Chapter 60 - Goblin Vs Ice-Ape

The mountain did not welcome them.

It breathed.

A long, frost-laced exhale rolled down the jagged slopes, slipping between shattered cliffs and ancient stone like a warning whispered too late. Snow clung to everything in sight, not in soft blankets but in hardened layers of ice that had long since forgotten what warmth felt like. Even the wind carried weight here, dragging itself across the peaks with a low, mournful howl that seemed to echo something older than memory.

And then—

The mountain roared back.

The cave ahead didn't simply open; it split, as if something inside had decided the world outside was finally worth stepping into. Ice cracked along its edges, shedding shards that shattered against the ground as a hulking silhouette pushed forward. What emerged was no mere beast, no simple predator carved from muscle and instinct. It was something forged from the mountain itself.

A colossal, ape-like troll dragged itself into the pale light, each step carving dents into the frozen earth beneath its weight. Its body was a grotesque monument of raw power, thick cords of muscle layered beneath frostbitten skin that shimmered with an unnatural sheen. Two massive tusks jutted from its lower jaw, curved and jagged, their surfaces layered with ice that steamed faintly with each guttural breath it released. That breath came out in heavy bursts, fogging the air like a furnace trapped beneath snow.

Then it struck its chest.

Once.

Twice.

Each impact echoed like thunder against the cliffs, sending tremors through the ground. But the real terror wasn't the sound.

It was the aura.

A pale, ghostly white began to leak from its body, spreading outward like an infection. Wherever it touched, the world surrendered. Snow hardened into ice, ice thickened into jagged formations, and the very air seemed to crystallize under its influence. In mere seconds, the ground around the cave transformed into a frozen domain that bent to the beast's presence.

And within that frozen storm, two blood-red eyes locked onto a single figure.

Haruna stood there, unmoving.

The wind tugged at her hair, the cold gnawed at her skin, and the oppressive aura pressed down on her like a collapsing sky, yet none of it reached her expression. If anything, there was a faint spark in her gaze. Not fear. Not hesitation.

Interest.

A slow breath escaped her as she adjusted her stance, feet grounding against the frozen terrain as if she were planting herself into the mountain itself. The moment stretched, tension tightening like a drawn bowstring—

—and then it snapped.

She moved first.

The world blurred as Haruna launched forward, her body cutting through the freezing air like a blade. The troll answered with a roar that shook the heavens, unleashing a pulse of force that rippled outward. It wasn't just sound. It carried weight, pressure, a crushing intent meant to stagger and dominate anything foolish enough to approach.

It hit her head-on.

For a split second, her movement faltered. Her muscles tightened, her vision flickered—

—and then she forced through it.

Her teeth clenched, boots digging into the ice as she pushed forward with sheer will, tearing through the invisible pressure like it was nothing more than a passing inconvenience. The beast's attempt to halt her advance shattered under the simplest truth.

She was stronger.

Seeing her break through, the troll didn't hesitate. Its massive arms rose high above its head, muscles swelling as it gathered every ounce of its monstrous strength into a single, devastating blow. The air warped around its descending fists as they came crashing down, aiming to reduce her to nothing more than a stain beneath its weight.

Haruna didn't slow.

She stepped into it.

The impact detonated against the ground with a force that tore through the landscape. Ice shattered outward, snow erupted into the air, and the very atmosphere rippled from the sheer violence of the collision.

For a moment, everything vanished into white.

Then the dust began to settle.

And there she was.

Haruna stood beneath the troll's fists, her arms raised, her body braced as she held them back. The ground beneath her feet cracked, fractures spiderwebbing outward as her muscles strained against the impossible weight pressing down on her.

Her shoulders trembled. Her arms quivered.

And then she smiled.

A sharp, exhilarated grin spread across her face as something deeper ignited within her. Her Astrons surged, flooding into her muscles, weaving through her body in precise, deliberate currents. This wasn't reckless power. This was control. A perfect synchronization of energy and flesh.

Her strength spiked.

With a sudden burst, she pushed upward.

The troll's balance broke.

Its massive frame lifted just enough, just for a moment, and that was all she needed.

Haruna vanished from beneath it.

She reappeared above.

A violent gust of wind exploded beneath her feet as she propelled herself into the air, twisting her body mid-motion before descending like a falling star. Her leg came down in a spinning arc, carrying enough force to fracture the very air around it.

The impact landed square against the troll's forehead.

A shockwave burst outward, snapping through the beast's nervous system like lightning. Its head jerked violently, its body staggering as its senses scrambled under the sudden overload.

But it didn't fall.

With a guttural snarl, the troll lashed out blindly, swinging one massive arm toward her mid-air form, aiming to swat her from existence.

Haruna adjusted instantly.

Her foot met its face.

Using it as a pivot, she pushed off—

—and exploded upward again.

The wind burst detonated point-blank, blasting against the troll's skull and forcing its head back as she escaped the incoming strike. The beast roared in frustration, its movements growing erratic as it tried to track her.

Too slow.

She landed on one of its tusks.

Balanced.

Still.

For the briefest heartbeat, the world went quiet.

Then she moved again.

Both hands clenched into a single fist as she leapt, rising just above its head before bringing everything down in one crushing blow. The air screamed as her strike descended, mirroring the same attack the monster had used moments ago.

Except hers was better.

Stronger.

The moment her fists connected, the world cracked.

A deafening impact echoed across the mountains as the force caved the troll's skull inward, the sheer power of the strike overwhelming its defenses entirely. The beast's body convulsed, its red eyes widening in a flash of pure, instinctual horror before the light within them shattered.

Its massive frame tipped forward.

Dead before it hit the ground.

Haruna pushed off, flipping back as the corpse collapsed behind her with a thunderous crash that sent another wave of snow and ice rolling across the terrain.

Silence followed.

The wind returned, quieter now, as if even it needed a moment to process what had just happened.

Haruna exhaled slowly, the tension leaving her body as she glanced down at the fallen beast, then over her shoulder toward the distant boulder.

"It's done," she said, her voice calm, almost casual. "You can come out now."

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then two cautious heads peeked out from behind the rock.

Elira's eyes were wide, her grip tightening slightly around Haruki as she stepped forward. "Did you really… kill it?" she asked, her voice carrying a mix of disbelief and lingering fear.

Kael followed close behind, still bandaged, still clearly not at full strength, but upright enough to move on her own now. Her gaze shifted between Haruna and the corpse, trying to reconcile what she'd just witnessed.

Haruna didn't answer with words.

She simply turned.

That was answer enough.

Elira approached first, carefully handing Haruki back to her. Kael followed, offering her sword with a respectful nod. Haruna accepted both without hesitation, securing the blade at her waist before placing the mask back where it belonged.

Then her attention shifted to the cave.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

"Let's check inside," she said, her tone sharpening slightly as the mission returned to focus. "If what we're looking for isn't there… then we head back. No detours. You need proper treatment."

Her eyes lingered on Kael for a moment, measuring her condition.

She nodded.

No arguments this time.

Together, the three of them moved toward the cave, stepping past the corpse of the mountain's fallen apex predator and into the darkness it had once ruled.
