Chapter 271 - The Duty of Fear

Fear had no shape.Only presence.

Elizabeth felt it before she saw it.

The air grew heavy. There was no fire.No shadows. No sound.

Only an ancient pressure…as if the world itself were holding its breath.

"Father…" she whispered.

Astaroth appeared—unfinished. His form was unstable, layered with fragments of human fear folded over one another.Ancient eyes, far too aware. The Demon King.

As powerful as a god…and as limited as one.

"Elizabeth," his voice said. "You've been away for too long."

She did not step back.

"I'm alive," she replied. "That alone is new."

Fear pulsed around her.It did not belong to the present. It was old.Forged from forgotten wars, desperate prayers, and screams no one remembered.

"You are not fulfilling your function," Astaroth said.

Elizabeth clenched her fists.

"It was never my function."

Silence. When he spoke again, his voice was lower. More tired.

"The pact still stands. I exist because humans fear. The gods rule because humans believe. And I…" he continued, "am the axis that binds those two things together."

"I was the sacrifice," she said.

Astaroth did not deny it.

"You were the Demon Queen. The figure meant to exist just enough to be hated… and to die at the right moment."

Elizabeth felt a cold deeper than fear.

"Murdered by heroes. Turned into an example. Turned into faith."

"It has always been so," Astaroth said. "It was meant to be."

She stepped forward.

"Until Lusian broke the chain."

The name fell like a fracture.Fear wavered—unstable.

Astaroth closed his eyes.

"That human was never meant to interfere."

"He did," Elizabeth said. "And I'm still here."

The Demon King watched her for a long moment.

"Return, Elizabeth. Fulfill your duty.If you don't… the gods will find another way to create faith. Crueler. More chaotic."

Elizabeth lifted her chin.

"Then let them try."

"Do you choose him?" Astaroth asked.

"I choose not to be a tool."

The fear around them contracted, like a wound.

"You don't understand what you're rejecting."

"I understand it better than ever," she said. "I lived for centuries knowing when I was meant to die. Now I want to decide when to live."

For the first time, the fear did not grow.It weakened.

Astaroth took a step back, as if the world itself were beginning to reject him.

"If you continue down this path… you will cease to be my heir."

"Then…" Elizabeth held his gaze. "I will be myself."

The Demon King faded slowly. His final words came like a weary echo:

"Be careful, daughter.A world without gods… needs new monsters."

The air began to move again. The world breathed once more.

Elizabeth stood alone.

But for the first time…

she did not feel small.
