Chapter 37 - Shadows on the move

The temple hospital was quiet, but it wasn't peaceful. A heavy silence lingered in the air, the kind that followed loss. Soft lantern light flickered along the wooden corridors, and the scent of herbs drifted faintly through the halls. Nao, Aoi, and Riku walked side by side, their footsteps slow, their expressions weighed down by everything that had happened.

None of them spoke.

They didn't need to.

The emergency chamber door slid open with a soft sound. Inside, Hana lay resting on a futon, her breathing steady but fragile. Beside her sat Kaito, his body wrapped in thick bandages. His face was pale, but his eyes were open—tired, yet alive.

Nao stepped forward, stopping a few steps away. "…You're still here," he said quietly.

Kaito gave a faint, dry smile. "Barely."

Aoi moved to Hana's side and knelt, gently placing her hand near hers. Relief flickered across her face, softening the tension in her eyes. For a brief moment, the room felt calm again.

"The healers have done what they can."

The voice came from behind them.

They turned to see Genzo standing at the doorway, his presence steady and commanding. He stepped inside slowly, his gaze moving from Hana to Kaito, then to the others.

"The rest depends on their will," he added.

Riku leaned slightly against the wall, arms crossed. "And the enemy?" he asked.

Genzo didn't hesitate. "They are already moving."

The calm shattered.

A quiet tension filled the room as his words settled in.

"There is only one key left," Genzo continued.

Nao's eyes lifted immediately.

"The final key."

Aoi's expression tightened. "Where is it?"

Genzo paused briefly, then answered, "In the Ninja Village."

That name alone shifted the atmosphere.

Nao clenched his fists, determination replacing the heaviness in his chest. "Then we protect it."

Genzo gave a small nod.

"Yes."

Footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Another presence entered the room—calm, sharp, controlled.

Ryuu.

His gaze swept across everyone before settling on Genzo. "So it's true," he said. "The last key still exists."

"For now," Genzo replied.

Ryuu looked toward Nao, Aoi, and Riku, studying them silently. "This won't be like the last battle," he said.

Genzo turned slightly toward him. "You will go with them."

Ryuu nodded once. "Understood."

Nao stepped forward. "When do we leave?"

Genzo's answer came instantly.

"Now."

Aoi stood up, her eyes steady. "We won't let them take it."

Riku smirked faintly. "Let them come."

Genzo looked at the three of them, then at Ryuu. His voice lowered slightly, carrying a quiet weight.

"The fate of everything now rests on that key."

"Do not fail."

Far away, deep within a mountain hidden from the world, a dark cave pulsed with unnatural energy. The air was thick and suffocating, as if the space itself was alive.

At the center stood Noritsuki, holding a glowing key in his hands. Its cursed energy flickered like a heartbeat, unstable and dangerous.

In front of him stood a small figure.

Akuma.

Despite his childlike form, his presence filled the entire cave. His golden eyes gleamed as he stared at the key.

Noritsuki lowered his head slightly. "As promised."

Akuma reached out and took the key.

The moment his fingers touched it—

The cave trembled.

A dark pulse spread outward, crawling along the walls like a living shadow. Akuma's lips curved into a slow, unsettling smile.

"So this is one of them…" he murmured.

Noritsuki hesitated before speaking again. "Where is Enma?"

Akuma didn't look at him.

"Enma is in meditation," he said calmly. "He is taking full control of that body."

A brief silence followed.

The meaning was clear.

Something far more dangerous was coming.

Akuma slowly turned, his gaze drifting into the deeper shadows of the cave. "We are close," he said softly. "But not complete."

Noritsuki tightened his grip slightly. "One remains."

Akuma nodded.

"The final key."

His eyes gleamed faintly.

"Bring it to me."

From the darkness, a figure stepped forward.

Kasugami.

His body flickered like mist, barely holding a solid form. His presence was silent, yet suffocating.

Behind him, six more figures emerged.

Demons.

Each one radiating dangerous energy.

Akuma looked at them all, his expression cold.

"You know what to do."

Kasugami bowed slightly. "The Ninja Village."

Akuma's smile widened just enough to feel wrong.

"Take the final key."

A pause.

Then—

"Kill anyone who stands in your way."

The air grew heavier.

Without another word, Kasugami dissolved into mist, vanishing into the darkness. One by one, the others followed, disappearing silently until the cave returned to stillness.

Akuma stood alone, holding the key.

Waiting.

Watching.

Back at the temple, the sky had begun to darken. The wind moved softly through the trees, carrying a quiet chill.

Nao, Aoi, Riku, and Ryuu stood at the entrance.

For a moment, none of them moved.

Then Nao stepped forward, his expression firm.

"This time…"

He clenched his fist.

"We don't lose it."

Aoi nodded. "No matter what."

Riku glanced toward the distant horizon. "Guess it's time to see what this Ninja Village is really like."

Ryuu moved ahead of them, his voice calm but sharp.

"Stay focused. The enemy is already on the move."

Without another word, they began their journey, their figures disappearing into the fading light.

Far away—

Unseen.

A thin mist drifted silently across the land.

Moving in the same direction.

Toward the Ninja Village.
