Chapter 184 - The Empire’s Fractured Heart

In the Imperial Capital

Dawn fell over the walls warped by mana.

Elizabeth and Lusian advanced along the road leading toward the capital, a journey neither of them would have imagined taking years ago… much less together.

But necessity offered no alternatives.

And survival, even less.

The city rose before them like an impossible blend of beauty and danger: partially floating towers sustained by currents of mana, streets crossed by iridescent filaments suspended in the air, and buildings that seemed to twist slowly, as if breathing.

Every flash.

Every magical vibration.

Every visible anomaly in those streets.

Everything reminded them of the same truth:

The mana cloud did not distinguish kingdoms, alliances, or bloodlines.

It only left chaos in its wake.

In the distance, the imperial palace stood untouched, like a silent reminder of the power the empress still retained.

But once they entered, Elizabeth and Lusian understood that not everything remained under the crown's control.

The Heralds of the gods occupied halls and corridors, moving with a silent authority no one dared question. Their eyes constantly observed and evaluated, while the imperial staff stepped aside with restrained respect.

Obedience toward Naira still existed.

But it was no longer absolute.

Every important decision had to pass through the Heralds first.

The throne room had been prepared with almost surgical precision.

Naira occupied the center, immaculate, seated upon a throne that seemed to absorb the light distorted by the Mana Cloud. Her dress—sober, elegant, perfectly calculated—concealed any personal intention, but her firm posture revealed a woman accustomed to exercising absolute control… even now.

Elizabeth understood the dynamic instantly.

There, every word was watched.

Every gesture carried meaning.

And every conversation had become a silent negotiation.

The Heralds did not sit.

They remained standing, forming a semicircle around the chamber, mana rippling around them like a constant reminder of their divine nature.

Their mere presence drew a boundary.

A warning.

Naira greeted them with the formal inclination that the situation now forced her to offer. One of the Heralds responded with a faint nod and exchanged an almost imperceptible glance with the others.

It was enough.

Nothing there was truly under the empress's control.

—Princess Elizabeth. Duke Lusian Douglas, —Naira said in a measured voice, placing every syllable exactly where it belonged—. The city has suffered more than we imagined. Reconstruction, security… stability. Those must be our priorities.

A barely visible motion of her hand allowed the Heralds to approach.

One of them stepped forward and placed his palm upon the meeting table. Mana responded immediately, illuminating maps and defensive diagrams with a soft bluish glow.

The tension became palpable.

Every decision had to be shared.

Supervised.

Approved.

The empress no longer ruled alone.

Elizabeth noticed that Lusian remained rigid, alert.

He knew that chamber was not safe territory.

The Heralds watched him with a cold mixture of curiosity and suspicion. To them, Lusian was an anomaly. An error within their divine calculations. An Epsilon who should never have existed outside their plans.

Then Elizabeth took the first step toward the throne.

She wore neither jewels nor crown.

She did not need them.

The natural dignity of her bearing imposed more authority than any royal symbol could.

Lusian stepped forward behind her, silent and attentive. His hand rested near the hilt of his sword as he studied every corner of the chamber as though expecting an attack at any moment.

If he spoke now, the Empire would understand too much.

But if he remained silent… perhaps the risk would be even greater.

Naira Ferrussi rose to her feet.

The smile she offered was thin and perfectly calculated. Her eyes, sharp as political scalpels, reflected courtesy… and something more.

—Princess Elizabeth, —she greeted in a clear, carefully modulated voice—. Your arrival at the heart of the Empire is a gesture we deeply value. Your journey could not have been simple, considering the current state of our lands.

Elizabeth inclined her head with exact courtesy, conceding nothing beyond what was necessary.

—Your Majesty. On behalf of the Kingdom, we come to offer everything within our reach: trained troops, supplies, and strategic support. Our goal is to contribute to the Empire's recovery.

Naira did not move.

She did not blink.

But she observed absolutely everything.

Elizabeth's posture.

The tension in Lusian.

And the nearly invisible reactions of the Heralds.

The scene alone revealed the fracture within the Empire.

An empress who no longer ruled alone.

Heralds imposing decisions.

Displaced nobles.

And a guest whose mere presence disrupted divine plans and human ambitions alike.

