The air in the Konoha Forward Training Grounds was thick with the scent of ozone and scorched earth. Renza and Renju had been granted a rare ten-day "Respite" to recover from the Well mission, but for them, rest was just a different form of training.
Jonin Kaji and Special Jonin Sora stood before them. Kaji's single eye was fixed on Renza's blackened trench knives, while Sora watched the way Renju's chest moved in a steady, rhythmic cycle.
"You're relying too much on your lungs," Kaji growled, his voice like gravel. "Breathing gives you the 'Peak,' but it leaves you in a 'Valley' when you're done. If you don't have Jutsu to fill the gaps, you're just a dead man waiting for a cooldown."
"Today," Sora added, drawing a scroll, "we expand your arsenal. Three tools for three problems: Distance, Defense, and Synergy."
Renza stood in a clearing, his white hair damp with sweat. Kaji walked behind him, kicking Renza's heels to widen his stance.
"You're all 'In-your-face,' Renza. If a Suna puppeteer keeps you at thirty yards, you're a target. You need a way to reach out and touch someone without lunging."
1. Long Range: Wind Release - Vacuum Blade (Shinkuken) Kaji taught Renza to exhale chakra onto his stolen knives, but instead of holding the wind around the steel, he learned to flick it. By swinging the heavy Stone knives in a specific "snap" motion, Renza learned to launch crescent-shaped blades of compressed air.
Purpose: To suppress long-range attackers and force them into close quarters where his Breathing excels.

1. Short/Mid Range: Water Release - Wild Water Wave (Suiryudan: Mizu-no-Nami) Renju learned to expel a high-pressure stream of water from his mouth. Unlike the massive dragon jutsu, this was a concentrated "jet" designed to knock enemies off balance or blind them.
Purpose: To create distance or provide a "slippery" environment that benefits his Water Breathing forms.
2. Defense: Water Release - Water Basin (Suuhachi) Sora taught him to create a floating pool of water that acted as a non-Newtonian fluid. When struck slowly, it was soft; when struck with a high-speed projectile or sword, it became as hard as steel.
Purpose: A reactive defense that absorbs the kinetic energy of "heavy" hitters like the Hidden Stone ninjas.
3. Sword Support: Water Infusion - Hidden Ripple This was the most subtle. Renju learned to coat his chokutō in a thin, vibrating layer of water. It didn't make the blade sharper—it made it silent. The vibration cancelled out the "whistle" of the sword cutting the air.
Purpose: Perfect synergy with his Abyss style. It made his strikes impossible to hear, turning him into a true silent assassin.

On the final night of their training, the four of them sat around a map of the Land of Rain. The "Salamander's" shadow loomed over every ink mark.
"We have the tools," Renza said, his voice deeper, more gravelly than it was a year ago. He ran a whetstone over his trench knives. "What's the play, Sensei?"
"The play is survival," Kaji said grimly. "The village is moving us into the 'Heart' of the Rain. We're being assigned to a long-term guerrilla unit. No more wells. No more camps. We're going into the deep forest to hunt Hanzo's elite scouts."
Renju looked at his chokutō, now shimmering with a faint, watery light. "Hanzo's scouts use poison. My Water Basin can filter some of it, but we need to move faster than the mist."
"Then we move together," Renza said, looking at Renju. "The Gale clears the mist, and the Abyss swallows the remains."
Sora looked at the two eleven-year-olds. They weren't children anymore. They were Specialized Chunin, "Calamities" in the making.
"We leave at dawn," Sora announced. "From here on out, there are no reinforcements. There is only the squad. And there is only the Breath."
