Chapter 9 - The Fracture Beneath the Roots

Night in the Elven Kingdom was not dark.

It shimmered.

Silver leaves reflected moonlight like scattered stars, and the air carried a faint glow of mana drifting between branches. To most, it was peaceful.

To Lin—

It was wrong.

He stood alone near the balcony edge, eyes half-closed, not meditating… listening.

Not with ears.

With perception.

Deep below the palace, something pulsed again.

Not violently.

Not loudly.

But unnaturally.

Like a heartbeat that did not belong to this world.

Behind him, Luna's voice came quietly.

"You felt it again."

He nodded once.

"Yes."

She didn't ask what it was. She didn't need to.

Instead, she leaned against a pillar, arms folded.

"Portal?"

"Older than the portal."

That made her eyes sharpen.

Beneath the World Tree

At the same time, far below, High Elder Vaelor moved through the root corridors alone.

No guards.

No attendants.

The roots of the ancient world tree formed natural archways, glowing faintly with internal light. In the very center, where the roots spiraled into a hollow chamber, a translucent veil shimmered in the air.

The Multiverse Gate.

It wasn't open.

But it wasn't closed either.

It flickered.

For a brief second—

A distortion rippled across its surface.

And something pressed back.

Vaelor lifted his hand slowly, releasing a controlled surge of elven mana. The veil stabilized.

But not completely.

His expression hardened.

"This is not natural instability…"

It was responding.

To something.

Or someone.

A Scout Goes Silent

Above ground, one of the outer patrol scouts moved quietly through the forest perimeter.

Elven senses were sharp.

Their territory was sacred.

And tonight, the air felt heavier than usual.

The scout stopped.

A branch cracked.

He turned sharply—

Nothing.

Silence.

Then—

The wind shifted backward.

Not forward.

Backward.

His eyes widened.

A shadow peeled itself from between two trees.

Not fully formed.

Not fully present.

He raised his bow—

And the shadow flickered.

Gone.

The scout exhaled slowly, calming himself.

"Just nerves."

He turned to signal his squad—

But they were gone.

No footprints.

No sound.

No presence.

Only silence.

Then—

The distortion pulsed again.

This time closer.

Lin Moves

Back in the palace hall, Lin opened his eyes.

He had felt the shift.

Not from the portal.

From the forest.

A disruption in pattern.

Subtle.

But deliberate.

He turned.

Emilie was already watching him.

"You're going," she said.

"Yes."

Lucifer stood from his chair without a word.

Luna stepped forward.

"No aura," she reminded.

Lin gave a faint nod.

"Not unless necessary."

They moved without announcement.

No escorts.

No formal permission.

Just four shadows slipping into silver night.

The Vanished Patrol

They found the first sign half a mile beyond the outer boundary.

An elven bow.

Broken cleanly.

Not snapped.

Severed.

Lucifer crouched near the ground.

"No blood."

Emilie closed her eyes briefly.

"There's residue."

"From?" Luna asked.

Emilie hesitated.

"…Not from this plane."

Silence settled heavily.

Lin stepped forward, touching the bark of a nearby tree.

His fingers traced faint ripples across the surface.

"Spatial pressure."

Lucifer's eyes narrowed.

"Something crossed."

"No," Lin corrected softly.

"Something is trying to."

The First Manifestation

The air in front of them twisted.

Not violently.

Like heat above sand.

A vertical tear formed — thin, unstable.

Luna's grip tightened around her sword.

Still no flames.

Still no aura.

The tear widened just enough for something to push through.

A limb.

Long.

Obsidian-like.

Not fully solid.

It clawed against the air itself.

Lucifer moved first.

Pure sword instinct.

One clean slash.

The limb severed—

But it did not fall.

It dissolved into particles of distorted light.

The tear flickered violently.

Then snapped shut.

Silence.

No explosion.

No roar.

Just the forest returning to stillness.

Emilie's voice came low.

"That wasn't a creature."

Lin nodded.

"It was a probe."

Luna exhaled slowly.

"Something's testing the barrier."

High Elder Arrives

A surge of wind passed through the trees.

High Elder Vaelor appeared, staff in hand.

His eyes scanned the area quickly.

"You saw it."

Lin met his gaze calmly.

"Yes."

Vaelor studied the broken distortion in the air.

"Three patrol members are missing."

Lucifer's jaw tightened slightly.

"It's not hunting randomly."

"No," Lin agreed.

"It's measuring resistance."

Vaelor looked at him sharply.

"You speak as though you understand it."

Lin's eyes didn't waver.

"I understand pressure patterns."

A tense silence followed.

Then—

Another pulse.

Stronger.

From beneath the world tree.

The ground vibrated lightly.

Not destructive.

But warning.

Vaelor's voice lowered.

"The gate will not hold if this continues."

Luna finally spoke.

"Then we don't let it continue."

Vaelor looked between them.

"You are not citizens of this kingdom."

Lucifer stepped forward slightly.

"No."

Emilie's eyes glowed faintly — barely visible.

"But we are here."

Silence.

The forest waited.

Then Vaelor made his decision.

"Come," he said.

And for the first time—

He did not treat them as guests.

He treated them as allies.

Beneath the Roots — Together

They descended through the glowing root corridors.

The chamber opened before them.

The Multiverse Gate flickered more violently now.

Its surface trembling.

Pressure building from the other side.

Lin stepped forward slowly.

Not touching it.

Just observing.

His expression grew serious.

"This isn't invasion."

Everyone looked at him.

"It's displacement."

Vaelor frowned.

"Meaning?"

Lin's eyes sharpened.

"Something was forced out of its world."

Another pulse struck the veil.

Harder this time.

A crack formed.

Thin.

But real.

Luna moved to his side.

"You're thinking something bigger is coming."

Lin answered quietly.

"Yes."

And for the first time—

A faint line of concern appeared on his face.

Not fear.

But calculation.

If the crack widened…

They would not be able to hide their strength anymore.
