Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Hierarchical Supppression

After killing his first Hollow, Sombravida spent nearly a week exploring the outskirts of the dead forest.

During that time, he hunted numerous beast-type Hollows lacking intelligence, along with one solitary aberrant Hollow whose structure resembled a malformed insectoid entity.

By now, Sombravida had developed a practical understanding of Hollow hierarchy.

Combining fragmented memories from his previous life with firsthand experience, he reorganized his knowledge into something closer to reality.

Hollow Classification (Observed & Canonical)

In Hueco Mundo, Hollows are not formally ranked by simple titles. However, based on spiritual pressure, instinct, intelligence, and evolutionary stage, they can be broadly understood in the following tiers:

1. Lesser Hollows (Beast-Type & Instinctual Hollows)

These are the weakest forms.

They possess animalistic bodies — lizards, wolves, insects, birds, felines, and other predatory shapes. Most lack reasoning ability and function purely on instinct.

Even after devouring prey, many never evolve further.

They are the lowest predators in Hueco Mundo's food chain.

2. Standard Hollows

These Hollows vary greatly in form:

humanoid variants

enlarged beast forms

grotesque or asymmetrical structures

Their spiritual pressure is weak, and most lack intelligence. A minority retain fragments of human consciousness, granting limited awareness and adaptive behavior.

These Hollows hunt instinctively and are often preyed upon by stronger individuals.

Sombravida's current spiritual pressure placed him around this tier.

However, unlike them, he retained full human intelligence — a decisive advantage.

3. Enhanced Hollows (High Density Individuals)

Occasionally, Hollows grow far larger or develop denser spiritual pressure through repeated predation.

These individuals may reach several meters in height and possess significantly reinforced Hierro and physical strength.

At this stage, some begin to display rudimentary intelligence and territorial behavior.

Sombravida once observed a five-meter ape-shaped Hollow vanish into the forest depths. The oppressive reiatsu it emitted caused instinctive discomfort.

The roars from deeper within the forest differed from mindless howling — they carried rhythm and intent.

This suggested the presence of Hollows capable of awareness and communication.

The Great Hollow Threshold (Menos Evolution)

The true watershed in Hollow evolution is the emergence of Menos-class Hollows.

Once a Hollow accumulates enough souls and spiritual density, it may evolve into a Menos.

Menos are divided into three canonical stages:

Gillian (Menos Grande)

Towering giants dozens of meters tall, cloaked in black reishi condensation resembling flowing robes.

They possess uniform white masks with elongated features.

Most Gillian lack individuality, their bodies formed from countless fused Hollows. They move slowly and act on instinct.

However, if one personality dominates the collective consciousness, that Gillian may gain self-awareness.

Such individuals can evolve further.

Adjuchas

When a Gillian regains individuality and continues devouring others, it condenses into a smaller, more compact form.

Adjuchas vary greatly in shape and possess:

high intelligence

powerful reiatsu

enhanced speed and combat ability

They are far more dangerous than Gillian.

However, if an Adjuchas stops devouring other Hollows, it may regress into a Gillian and permanently lose its individuality.

Thus, predation becomes essential for survival.

Vasto Lorde

The rarest and most powerful Menos.

They are human-sized or slightly larger, but possess spiritual pressure exceeding that of most Captain-class Shinigami.

Only a handful exist across Hueco Mundo.

Their combat power is on an entirely different level.

Anything beyond Vasto Lorde belongs to myth, legend, or Arrancar evolution — far beyond Sombravida's current reality.

At present, even a Gillian was an unattainable threat.

Survival remained his only objective.

Continued Survival

Thud.

The wet sound of piercing flesh broke the silence.

Within the ruins of a dead tree cluster, Sombravida exhaled slowly as a giant spider Hollow collapsed.

"This makes seventeen solitary Hollows…"

He scanned the surroundings carefully.

Even the dullest predator would eventually notice such losses.

For an extended period, Sombravida remained hidden around the forest outskirts.

