Chapter 35 - Effective

The juvenile wyvern was about the size of a horse, if a horse had wings and a tail covered in bony plates and absolutely no interest in being reasonable.

It was sitting in the middle of the mountain pass road, screeching at a toppled merchant cart. The merchant was hiding behind a rock about forty feet back. He'd been the one to post the contract.

"That's a D-rank?" Ashara said.

"Juvenile," Daniela said, lance already in hand. "Adults are B-rank."

"Cool. Great. Love that."

The wyvern spotted them. Its head snapped around, yellow eyes locking on, and it screamed, this high, raw shriek that bounced off the cliff walls on either side of the pass.

"Flank left," Daniela said. "I'll draw its attention. When it commits to me, hit it from the side."

"Got it."

Daniela moved forward, lance low, steps measured. The wyvern hissed and turned its body to face her. Its tail dragged across the road, knocking loose stones off the edge.
