Chapter 31 - Dawn Beyond the Frontier

Opposite to the Crimson Fortress and the Death Mountains stood a far larger mountain range, and the entrance to the Labyrinth of Chaos.

The Chaos Maw loomed like a wound carved into the tallest mountain. Even the raging winter seemed to acknowledge its presence. Snowstorms howled across the jagged peaks, yet the drifting flakes curved away from the dark opening, as if the cold itself refused to approach.

Authority.

A silent, ancient dominance that had influenced the land for centuries.

But that dominion was ending.

The blazing torches that lined the entrance had burned without fail for generations. Their flames had endured storms, time, and the slow erosion of the world itself.

Today, however, the fire had weakened.

What once roared like immortal beacons had dwindled into fragile sparks, struggling against the cold wind creeping in from outside.

The end of an era.

The era of Lord Charybdis's masterpiece.

The Chaos Maw Labyrinth had been conquered.

Before the entrance stood the massive door that had sealed the labyrinth from the world. It radiated a strange superiority, ancient and unmoving, as if it had watched countless lives come and go without ever acknowledging them.

Runes etched across its surface pulsed faintly.

Space twisted around it.

The ancient door groaned.

Then slowly... it opened.

A thin sliver of the outside world appeared.

At that exact moment, three figures materialized before it.

Haruto.

Hana.

Haruna.

Their eyes were shut tight, expressions tense as if they were bracing for something unknown.

Then a cold breeze slipped through the opening.

Fresh.

Sharp.

Alive.

Their eyes opened almost at the same time.

They were outside.

For a moment, none of them moved.

Haruto stepped forward first, crossing the threshold and entering the small cavern that led out of the labyrinth. His eyes carefully scanned the opening ahead where pale morning light seeped through.

More than a full day had passed since they had last seen the world beyond stone walls and endless darkness.

The sky beyond the tunnel was still dim, but the faint glow on the horizon made it clear.

Dawn was coming.

They walked through the cavern and stepped out into the snow.

The cold bit lightly at their skin.

Haruto and Hana instinctively lifted their heads, silently taking in the world around them.

For a moment... it didn't feel real.

They had truly been reincarnated into another world.

Seeing fantasy worlds through pictures, novels, or animations was one thing.

But standing in it...

Breathing its air...

Feeling the cold snow beneath their feet...

That was something else entirely.

A vast forest stretched out beyond the cavern entrance. Towering trees blanketed the mountainside, their branches heavy with snow that glimmered faintly under the growing light of dawn. The wind moved softly through the forest canopy, causing waves of snow to fall in quiet cascades from the branches.

The air carried the clean scent of pine and frozen earth.

Wild.

Untouched.

Alive.

Haruna watched the two of them with quiet amusement. The mask rested loosely in her hand as she leaned slightly closer and asked in a low voice,

"Is it that good?"

Haruki chuckled from within the mask.

"You know... we had snow too. But it hits different when you're in another world. Besides... we're in a forest. Nature is always beautiful, no?"

Haruna smiled faintly.

"Yes."

She closed her eyes for a moment and took a slow breath, savoring the crisp air filling her lungs.

Haruto, meanwhile, turned slightly and looked toward the distant horizon.

A massive mountain range rose far in the distance, their jagged peaks piercing through layers of drifting clouds. The first rays of sunlight had begun spilling over those towering giants, painting the snowy ridges in warm shades of gold and amber.

The long shadows of dawn stretched across the forest below.

The world was waking up.

Haruto watched the light spread slowly across the landscape.

A small smile formed on his face.

"It's the start of another day..." he murmured.

Excitement stirred within him as he clenched his fists.

He had one goal.

To protect his family.

And to live this new life to the fullest.

He had been given a second chance.

And he believed that was the very purpose of whatever mysterious phenomenon had brought them here.

He swore silently to himself that he would never waste it.

Turning toward Hana, he gave her a knowing smile.

The start of a new chapter.

Their story had only just begun.

Hana returned the smile without hesitation. She understood exactly what he meant.

Then Haruto looked toward Haruna.

"So... what are we waiting for?" he said with renewed energy.

"Let's get going, shall we?"

Haruna's expression brightened with excitement as she placed the mask back onto her face.

"Yes."

She stepped forward into the untouched snow.

"I will lead the way... master."

Haruto and Hana followed close behind as they began descending toward the forest below.

But unbeknownst to them...

A pair of eyes watched silently from the snow-covered branches high above.

Unblinking.

Patient.

Waiting.

...

As a new chapter unfolded in the lives of the young heroes who would one day decide the fate of this world, another story quietly began elsewhere.

Far beyond the mountains and frozen forests, within the territory of the great nation of Leonhart.

A vast plain stretched beneath the pale winter sky.

Snow covered the land like a silent ocean, broken only by the occasional cluster of bare trees standing stubbornly against the cold winds. In the distance, a massive wall of dark green rose along the horizon.

The Great Forest of Lunar.

Ancient.

Dense.

Unforgiving.

A single road cut through the white expanse, leading from the kingdom toward the forest's edge. Workers bundled in heavy coats shoveled tirelessly along the path, clearing away the snow that had gathered overnight.

This road was the kingdom's lifeline to the frontier.

And its final destination stood like a guardian before the forest itself.