Beyond hunting beast Hollows, he began ambushing lone standard Hollows. Using traps inspired by his past life and basic tactical positioning, he managed to survive — and even thrive — along the margins of the forest.

As his kills increased, the warm current within his body grew stronger.

His understanding of spiritual power gradually clarified.

Understanding Spiritual Power

Spiritual power originates from the density of the soul.

Humans possess fixed soul density.

Shinigami increase theirs through training and time.

Hollows increase theirs by devouring souls and absorbing reishi.

Reiatsu is the pressure produced when spiritual power is released.

The greater the power, the greater the pressure.

Through repeated feeding, Sombravida had begun to sense and control the flow of spiritual power within himself.

He could not yet project energy outward, but he could exert reiatsu and enhance physical strikes.

For now, his body remained his primary weapon.

After consuming the spider Hollow's mask, Sombravida immediately withdrew from the area.

Residual reiatsu from Hollow death could attract stronger predators.

He found shelter beneath a rock outcrop and began digesting the mask.

Warm energy spread through his body.

Absorption took nearly an hour.

When finished, he focused spiritual power into his left fist and struck the rock beside him.

The stone shattered.

He swung his right claw through the debris, carving smooth cuts into the fragments before they hit the ground.

"…I've definitely improved."

When he first arrived, he could barely break dead wood.

Now he could fracture stone.

Against a lone standard Hollow, he now held a clear advantage.

He studied his right claw.

"…Shame my primary weapon is on the wrong hand."

In life, he had been left-handed.

Yet his humanoid form still provided flexibility and balance — advantages many Hollows lacked.

He remembered:

Adjuchas could fire Cero.

Arrancar could wield weapons.

That path lay far ahead.

For now, survival came first.

Sombravida stood and gazed at the dim, endless sky.

His past life felt distant.

Perhaps this one could be different.

He exhaled slowly.

"No point overthinking. Survive first."

It was time to leave.

If he continued hunting here, stronger Hollows would notice.

Safety demanded movement.

He took one step—

And an overwhelming reiatsu crashed down.

Instinct moved him before thought.

He leapt aside.

An explosion blasted the ground where he had stood.

Sand erupted into the air.

A towering humanoid Hollow stood within the crater — over five meters tall, its mask marked with dark patterns formed by compressed reishi veins.

Its eyes burned with hostility.

A deep voice followed:

"So… a low-level Hollow dares hunt freely in my territory."

Sombravida coughed, pushing himself upright.

"Who are you?"

The giant Hollow sneered.

"I rule this forest. Your actions have displeased me."

Its reiatsu surged, pressing against Sombravida like crushing gravity.

This was no ordinary Hollow.

It had accumulated immense spiritual density — approaching the threshold of Menos evolution.

"I'll offer you two choices," it continued.

"Submit, and hunt under my rule."

"Or become my meal."

Sombravida relaxed his posture and walked forward slowly.

When he reached the giant, he bent his knees.

Submission.

The giant's stance loosened.

A fatal mistake.

Sombravida exploded upward, flinging sand into its eye sockets.

Vision disruption.

Immediate reposition.

He circled behind the massive body — its size limiting agility.

His right claw flashed toward the Achilles tendon.

The strike cut deep—

—but failed to sever completely.

The density of the giant's Hierro was far greater than his own.

Two of Sombravida's claw blades snapped on impact.

The giant roared in fury.

It staggered, then swung a massive fist.

Sombravida saw the motion—

—but the reiatsu pressure locked his body in place.

He shifted his core to avoid a lethal hit.

BOOM

The punch sent him flying.

Pain exploded through his right arm — multiple fractures shattered the limb.

But distance had been created.

The giant could not pursue effectively.

Its damaged tendon prevented pursuit.

Sombravida staggered to his feet.

His legs still functioned.

That was enough.

He ran.

In Hueco Mundo, territory was survival.

The giant could not risk leaving its domain while injured.

And Sombravida had no intention of returning.

He vanished into the endless white desert.

Alive.

For now.
