Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 Hunger Beneath the Spiral

The deeper they went—

The less the dungeon felt like stone.

The walls began to breathe.

Not literally.

But close enough that Elias couldn't shake the feeling.

The smooth cavern they entered after leaving the shattered chamber pulsed faintly, like something alive was buried just beneath its surface. The red glow from before had deepened into something darker—thicker—almost like liquid light flowing through veins in the rock.

Subterranean Awareness: 100%

For the first time—

It stopped increasing.

Elias felt it settle.

Lock in.

And with it came a realization that made his chest tighten.

"This is as deep as my awareness can reach from here…"

Lilith glanced over at him, walking backward ahead of them with an amused smile, completely at ease.

"Not quite."

Nyx narrowed her eyes.

"What do you mean not quite?"

Lilith twirled a strand of her dark hair around her finger lazily.

"It means you've reached the edge of your current perception."

She tapped her temple.

"Not the dungeon's depth."

Elias frowned.

"So there's more below this."

Lilith's smile widened.

"Oh, much more."

Nyx muttered under her breath.

"Great."

The path sloped downward again.

But this time—

There were no clear walls.

No defined edges.

The space opened into a massive cavern where the ground itself looked soft.

Not dirt.

Not stone.

Something in between.

Like flesh hardened into terrain.

Nyx crouched slightly, tapping the surface with the flat of her blade.

It gave.

Just barely.

"I hate this place," she said immediately.

Lilith laughed.

"You're going to say that a lot."

Elias stepped forward cautiously.

Each step sank just a fraction before stabilizing.

The air here was warmer.

Humid.

Thick.

And filled with a low, constant sound.

A heartbeat.

Not his.

Not Nyx's.

Something bigger.

Much bigger.

Area Discovered

The Living Basin

Classification: Organic Dungeon Zone

Threat Level: High

Nyx looked around slowly.

"…We're standing on something, aren't we?"

Lilith didn't even try to hide her grin.

"Oh absolutely."

Nyx closed her eyes briefly.

"Of course we are."

Elias exhaled slowly.

"Define 'something.'"

Lilith spread her arms.

"This entire basin is part of a larger organism embedded in the spiral."

Nyx stared at her.

"You're telling me we're walking on a living creature."

"Yes."

"…I'm going to kill you if you start enjoying this too much."

"I already am."

Elias ignored them and focused.

Subterranean Awareness pulsed again—

Then something new appeared.

Passive Skill Unlocked

Deep Resonance (Lv. 1)

Allows limited perception of living dungeon structures and their emotional states.

Current Sensitivity: Low

Elias froze slightly.

"…It's aware."

Nyx looked at him.

"What is?"

"The ground."

Lilith's eyes lit up.

"Oh."

She leaned closer, clearly interested now.

"You can feel it already?"

Elias nodded slowly.

"It's… hungry."

The word hung in the air.

Nyx tightened her grip on her sword.

"Define hungry."

Before Elias could answer—

The ground shifted.

A ripple moved across the basin like a wave passing through flesh.

Then—

Something burst upward.

A mass of tendrils erupted from the surface, snapping toward them with violent speed.

"CONTACT!" Nyx shouted.

She moved instantly.

Her blade flashed, slicing through the first tendril cleanly.

It recoiled with a wet, shrieking sound.

Elias stepped forward and grabbed another mid-strike.

It writhed violently in his grip.

Devour activated.

Devour Result

Stat Gain: +5 Random Stat

The tendril collapsed into dust in his hand.

Nyx cut down two more.

But the ground wasn't stopping.

More tendrils erupted.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

The basin had awakened.

Lilith, meanwhile—

Was watching.

Not helping.

Just watching.

With clear amusement.

Nyx snapped at her.

"A little help would be nice!"

Lilith tilted her head.

"You're doing fine."

Another tendril shot toward Elias's back.

Nyx intercepted it instantly.

"FOCUS!"

Elias nodded and slammed his fist into the ground.

The impact sent a shockwave outward, disrupting several tendrils at once.

But it didn't stop them.

The heartbeat grew louder.

Faster.

Hungrier.

Then—

The basin opened.

The ground split apart beneath them, revealing a massive cavity below.

And from it—

A creature began to rise.

Enemy Detected

Core Parasite — Basin Spawn

Threat Level: High

Behavior: Consumption / Assimilation

It wasn't humanoid.

It barely had a shape.

A writhing mass of flesh, tendrils, and jagged bone-like protrusions that pulsed in rhythm with the cavern itself.

At its center—

A single glowing core.

Nyx grimaced.

"…I hate everything about this."

Lilith finally moved.

But not to attack.

She stepped casually beside Elias.

"You'll want to aim for the core."

Nyx glared at her.

"No kidding!"

The creature lunged.

Tendrils lashed outward like whips.

Nyx dodged, cutting through them with precise strikes.

Elias charged straight forward.

The ground tried to swallow his feet.

He forced through it.

Devour surged again.

But this time—

It didn't trigger.

The creature's tendrils wrapped around his arm.

Tight.

Pulling.

Trying to drag him into the mass.

Nyx shouted.

"Elias!"

Lilith's voice cut in, calm and sharp.

"Don't fight it."

Both of them looked at her.

"What?" Nyx snapped.

Lilith's eyes were focused now.

Serious.

"For once."

"Trust me."

Elias hesitated.

The tendrils tightened.

Pulling him closer to the core.

His instincts screamed to resist.

But—

He stopped.

And let it pull him in.

Nyx's eyes widened.

"ELIAS!"

Lilith grabbed her arm.

"Wait."

"He's about to get eaten!"

"No."

Lilith's gaze didn't waver.

"He's about to do something much more interesting."

The creature dragged Elias into its mass.

Flesh closed around him.

Darkness.

Pressure.

Heat.

And then—

Devour exploded.

Not a pulse.

A surge.

A violent, overwhelming force ripping through everything around him.

Skill Steal Activated

The core shattered.

The entire creature convulsed.

Outside—

Nyx felt it immediately.

The tendrils froze.

Then began collapsing rapidly.

The basin stilled.

And from the center—

Elias tore his way out.

Covered in dark ichor.

Breathing hard.

Alive.

New Skill Acquired

Nyx rushed to him immediately.

"You idiot!"

She grabbed his shoulders.

"Don't ever do that again!"

Elias laughed weakly.

"It worked."

"That doesn't make it a good idea!"

Lilith walked over slowly.

Smiling.

"That…"

She looked genuinely impressed.

"…was worth watching."

Nyx glared at her.

"You knew that would happen."

Lilith shrugged.

"I suspected."

Elias wiped the ichor from his face.

"You could have warned me."

"And ruin the moment?"

She grinned.

"Never."

Nyx groaned.

"I'm going to kill her."

Lilith leaned closer to Elias again, her voice dropping playfully.

"You're adapting faster than I expected."

Her eyes gleamed.

"And your hunger is growing."

Elias met her gaze.

"I'm not losing control."

Lilith smiled softly.

"We'll see."

Nyx stepped between them again.

"Alright that's enough of that."

Lilith raised her hands innocently.

"Jealous?"

Nyx's eye twitched.

Elias sighed.

"This is my life now."

And somewhere deep below—

The spiral shifted.

Something had taken notice.

Not just of Elias.

But of all three of them.