A massive stone fortress.

Built where civilization ended and the unknown began.

Towering watchtowers stood at regular intervals along the border, each one spaced roughly six hundred feet apart, their silhouettes piercing the morning fog.

Soldiers patrolled the walls, their eyes always fixed on the dark treeline beyond.

For beyond that forest...

Monsters ruled.

At the fortress gate, a small group had gathered.

Nine adventurers stood together, their bodies wrapped in thick winter gear designed for long expeditions. Beneath the coats and cloaks were glimpses of armor, staves, and weapons.

Warriors.

Mages.

Veterans of the frontier.

Leading them were three figures.

The first was a tall warrior with a massive greatsword resting casually across his shoulder.

The second was a man whose presence alone commanded respect.

Duke Velnard Leonhart.

He wore a formal military uniform beneath a long coat designed to withstand the cold winds of the northern plains. One hand rested calmly on the hilt of a finely crafted rapier at his side.

The final figure stood close beside him.

A young boy.

Small in comparison, wrapped in a thick cloak, with a hood pulled low over his head and a mask covering his face. His fingers clung tightly to the edge of Velnard's coat as if trying to remain unseen.

Velnard stepped forward and handed over a guild identification card to the soldiers guarding the gate.

The guard glanced at the card.

Then froze.

His eyes widened instantly.

He snapped upright and bowed deeply.

"S-Sir Duke Velnard! Forgive me, I didn't recognize you!"

Velnard simply smiled and waved a hand dismissively.

"Don't worry," he said with an easy tone. "It's only natural."

The young soldier remained stiff with panic.

"I-I apologize! I should have—"

Before he could finish, another soldier came down the staircase from the watchtower above and smacked him on the back.

"Relax, rookie. You're making it weird."

She stepped forward with an amused grin before turning toward Velnard.

"Sorry about him," she said casually. "He's a big fan."

Then she tilted her head slightly.

"So... guess someone managed to come out of their room. How's Dora doing?"

"Nina..." Velnard recognized her immediately.

A knowing smile crossed his face.

"You know how it is," he replied. "Work never ends."

She just sighed knowingly, her gaze shifted toward the group of adventurers waiting behind him.

"Monster subjugation again?" she asked. "Should we be worried?"

It was a fair question.

The fortress stood at the very edge of the kingdom. If a monster stampede ever came from the forest, they would be the first to face it.

Velnard shook his head.

"No need to worry. It's only an investigation."

"We're searching for something."

Nina seemed satisfied with the answer.

Then her eyes drifted toward the boy clutching Velnard's coat.

She paused.

Her expression softened slightly.

With a quiet sigh, she reached into a small pouch at her belt and pulled out a tiny object.

She crouched down and held it out toward him.

"Here."

The boy hesitated and looked up at Velnard.

Velnard gave a small nod.

The boy carefully accepted the item and examined it.

A tiny emerald pearl.

Nina smiled warmly.

"It's a lucky charm," she said. "So be careful out there, alright?"

The boy gave a quiet nod.

She stood up and immediately pointed an accusing finger at Velnard.

"You know bringing a kid into the forest isn't exactly what nobles are supposed to do."

Velnard awkwardly looked away.

"Well... he insisted."

She sighed heavily before stepping aside.

"Just be careful."

Velnard gave a playful grin.

"So I don't get a lucky charm?"

She completely ignored him.

Instead, she straightened her posture and gave a crisp salute.

"Very well then."

"Good luck on your journey, adventurers."

Velnard nodded once and gestured forward.

The group began moving toward the forest.

The adventurers followed quietly behind him, though many of them looked slightly stunned.

It wasn't every day you saw a border soldier speaking so casually with one of the kingdom's most powerful nobles.

But it wasn't their place to question it.

Soon the group disappeared into the snow-covered trees.

Silence returned to the fortress gate.

The nervous rookie and Nina both watched the path they had taken.

Nina let out a quiet sigh, her expression thoughtful.

Then she turned and began walking back toward the stairs.

The rookie hurried after her.

"W-Wait!" he called. "Do you... personally know the duke?"

She stopped halfway up the stairs.

For a moment she looked confused.

Then her expression shifted slightly, and she looked away with a faint hint of embarrassment.

"It's nothing like that," she muttered.

"We're just... close."

The rookie's eyes immediately began sparkling.

"For how long?!"

Nina froze.

Then slowly placed a hand over her face.

"Just... don't go spreading rumors, alright?" she groaned. "Only our batch of guards knows about it."

"That's incredible!" the rookie whispered excitedly. "Lord Velnard is the coolest man I know! And I'm working with one of his lovers! This is the craziest day of my life!"

Nina stopped again.

Her shoulders dropped in defeat.

"Please stay quiet..." she muttered before disappearing into the watchtower above.

The rookie instantly straightened up at his post, desperately trying to hide the excitement on his face.

Beyond the fortress walls, the wind swept across the endless white plains.

At the edge of that frozen world, the Great Forest of Lunar waited in silence.

The snow-covered road that led into its depths slowly vanished beneath drifting flakes.

And just like that...

The adventurers' tracks were swallowed by the wilderness.

As if the forest itself had quietly accepted them.

Or perhaps...

Simply hidden them from the world.
