Chapter 2 - Weirder Still

Sunday morning came on time. Jennifer knew because she had been up until sunrise editing her next chapter. This one excited her—finally, the young grandson was confronting his conglomerate king grandfather face to face.

"Give me the subsidiary and watch me make it bigger than its holding company!" she typed dramatically.

She had meant to make Grandpa a ruthless, gangster-type magnate, but somehow he ended up elegant, composed, and eccentric… just like her landlady.

Well, whatever. She was pleased with Conglomerate King Grandpa. Layers under that gentle smile—that's the best kind of dangerous authority for drama, she decided.

After her late-night editing session, Jennifer washed up and went to bed. She didn't wake again until 2 p.m.—still tired, but starving.

She wasn't the kind of beautiful single lady who could whip up something fancy in a fully stocked, organized kitchen. None of that existed in her life. So she went downstairs across the street and grabbed a coffee and two hot dogs.

It wasn't like anyone was around to judge her.

Back upstairs in her apartment, she noticed a cardboard priority envelope from DHL at her door. Weird. She hadn't been gone more than ten minutes. Plus, it was Sunday afternoon—did DHL work that fast? And shouldn't the delivery person require a signature?

Even weirder: the envelope was addressed to her, full name and all. Including her middle name—the one she almost never used.

Jennifer Margaret Lee.

She wolfed down the first hot dog, chased it with coffee, and tugged the tab to open the envelope. The second hot dog went straight into her mouth as she gulped down more coffee.

Inside: a transfer of deed and a sales agreement dated twenty years back—when Jennifer had first signed her lease.

Wait… what? So she hadn't been paying rent? She'd been paying for the building in deposit?

Mind. Blown.

This was going to take Jennifer a while to recover from.