—What magnanimity, Princess, —Naira said softly—. Bringing foreign military force into our lands is no small decision. The Empire… has suffered more than any other kingdom.

Elizabeth answered with a calm and steady voice.

—We can organize secure caravans, establish temporary shelters, and send trained personnel to stabilize mana in critical zones. All under Your Majesty's authority, of course.

A faint murmur spread through the chamber.

The Heralds barely moved, but it was enough to tighten the atmosphere.

One of them—a blue robe, an unchanging face—slightly inclined his head.

—Faith guides the survival of this Empire, —he said calmly—. We cannot allow military force to eclipse the will of the gods. Every action must be blessed… or the disaster will only worsen.

Naira listened without altering her expression.

She only observed.

The Heralds, standing upright like ancient living statues, cast a shadow over the throne that had not existed before.

And behind Elizabeth… stood Lusian Douglas.

The Kingdom's most dangerous piece.

And perhaps the one the Empire needed most desperately.

Naira inclined her head ever so slightly.

Lusian held her gaze for one second too long.

She allowed herself to respond for only an instant before looking away. She could not allow anyone to notice how much she needed him.

Half of her legions now served the temples.

The other half remained isolated in regions incapable of defending themselves alone.

The Empire's military power was slowly collapsing.

—I appreciate your prudence, Princess, —Naira continued, returning her attention to Elizabeth—. Here, every step must be measured carefully. And every strategy will be discussed alongside the Heralds. With your help… perhaps we may reduce the losses.

The Heralds exchanged tense glances.

Then another of them, dressed in immaculate white robes, spoke gravely:

—The mana phenomenon does not distinguish intentions.

He paused briefly.

—And there are anomalies that require… special attention.

As the meeting continued, Elizabeth understood they had entered an Empire where the rules had changed.

The empress's word was no longer absolute.

And survival depended on carefully navigating politics, magic… and the will of those who could decide destinies with a simple gesture.

Elizabeth maintained her composure.

—We are not here to impose anything, —she said calmly—. Only to offer help where we are permitted to do so.

Naira raised one hand.

An elegant gesture.

Precise.

The tension in the chamber eased immediately.

—What we seek is coordination, not imposition. Faith guides us, Princess…

Her eyes briefly shifted toward Lusian.

—But strength sustains the Empire. I will not allow it to collapse again because of a lack of understanding.

The smile that curved her lips was barely visible.

And her thoughts remained hidden from everyone.

Lusian… so close and still beyond my reach.

If not for this chaos… I would have already claimed what I need.

One of the Heralds then stepped forward.

—I propose a joint force: imperial troops, troops from the Kingdom… and two of our Heroes, to ensure divine will guides our actions. Every decision will be made together. No command will stand above the others.

Naira opened her mouth to respond, but Elizabeth spoke first.

—No one questions the importance of divine guidance, —she said calmly—. But if the Kingdom's troops are going to fight, they need decision-making authority. Waiting for approval for every movement would mean losing cities before we can react.

The Heralds slightly tightened their jaws.

The concession displeased them.

But rejecting it openly would be dangerous.

Because even they understood one uncomfortable truth:

Without cooperation… the Empire would not survive.

Naira concealed her satisfaction with the natural grace of an empress.

That alliance represented a truce, an opportunity, and above all, military relief… so long as she knew how to move the correct pieces.

And keep close the man who could change her destiny.

—I accept the proposal, —she finally declared—. For the good of the Empire. And for the future of all.

She approached the map spread across the table.

Her gaze shifted toward Lusian for only an instant, enough for Elizabeth to perceive the interest hidden beneath that mask of impeccable courtesy. Then she returned her attention to the maps and reports the Heralds displayed before her.

She moved her hands with precision, suggesting changes, requesting clarifications, and reorganizing strategies without ever losing the appearance of cooperation. Yet even so, she made it clear that no one in that chamber could ignore her.

—Let us begin with the critical zones, —she added—. With the guidance of the Heralds and the cooperation of the Kingdom, perhaps we can keep the Empire standing.

Elizabeth slightly inclined her head. Then she looked for Lusian behind her: alert, silent, and steady, like a bastion amid that game of crossed interests.

The silence that followed was heavy with tension and mutual vigilance.

Everyone in that chamber understood the truth hidden behind every word and every glance.

They were being constantly evaluated.
