Chapter 154 - Rejected

The private dining room of the high-end western restaurant was quiet, lit by soft overhead lights and a single low candle that had been placed more for formality than atmosphere. Vanya Aether sat across from the Governor of the West Alliance. He was a man with a solid build, broad shoulders, and the kind of posture that came from both training and years of political work. His level sat comfortably above average, enough to command respect among hunters, and his influence across the western territories was well known.

They had already ordered. The food arrived in careful courses. Conversation stayed practical from the start.

"The eastern front reports are better than last month," the governor said as he cut into his meat. "Your guild's progress in the middle plains has stabilized several supply routes. The council is pleased."

"Progress is progress," Vanya answered. She took a slow sip of water. "It still isn't enough. The central zones remain unstable. We lose people every week."

"I am aware. That is why the alliance continues to fund the raids. Your leadership with Alexander has been… effective."

She gave a short nod and nothing more. The silence that followed was not comfortable, but neither of them forced it to be. They ate. He asked about the flux-shield towers. She answered with numbers and timelines. He mentioned trade agreements with the northern territories. She listened and offered a brief opinion when asked.

When the main plates were cleared, he leaned back slightly.

"I will speak directly. I requested this meeting for more than political discussion."

Vanya looked at him without expression.

He reached into his inner pocket and placed a small box on the table between them. When he opened it, a ring sat inside, simple and well-made.

"I am asking you to marry me. The alliance would benefit from the connection, and I believe we would work well together. You would have security, influence, and a partner who understands the weight you carry."

Vanya's fingers rose a short distance toward the box. They hovered there for a moment, then stopped. She withdrew her hand and rested it back on the table.

"I cannot accept."

He remained still. "May I know the reason?"

"It is not because of you. You have done nothing wrong. You are capable, and you have been respectful. But I no longer have the ability to feel that kind of attachment. The part of me that could want someone in that way died with two people. Akshat and Manya. There is nothing left to give."

She met his eyes steadily. "Please do not contact me again for this purpose. I will continue working with the alliance on official matters, but nothing beyond that."

The governor was quiet for several seconds. Then he closed the box and returned it to his pocket. He stood, walked around the table, and took her hand with careful formality. He pressed a brief kiss to the back of it.

"I understand. The decision is yours. If that ever changes, my card is here."

He placed a plain card on the table, nodded once, and left the room without further words.

Vanya remained seated. She looked at the place on her hand where his lips had touched, then raised her eyes to the ceiling. After a long moment she picked up the card, turned it once between her fingers, and dropped it into the small waste bin beside the table.

Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes, but none fell. Her face stayed calm. The emptiness inside her did not shift. She simply sat there, breathing evenly, until a server came to clear the last of the dishes.

Outside, the western city continued its evening routine. Inside the quiet dining room, Vanya Aether felt nothing at all.
