Chapter 2 - 2: The woman who ruled without a crown

The Woman Who Ruled Without a Crown

The gates of the inner palace closed behind Shen Lianhua with a sound like a tomb sealing.

She was given coarse gray robes and a wooden tag stamped with a number instead of a name. Her hair was tied without ribbon, her hands already raw from hauling water before the sun had fully risen. The palace did not welcome newcomers—it broke them first.

On the third day, all new servants were ordered to kneel in the Hall of Ancestral Virtue.

Incense burned thick, curling around the towering pillars. No one dared to breathe too loudly. Eunuchs moved in silence, their footsteps measured, rehearsed.

"Lower your heads," someone hissed.

Lianhua bent forward, forehead touching the cold marble floor.

A soft laugh drifted from behind the silk screens.

"Are these the new ones?" a woman's voice asked, smooth and unhurried.

"Yes, Your Majesty," a eunuch replied.

Not Empress.

Not Queen.

Empress Dowager.

"Lift the third girl's head."

Hands forced Lianhua's chin upward.

Behind layers of embroidered silk sat Empress Dowager Xu. Her hair was threaded with silver, her posture relaxed, her eyes sharp as polished glass. She studied Lianhua without warmth, without curiosity—only judgment.

"This one doesn't shake," the Dowager observed.

Lianhua lowered her gaze at once, heart pounding.

"Fear," the Dowager continued, "is something that must be taught."

She smiled faintly.

"Send her to the laundry court. Let the steam soften her bones."

The order was given as lightly as a breath.

As Lianhua was dragged away, she understood something no one had told her.

The emperor sat on the throne.

But this woman ruled the palace.
