Chapter 210 - The Hunt of Shadows

The eastern reaches of Eldoria lay in absolute silence.

No birds, no wind, no insects dared disturb the tense stillness. Between blackened trunks and twisted roots, the hunters advanced—twenty men and women with fear clenched tight in their stomachs. They did not seek glory or honor. They marched because it was their duty.

Albert led the column, his gaze cold and precise, forged through years of war and blood.

"Irregular shield formation," he ordered, his voice cutting down any attempt at protest. "No one breaks off. No one acts alone. If you see it… do not attack. Contain only."

At his right, Emily Carter held a sphere of light against her chest—bright, pulsing like a burning heart. It was not comfort. It was a living weapon, capable of burning through shadow itself and revealing what human eyes could not perceive.

Lusian Douglas moved beside her, his sword still sheathed, his cloak brushing the ground like a dark omen foretelling tragedy. His voice came low—a sharpened warning.

"If you stray more than three steps, I won't be able to cover you."

"I don't need you to cover me." Emily did not take her eyes off the forest. "I need to purify it."

"Purifying it would be suicide."

She did not answer. Neither of them had time to argue with death.

Ahead, Dayana stopped abruptly. The blood marking her palms dripped onto the ground, and the droplets spread eastward like living veins, pulsing with a rhythm no human heart could claim.

"It's close," she whispered. "Very close."

Kara did not wait. The Hero of Strength stepped forward, rolling her neck; muscles tensed beneath her armor, teeth clenched with impatience. For her, fear was an invitation. Danger, a challenge.

Albert raised a hand, cutting her momentum.

"You don't destroy it," he commanded firmly. "You immobilize it. Emily's light will make it physical."

Kara smiled—a brief, almost cruel curve.

"Then I'll make it physical several times."

The ground trembled.

At first, it was only a whisper.A faint vibration, as if the forest exhaled after holding its breath for centuries.

Then… silence.

A silence so absolute that even the hunters' hearts seemed to stop.

A dry crack echoed in the distance.

Another.

And another.

The dead trees began to tilt, as if something moved among them without touching the ground. It did not walk… it glided. The mist thickened, clinging to the skin like cold sweat.

Emily held her breath.

"It's here…"

The sphere of light against her chest pulsed once—like a living heart.

Without lifting his gaze, Lusian murmured:

"Don't move."

Albert raised his shield; the others mirrored him instantly, forming an uneven wall. Held breaths. Trembling hands gripping spears and crackling glyphs.

Dayana closed her eyes; a thin line of blood slipped down her cheek.

"It's not coming from a single direction…" she whispered, horror creeping into her voice. "It's surrounding us."

A low, rasping, inhuman laugh slithered between the trunks.

Kara stepped forward.

"I heard it. Can I break its skull now?"

Albert clenched his teeth.

"Not until—"

The forest exploded.

A shadow lunged from the left, fast as a whip. Its form was a blur of fury and mana, tearing through two trees as if they were straw.

"SHIELDS!" Albert roared.

The hunters slammed their shields together in unison. The impact was brutal—metal buckled, boots sank into the soil, and two of them dropped to their knees, coughing blood.

Emily thrust her hand forward, trembling. Her skin glowed with an unseen fire burning beneath her arm, and drops of blood began to slide from her fingers. Every heartbeat sent pure electricity racing through her veins.

"Cover me!" she shouted, her voice breaking under the strain.

Lusian moved quickly, placing his hands on her shoulders, stabilizing the energy that threatened to tear her apart from within. Kara stepped forward at her side, shield raised, watching the edges of the clearing, ready to block any strike. Dayana opened her palms, letting drops of her violet blood merge with Emily's mana—a lifeline sustaining the spell.

The air grew dense and heavy, vibrating with a pain that burned through Emily's muscles and soul alike. Each pulse of energy arched her back, drew strained cries from her lips, and threatened to consume her entirely if she lost focus.

A silent wave expanded across the clearing.

It did not seek to wound flesh, but to break the corruption devouring the felines. The shadows around them fractured like wet glass. But with every passing second, Emily bled more, her breathing faltered, and her knees threatened to give way.

"Hold on a little longer!" Lusian shouted, adjusting the flow of power as his dark aura rippled around her, shielding her from the magical backlash.

The corrupted felines began to stagger, their eyes flickering with a newly awakened awareness.

And then—they felt fear.

They did not flee. They roared and attacked, desperate to reclaim what they believed was being taken from them.

Emily collapsed to her knees, gasping, her body trembling from the pain tearing through her. Yet her eyes remained fixed on the clearing. Kara and Lusian caught her, holding her upright, while Dayana sustained the fragile balance of blood and mana, ensuring the mage did not collapse completely.

"Now…" Emily whispered, her voice frayed. "Hold them… I—I'll keep them in line…"

Every second was a trial.Every breath could be the last.

And still, the light born from Emily illuminated the forest—making the intangible tangible, revealing the monster and its servants even as it consumed her life force.

When the wave finally stabilized, Emily lay exhausted—pale, her skin marked with burns, her body stained with blood.

But she had done the impossible.

The corruption had been broken. The shadows revealed. And the felines awakened to consciousness—now a far more aware, and far more dangerous, threat.

"I… can't do that again," Emily murmured, her voice barely a thread.

Lusian and Kara helped her to her feet, while Dayana wiped the blood away and steadied what remained of her mana.

The clearing was illuminated.Danger pulsed within every shadow…

And the battle had only just begun.
