Chapter 2 - A familiar yet strange voice

Boom!!!

Roar!!!

Phainon, holding the little girl in one arm, quickly moved through the area.

He had also grabbed a baseball bat from a convenience store along the way, and with a single swing, he smashed all the incoming Dead Soldiers into the ground; in terms of strength, those irrational Dead Soldiers simply couldn't withstand Phainon's power.

Perhaps only the skyscraper-like monsters in the city could compare to Phainon.

Phainon quickly hid in an alley, cautiously observing a group of monsters on the street, including some three-meter-long flying creatures; although Phainon didn't recognize these monsters, it didn't prevent him from being wary of them.

At this moment, the ground suddenly trembled, causing Phainon to retract his head that was peeking out to check the situation; instead, he held the girl in his arms tightly and gently comforted her.

"It's okay, it'll be over soon, close your eyes, don't be afraid."

Phainon's voice was very soft, like the first gentle breeze of spring, but even so, it didn't dispel the fear in the little girl's heart; her body still trembled slightly, and she could only cover her mouth with both hands, trying her best not to make a sound.

However, the little girl's heavy breathing told Phainon one thing: she was terrified to the extreme.

Phainon could only hold the little girl in his arms, wanting her to feel some sense of security in this way.

Just then, the colossal creature also passed by, its two massive forelimbs crushing all the buildings in its path.

The enormous sound made the little girl's body tremble violently, but fortunately, Phainon held her tightly, preventing her from making a sound.

Feeling the colossal creature pass by him, Phainon could clearly hear the little girl's heartbeat in his arms, a heartbeat filled with terror.

Perhaps the goddess of luck was on their side; the colossal creature merely destroyed a building next to them before slowly moving away.

The tremors grew weaker, indicating that the colossal creature had left; Phainon poked his head out to check the surroundings, and only after confirming that the dozens-meter giant beast was gone did he slowly release the little girl from his arms.

It was then that he noticed the little girl in his arms was already tear-streaked, perhaps from fright or some other reason.

Phainon sighed; if he were alone, he might not fear the giant beast, but with this little girl by his side, the noise from fighting the beast would surely attract more monsters.

Phainon couldn't guarantee that he truly had the ability to protect the little girl while being surrounded by a horde of monsters.

Phainon slowly crouched down, meeting the little girl's gaze; his blue pupils showed some tenderness as he wiped away the tears from her cheeks and said softly,

"Don't be afraid, I'll take you home."

Perhaps startled by the sudden situation, the little girl didn't respond, only continued to sob; clearly, everything before her was too cruel for a girl of only six or seven years old.

But Phainon couldn't dwell on that any longer; he had to find the army of this world. With such a massive event unfolding and so many lives lost, he didn't believe the higher-ups of this world would remain indifferent.

As if in response to Phainon's thoughts, two missiles with red tail flames suddenly struck the distant giant beast, creating a massive explosion that enveloped the entire creature in smoke.

This also shocked Phainon; while weapons of such destructive power were not as potent as a Titan's strike, the fact that ordinary people could wield such force indicated that the technology of this world was indeed extraordinary.

However, to his surprise, the giant beast suffered no damage from the explosion.

Furthermore, it was enraged by the attack, roaring towards the sky, raising its enormous forelimbs high, and smashing them violently onto the ground.

In an instant, all buildings within a thousand-meter radius centered on it collapsed, and even the ground showed signs of caving in; the fighter jets in the sky momentarily became unstable due to this attack, but they quickly regained control and circled the giant beast, launching missiles.

Phainon, watching all of this from a distance, couldn't help but marvel at the giant beast's power and the advanced technology of this world.

However, all of this was temporarily irrelevant to Phainon; his most important task now was to hand the little girl over to the army of this world and, in doing so, learn more about this world.

Phainon took one last look at the two sides battling in the distance, then once again picked up the little girl with one arm and ran towards the outskirts of the battlefield.

During this time, however, Phainon felt that the dark clouds in the sky seemed to be growing thicker, he wondered if it was due to this disaster or some other reason.

Finally, perseverance paid off; Phainon found a squad of soldiers clearly armed with weapons. Judging by their appearance, although he didn't recognize their specific weapons, he was certain they were the army of this world.

Phainon didn't hesitate and walked over. One of the soldiers saw Phainon, clearly paused for a moment, then hurriedly spoke into the small black box on his chest.

"Captain, we've spotted a civilian and a little girl here. Should we take them with us?"

Before Phainon could wonder why the man was speaking to the small black box, the device also emitted a voice.

"Remember our mission: we are here to rescue Dr. Mei. We don't need to concern ourselves with other matters."

The soldier's face clearly showed a difficult expression upon hearing the captain's words; he wanted to persuade him further but ultimately said nothing, only agreeing with a sense of powerlessness.

"Yes, Captain."

Phainon naturally heard their conversation; although there were still some things he didn't understand, one thing he knew was that they seemed unwilling to take him and the little girl in his arms.

The soldier then spoke.

"Leave here, find a place to hide quickly. The nearest army will arrive in 15 minutes; by then, someone will naturally rescue you."

Phainon pondered for a moment, then tentatively asked,

"Let this little girl go with you. I don't need protection; at least let her survive."

The soldier was clearly moved; taking a little girl wouldn't have much impact on them, but if he violated orders and took the little girl on his own, he would certainly be punished.

However, after thinking about his initial reason for joining the team, he didn't hesitate and nodded.

"Alright, hand her over to us."

Seeing the other party relent, Phainon secretly breathed a sigh of relief; after all, taking care of a little girl by himself while dealing with these monsters would definitely be inconvenient.

But this squad was different; with a dozen people working together, they were certainly more suitable to care for the little girl than he was.

After handing the little girl over, Phainon was about to leave when he heard a familiar yet unfamiliar voice.

"You guys are really slow, aren't you? If you're any slower, I might just take Mei away again ♪"
