Morning arrived with a quiet nervousness.
Areeba woke up earlier than usual. She carefully packed her school bag, placed her notebooks inside, arranged her lunch box and filled her water bottle. Every small action felt important today. It was not just another morning — it was the beginning of another new chapter.
As she stepped out of the house, a thousand thoughts surrounded her mind.
How should I behave?
What if someone asks about me?
What should I say… and what should I not?
Lost in these thoughts, she walked toward her new school. The road took around twenty minutes, but to Areeba it felt like a blink of an eye. Before she could even prepare herself fully, she found herself standing in front of the school gate.
She stopped.
For a moment, confusion and nervousness wrapped around her heart. Students were walking in confidently, chatting with friends, laughing freely. And there she stood — silent and new.
Taking a deep breath, she whispered to herself,
"I can do it."
With that quiet assurance, she stepped inside the school with confidence.
Since it was her first day, she didn't know where her classroom was. Looking around, she noticed a peon passing by and politely asked,
"Excuse me, where is Classroom A Section 1?"
The peon looked at her kindly.
"Come, I will take you there."
"I'll be grateful," Areeba replied softly.
As they walked through the corridor, the peon asked,
"I haven't seen you before. You're new here, right?"
"Yes," Areeba answered formally. "It's my first day."
Soon they stopped in front of a classroom.
"This is A Section 1," the peon said.
Areeba thanked him sincerely and slowly pushed open the classroom door.
The moment she entered, all eyes turned toward her.
For a second, the sudden attention made her heartbeat faster. But she didn't let it show. With calm confidence, she stepped inside, greeted everyone softly, and walked toward an empty desk. Sitting alone, she kept her posture straight, as if nothing around her mattered.
She could hear faint whispers.
Students were talking about her.
But she didn't react.
A few minutes later, the teacher entered. The entire class greeted respectfully, and Areeba followed. The teacher asked her to introduce herself. Standing up politely, she gave a brief introduction and then sat down quietly as the class began.
Everyone soon got busy with studies.
During the lecture, the teacher told her to collect previous notes from classmates. After the class ended, Areeba politely approached a girl and asked if she could share her notes. The girl agreed kindly. Soon, a few students gathered around, asking simple questions about her — where she came from, why she joined this school.
Areeba answered briefly and politely.
She told them it was more convenient for her to study here and that her house was close to the school. She also mentioned that her elder sister Mili lived here, so shifting made sense.
She shared only what was necessary.
Soon, there was a combined class for both sections — A Section 1 and Section 2. Without overthinking, Areeba followed her classmates to the new classroom. But as she entered, she noticed every seat was already occupied.
There was no space for her.
She stood quietly near the door. The teacher noticed and asked her to sit.
"Sir, there is no space," she replied politely.
Before the teacher could say anything, a boy from the class stood up and offered his seat.
"You can sit here. I'll manage with a chair," he said.
Areeba hesitated for a moment but then thanked him softly and sat down. Sitting beside a boy made her slightly uncomfortable. She stayed silent the entire time, focusing only on the lesson.
At the end of the class, the teacher called her to the front.
"Introduce yourself to everyone," he said.
Areeba walked to the front, took a deep breath, and spoke calmly,
"Hello everyone. My name is Areeba. Pleased to meet you all."
She stopped there.
"Is that all?" the teacher asked gently.
"Yes sir," she replied politely, then returned to her seat.
Now everyone knew her name.
But she still didn't know anyone.
After a short break, another combined class awaited. She remained standing quietly, not wanting to sit beside the boy again unless necessary. During the break, he stepped away for a while. Areeba took a deep breath, drank some water, and opened her book to prepare for the next class.
When the break ended, he returned and sat again. Soon the teacher began attendance, calling names one by one. Since Areeba didn't know her roll number yet, she listened carefully. When attendance ended, she politely spoke up,
"Sir… my attendance?"
The teacher looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"Sir, I'm new. Today is my first day. My name is Areeba."
He nodded and marked her attendance. The class continued smoothly.
After the combined classes ended, she returned to her original classroom for the remaining periods. Hours passed quietly. She observed everything but spoke very little. By the time the final bell rang, students rushed out happily, saying, "Chhutti ho gayi!"
Areeba packed her bag slowly and walked out.
Her first day was over.
It wasn't extraordinary.
No deep conversations.
No instant friendships.
But it was a beginning.
As she walked back home, she realized something softly —
she had faced another new world…
and this time, she had done it without fear.
