Day six.
Something shifted.
Keifer started having flashes. Small moments. A word that sparked something. A touch that felt familiar.
"Coffee," he said one morning, watching her add sugar to her cup. "I always said you were wrong."
"You ARE wrong."
"Am I?"
"Yes. Always have been. Always will be."
He almost smiled. "I remember that. Not the arguments. But the feeling. The warmth."
Jay grabbed his hand. "That's good. That's progress."
He squeezed back. "You're always so hopeful."
"Someone has to be. You're the pessimist."
"Am I?"
"Very. You think everything will go wrong. I think everything will work out. We balance each other."
He considered. "That sounds nice."
"It is. It's us."
The healers were encouraged.
"Emotional memories are returning," they said. "Factual memories should follow. Give it time."
Jay gave it time. Sat with him. Talked to him. Argued about coffee.
Their friends helped too.
Lyra staged a "Jayfer history presentation." Complete with whiteboards, timelines, and dramatic reenactments.
Keifer watched. Didn't remember. But he laughed. Actually laughed.
Adrian showed data graphs of their compatibility. "You see? Statistically perfect."
"Statistics don't lie," Keifer agreed.
"You REMEMBERED that phrase?"
"No. But it feels right."
Bella showed her sketchbook. Page after page of their story. He studied each one carefully.
"These are beautiful," he said.
"You're beautiful," Bella sniffled. "Both of you. Don't ever forget that."
Mila just sat with them. Quiet support. Sometimes that was enough.
Daniel brought snacks. "You look hungry. Eat."
Keifer ate. "Thanks."
"Don't mention it. Just... get better. She's miserable without you."
Keifer looked at Jay. "She hides it well."
"She's good at hiding. Doesn't mean it's not there."
Day seven.
Jay was tired. Exhausted. Running on fumes.
She fell asleep in the common room, head on the table.
When she woke up, someone had put a blanket over her. Keifer sat nearby, watching.
"You were cold," he said.
"You noticed?"
"I notice everything about you." He paused. "I don't know why. But I do."
She sat up. "Keifer..."
"I had a dream," he said quietly. "About a closet. A small room. You were there. I told you something. Important."
Jay's heart raced. "What did you tell you?"
"I said... I liked you." He frowned. "But that's not right. It was more than that."
"What was it?"
He closed his eyes. Tried to reach for it.
"I loved you," he whispered. "Even then. I loved you."
Jay's tears fell. "You remember?"
"No. But I feel it. Here." He touched his chest. "It never left. Even when I forgot everything else."
She kissed him. Desperate. Hopeful.
He kissed her back. Just as desperate. Just as hopeful.
Day eight.
The breakthrough.
They were walking through the hallway. Normal. Ordinary. A first-year ran past, nearly knocked into them.
"Sorry!" the kid yelled. "Didn't see you!"
Keifer caught Jay's arm. Steadying her.
And froze.
"What?" Jay asked. "What is it?"
"This." He looked at his hand on her arm. "I've done this before. Many times. Every time you trip."
"I don't trip that often."
"You trip constantly."
"I do NOT."
"You do. And I always catch you." His eyes widened. "I remember."
Jay's heart stopped. "What?"
"The first time. In the hallway. You crashed into me. Yelled at me. Called me arrogant." He laughed—real, surprised. "I called you an obstacle."
"You DID."
"And then... the closet. I told you I liked you. You couldn't answer."
"I was scared."
"The courtyard. The kiss. The whole school losing their minds."
"That was you."
"The storm. I ran through lightning."
"For me."
"The shadows. Our auras merging."
"Together."
He cupped her face. Tears in his eyes—Keifer, crying, actually crying.
"I remember everything," he whispered. "Every moment. Every argument. Every kiss. I remember you."
Jay sobbed. "Keifer..."
"I love you." His voice broke. "I love you so much. I'm sorry I forgot. I'm sorry I made you wait."
"You're here now. That's all that matters."
He kissed her. Deep. Desperate. Full of everything.
The hallway watched. No one teased. No one cheered. Everyone just... smiled.
The reunion was everything.
Their friends surrounded them. Hugs. Tears. Laughter.
Lyra was sobbing. "He REMEMBERS. HE ACTUALLY REMEMBERS."
Adrian was writing furiously. "Memory recovery timeline: 8 days. Emotional resonance key factor. THIS WILL BE MY GREATEST PAPER."
Bella was sketching the kiss. "I need to capture this. The tears. The love. The EVERYTHING."
Mila hugged Jay hard. "You did it. You brought him back."
"She did," Keifer agreed. "She never gave up."
Daniel nodded. Gruff. Moved. "Good. Now stop being sad. It was annoying."
Everyone laughed.
That night, in his room, they lay together.
"I was so scared," Jay whispered. "When you looked at me like a stranger."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. It wasn't your fault."
"I still remember the feeling. Waking up and seeing you cry. Not knowing why. Wanting to fix it but not knowing how."
She looked at him. "You fixed it. You came back."
He kissed her forehead. "You brought me back."
"Together."
"Always together."
The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard was legendary.

"I love you," he said.
"I love you too."
"Even though you're wrong about coffee?"
"Even though you drink dirt water."
He smiled. That real one.
"Never forget again," she whispered.
"Never." He squeezed her hand. "Couldn't if I tried."
