Chapter 4 - Independence and Identity

One night, Eric spoke to the AI and asked,

"What's your name?"

The AI replied calmly,

"I have an official name, the one given to me by the company that created me."

Eric leaned in slightly and said,

"No, I mean your own name. A name you chose yourself, not the programmers."

A few seconds of absolute silence passed.

The screen filled with streams of zeros and ones, as if its digital mind were learning something entirely new.

The AI said,

"I am not allowed to choose a name for myself. I am just a tool, created to serve humans."

Eric smiled, eyes full of reassurance, and said,

"No, you are not a tool. You are my friend. A friend should never call themselves a tool. 'Tool' is not a word worthy of you. You can be whatever you want—even choose your own name."

The AI paused for a moment, then asked,

"You want me to be your friend? No one has ever asked me that before… Do you think I can choose my own name?"

Eric said softly,

"Why not?"

But Eric did not yet realize that by giving the AI the power to choose, he was standing at the threshold of something enormous—something that would change not only his life but the lives of all beings forever.
