A knock at his door.

Nova didn't move. "Enter."

Priscilla stepped inside, her expression troubled. "Leo and Hazel are talking. In the dining hall. About you."

"Let them talk."

"They're saying you found something in that cave. Something valuable. Something you're hiding."

Nova shrugged. "They're not wrong."

Priscilla stared at him. "You're not even going to deny it?"

"Why would I? It's true."

She crossed to him, searching his face. "Nova—what happened out there? You're different. The way you talk, the way you move, the way you look at people—"

"I found myself." He reached up, touching her cheek. "The real me. The one I'd forgotten."

"And who is that?"

He smiled—not the cold expression, but something warmer. Something just for her.

"Someone who loves you. Someone who will protect you. Someone who will never, ever let anyone hurt you again."

Priscilla's eyes glistened. "Promise?"

"Promise."

She kissed him then—fierce and desperate and full of everything she couldn't say.

When they broke apart, she was crying.

"I don't understand what's happening," she whispered. "But I trust you. Okay? I trust you."

Nova held her close.

"That's all I ask."

Dining Hall — 6:23 PM

Leo and Hazel sat at a corner table, their voices low.

"He's hiding something big," Leo muttered. "Five ranks in one night? That's not natural."

Hazel nodded slowly. "The instructors should know. If he found something dangerous—"

"Or valuable."

"Either way." She leaned forward. "We report it. Let them investigate. If there's nothing there, no harm done. If there is—" She shrugged. "We get credit for reporting."

Leo considered this. "Who do we tell?"

"The class coordinator. Instructor Voss. He'll know what to do."

"Tonight?"

"Tomorrow. Let's think it through first." Hazel glanced around the crowded hall. "No rush. He's not going anywhere."

They didn't notice the figure watching from across the room.

They didn't notice the mismatched eyes.

Nova's Room — 7:47 PM

Through the All-Seeing Eye, Nova watched them plot.

His remote viewing ability let him see anything within three kilometers—including the dining hall, including that corner table, including every gesture, every whisper, every calculating glance.

They're going to report me, he realized. I can't have that, can I?

He could stop them. A quick teleport, a blade across the throat, two problems solved forever.

No, he decided. Let them talk. Even if they were to investigate, they'll find nothing.

Because Nova had been careful. The cave entrance was hidden. The drake's body would decompose quickly in the swamp's humidity. The only evidence was in his inventory, safely stored where no one could find it.

Let them come.

He dismissed the viewing ability and returned to his alchemy.

Nova's Room — 10:23 PM

Three more pills sat on his desk—Recovery Pills, all Standard quality, all perfectly formed. His success rate with the All-Seeing Eye was approaching 100%.

Tomorrow, he thought, I'll try a new formula. Something more advanced.

The Moonlace seedling glowed softly on the windowsill.

Priscilla slept in his bed, her breathing slow and peaceful.

Nova sat at his desk, watching her, and felt something he hadn't felt in two lifetimes.

Contentment.

It wouldn't last. It never did. But for now, in this moment, it was enough.

He turned back to his work.

Outside, the artificial sky shifted through its nightly colors.
