The moan that ripped from her throat was immediate and loud enough to echo off the bedroom walls.
Aya slapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes bulging. The sound hung in the air like smoke, impossible to take back and impossible to pretend it hadn't happened.
On the other side of the door, there was absolute silence.
The kind of silence that meant whoever was standing out there had heard exactly what they thought they had heard and was now questioning every decision that had led them to this door at this particular moment in time.
Aya's entire body burned with shame. She could feel it crawling up her neck, across her scalp, and down to her fingers. She wanted the floor to open and swallow her. She wanted to melt into the stone and become part of the architecture. She wanted—
