Chapter 6 - chapter 6, failed attempts at control

Maya tried to reclaim some sense of power. A small online campaign, something clever, viral — something that would prove she wasn't irrelevant.

She spent hours crafting the perfect post, the perfect angle, the perfect wording. When it went live, the response was… nothing. Silence. Or worse, polite indifference.

Her chest tightened. Her brilliance had failed again. She wanted to curse the world, her sister, the algorithms, anyone. But deep down, she knew: skill alone wasn't enough. Without humility, without heart, it was meaningless.

She stared at the screen, defeated, and for the first time, wondered if she could face the truth without spinning a story to protect her ego.

Elena called that evening. Calm. Firm. "We need to talk," she said.

Maya stiffened. She had prepared defenses, excuses, rehearsed anger. But hearing Elena's voice, steady and clear, something in her shrank.

"You've been hiding from your mistakes," Elena said gently. "From yourself. I can see it. And it's hurting you — and everyone around you."

Maya's mouth opened, closed, opened again. Words failed her. She wanted to argue, to justify, to pivot. But Elena didn't move, didn't flinch. She simply waited, patient and unwavering.

Finally, Maya whispered, "I… I didn't know how to stop."

Elena's reply was quiet but cutting. "Then it's time to start."

The conversation left Maya shaken. Not humiliated. Not triumphant. Just raw, exposed, and uncomfortably alive.
