Chapter 9 - Chapter 13- The Second Trial

SECOND TRIAL — FOXFIRE CONTROL

The courtyard grew quiet.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.

Lady Mizuri raised her hand, and the elders stepped back in unison. A circular foxfire seal spread across the stone floor, glowing faintly as spirit runes awakened one by one.

"The Second Trial begins," Mizuri announced.

"Foxfire Control."

Jack took a slow step forward, standing at the center of the seal. Yukito moved to the side with the other observers, his playful energy replaced by sharp focus.

Mizuri's eyes locked onto Jack.

"Three Phases," she said. "Do not rush. Do not resist. Respond."

🔹 PHASE ONE — MANIFESTATION

"Summon Foxfire."

The command was simple.

Jack lifted his hand.

Nothing happened.

A faint crease formed between his brows.

He inhaled slowly, grounding himself. He could feel the magic—there, responsive—but it resisted coming out cleanly, like a flame testing its holder.

He adjusted his stance.

Exhaled.

A spark appeared—flickered—then nearly vanished.

Yukito tensed.

"…Come on, Jack."

Jack steadied his breathing again, tightening his focus—not forcing, not pulling.

This time, the foxfire responded.

A small flame bloomed above his palm, steady and contained, its glow soft but alive.

Mizuri watched closely.

"Manifestation Achieved," she said. "Proceed."

🔹 PHASE TWO — SHAPE & SUSTAIN

"Form it," Mizuri commanded.

"Hold it."

The foxfire wavered as Jack began shaping it. The flame resisted, stretching unevenly, reacting to his shifting focus.

He clenched his jaw.

Too much.

He eased back—less intent, less pressure.

The flame tightened.

Slowly, carefully, Jack shaped it into a compact orb, no larger than his palm. Sweat beaded faintly at his temple as seconds stretched longer than they should have.

The ground seal pulsed—testing duration.

The orb flickered once.

Jack corrected instantly, adjusting his breath.

The flame stabilized.

Yukito's eyes widened.

"He's holding it…"

Mizuri gave a short nod.

"Sustain complete."

🔹 PHASE THREE — INTERFERENCE

The air shifted.

A low pressure rolled across the courtyard. Spirit runes flared brighter. A sharp sound echoed suddenly—too close, too loud.

The foxfire shuddered.

Jack's fingers twitched.

The flame threatened to surge.

His heart rate spiked—but he caught it.

The pressure increased.

Another pulse—stronger.

Jack's breathing faltered for a split second, and the foxfire flared—just barely.

Mizuri's eyes narrowed.

Jack immediately reacted—not by pushing back—but by reducing output.

The orb shrank.

Smaller.

Dimmer.

Still alive.

The interference continued.

Jack held.

Seconds passed.

Then—silence.

The pressure lifted. The seal beneath his feet dimmed.

The foxfire remained—unchanged.

Mizuri lowered her hand.

"…Enough."

Jack let the flame fade naturally and staggered half a step before steadying himself. He exhaled deeply, shoulders relaxing at last.

The courtyard remained silent.

Then Elder Renkai spoke.

"The Second Trial is Completed."

Yukito finally breathed out, a grin breaking through his tension.

"He really worked for that…"

Mizuri turned her gaze to Jack once more—measured, thoughtful.

"You struggled," she said.

"And you adapted."

Her voice softened—just a little.

"That is the mark of someone who will survive what comes next."

Jack straightened, eyes forward.

Jack lowered his hand slowly, keeping his breathing uneven on purpose.

"…Good. That should be enough."

His eyes remained calm, but his thoughts moved with precision.

"If I make it look easy, they'll sense it."

He glanced briefly at the fading foxfire seal beneath his feet.

"Better they think I struggled… than see what's actually there."

His fingers curled slightly, feeling the energy settle calmly inside him.

Jack straightened, his expression returning to neutral.

Outwardly, just another trial candidate.

Inwardly—everything remains controlled.

The courtyard slowly came back to life.

Soft murmurs spread among the elders, the foxfire seals dimming into nothingness. Jack lowered his hand slowly, keeping his breathing uneven on purpose.

"…Good. That should be enough."

Yukito hurried to his side, eyes bright.

"You did it, Jack!" he said in a low but excited voice. "That wasn't easy at all. You held on till the end!"

Jack let out a slow sigh, rolling his wrist once as if easing the strain.

"Yeah…" he replied, offering a faint smile. "It took more focus than I expected."

Yukito grinned wider, clapping him lightly on the shoulder.

"Still, for your first foxfire trial? That was amazing. The elders were watching you the whole time!" yukito said.

Jack nodded slightly, keeping his gaze forward, calm and modest as his thoughts moved with precision. "Better they think I struggled… than see what's actually there." said to himself.

His fingers curled slightly, feeling the energy settle calmly inside him.

Jack straightened, his expression returning to neutral.

His eyes flicked briefly toward the elders—measured, unreadable—before settling back into quiet composure.

Outwardly, he was just another candidate who had pushed himself to the edge.

Inwardly, everything remained perfect under control.

The courtyard fell silent. Even the morning breeze seemed to pause, holding its breath.

Lady Mizuri stepped forward, incense smoke curling around her as her sharp gaze swept over the gathered participants.

"Jack," she began, her voice calm but authoritative, "the third trial is a one-on-one duel. It will test not only your skill with sword and magic, but your ability to balance mind, body, and control under pressure."

Jack's eyes narrowed slightly, absorbing every word. He stood straight, shoulders squared, fingers brushing lightly over the handle of his black sword.

"This is not about defeating your opponent with brute force," Mizuri continued, her gaze unwavering. "It is about making precise decisions, controlling your strength, and proving that you can adapt when challenged."

From the side of the shrine's torii gates, a figure emerged: the shrine guardian. Clad in traditional combat robes adorned with foxfire talismans, he moved with fluid precision, holding a short sword that seemed to hum with restrained energy. His foxfire eyes flickered faintly, signaling readiness.

Jack's expression remained calm, but a faint glimmer of focus passed across his eyes as he assessed the guardian.

Mizuri's voice cut through the tension like a blade.

"You will face the guardian here, in the central courtyard. Any attempt to exceed your limits or reveal forbidden power will be noted. The duel is not to kill, but to prove balance and control."

Jack's hand tightened slightly around his black sword, the faintest shadow of intent in his stance.

He nodded once, respectfully.

"I understand."

Yukito, standing to the side, watched with a mix of excitement and tension, his ears twitching.

Even the elders leaned forward slightly, their eyes sharp as the guardian bowed to Jack, signaling the start of the duel.

Mizuri stepped back, incense smoke drifting around her.

"Begin when ready. Show discipline, strategy, and control."
