Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: Evolution Complete

Alexander lay inside his small stone hollow, his body stretched along the cold ground of the ravine. More than two days had passed since he had begun the analysis, and the air around him carried the heavy scent of meat, stone, and faint decay.

Beside him, thirteen corpses were piled together in a rough heap. Some belonged to the scaled predators, others to the fallen members of his former pack. They lay stacked upon one another, silent and motionless, waiting to be eaten or studied.

Alexander barely paid them any attention, because all of his focus was turned inward.

His head throbbed violently. For two days his mind had worked almost without pause, forced to process the torrent of genetic information released from the biomass he had consumed. The effort had left a dull pressure inside his skull and a heavy ache pulsing behind his eyes. At times it had felt as though his brain were being pushed beyond its limits, as if it were trying to contain far more information than it was meant to hold at once.

But now something was beginning to change.

The chaotic storm of data inside his mind was slowly calming. The scattered fragments of genetic information were finally settling into order, and as the analysis approached completion, the pressure weighing on his mind began to ease. He could feel the heaviness in his head fading, and his thoughts were becoming clear again.

Alexander slowly opened his eyes.

As he felt the last traces of mental strain dissolve, a surge of excitement stirred within him.

"Finally," he whispered.

His mind was no longer empty; instead, it now held countless pieces of new knowledge.

A small smile appeared on the predator's face.

It was so faint that it was almost impossible to notice, but it was there. As the final fragments of information settled into place inside his mind, Alexander could now clearly sense the structure he had been searching for. The foreign genetic arrangement no longer appeared chaotic; it was ordered, understandable.

"So you spent your entire life trying to develop this, huh?" he thought quietly.

The scaled queen had spent years shaping her own biology, patiently assembling genetic fragments taken from countless creatures she had hunted. Piece by piece, prey by prey, with every new gain she had altered herself a little more, eventually creating a complex biological structure.

But now that effort meant nothing.

Because all of that knowledge now rested within Alexander's mind. The result of years of work had become his power after a single battle.

The thought stirred a cold sense of pride and sharp ambition within him.

"It's all mine now," he thought.

And he knew he would take this knowledge much further.

But his mind was exhausted.

The dull ache behind his eyes had not completely disappeared, and pushing himself further right now could cause him to lose focus. Alexander lowered his head onto the cold stone and allowed himself to rest. The cave was silent; only the slow rhythm of his breathing and the distant echoes from deep within the ravine could be heard.

He did not sleep for long.

Only a few hours passed.

Then he rose to his feet again.

The moment he began designing his new template, the dull pressure inside his skull returned. This work required precision; every neural pathway had to be arranged carefully, every biological process balanced with the others.

As he worked, the pain sharpened.

Several times his mind reached its limits and he was forced to stop, resting only until the pressure eased slightly before continuing again.

Piece by piece, the template began to take shape.

And after roughly nine hours, the design was finally complete.

Alexander slowly rose to his feet.

His mind was tired, but there was also a new determination within him. He looked at the pile of corpses stacked inside the cave; the heavy, silent heap formed by the bodies of the scaled predators and the remains of his old pack was still there.

He pulled one of them out of the pile with his claw.

As the corpse dragged across the stone floor, the scraping sound echoed along the cave walls. Without wasting time, Alexander lowered his head and began tearing into the flesh. As the muscle fibers broke apart between his teeth, he could feel the warmth of the biomass spreading through his body.

This time, he was not eating simply to satisfy his hunger.

This evolution would not be short.

The changes he had designed in his mind were not small adjustments; they would reshape his entire body, altering multiple structures at once. He could already estimate how much energy such a transformation would require, and he had no intention of encountering problems because of a lack of energy.

So he continued eating without stopping.

His stomach filled more and more, but Alexander did not stop. He kept eating until he could feel the biomass accumulating inside his body. In a single sitting, he had consumed nearly half of the corpse.

Finally, he lifted his head.

His abdomen felt heavy now; his body had already begun processing the energy it had received.

"Enough," he thought.

Alexander closed his eyes and focused his mind on his new template and the ability [Genetic Assimilation].

A moment later, the transformation began.

Deep within his body, the biomass started to break apart. Cells abandoned their old structures and began reorganizing themselves according to the new genetic instructions.

As a heavy warmth spread through his body, his eyelids began to grow heavy.

Sleep slowly settled over him.

And a few minutes later Alexander lay completely motionless; while the transformation inside his body continued silently, a deep sleep finally took hold of him.

Alexander awoke to a single overwhelming sensation: hunger.

But this was no ordinary hunger. It was far more intense than anything he had experienced in a long time, wild, almost uncontrollable. His stomach felt as though it were tearing itself apart from within, while his thoughts grew hazy and his instincts clawed for control of his mind.

For a brief moment, the pressure of it made him feel as if he might go mad.

Fortunately, he didn't have to endure it for long.

The moment he opened his eyes, he noticed the half-eaten corpse lying directly in front of him. The sight left him no time to think.

Alexander lunged forward instantly.

His teeth sank into the flesh as he tore through the remaining meat, ripping apart muscle fibers and swallowing them rapidly. The hunger was so powerful that he barely paused to breathe, stripping every last scrap of flesh from the bones and devouring it.

Within minutes, nothing remained.

Only after the final piece slid down his throat did his mind finally begin to settle. The savage hunger receded, and his thoughts slowly cleared.

Alexander lifted his head.

That was when he began to notice the changes.

His skin felt different.

Slowly, he raised one forelimb and studied it. Faint overlapping scales now covered parts of his hide, dark and dense, each plate fitting neatly against the next. When he flexed the limb, he could feel something new beneath them.

A rigid structure.

Not quite bone, not quite armor—something between the two. A hardened lattice that reinforced the muscle beneath his skin. As he shifted his weight and pressed his claw against the ground, the new structure absorbed the pressure effortlessly.

Alexander could feel the difference immediately.

Blows that once would have reached his flesh would now strike something far harder first.

A low, satisfied rumble escaped his throat.

Then his eyes lifted toward the cave entrance.

That was when he noticed something else.

It was night.

Almost no light slipped through the narrow entrance of the cave; under normal circumstances, the interior should have been completely dark. Yet Alexander could still catch even the faintest trace of light that seeped inside.

The tiny glimmer was more than enough.

His eyes adjusted instantly, shapes forming clearly within the darkness. The piled corpses, the uneven stone floor, the rough cave walls—everything stood sharp and visible.

His new eyes pierced through the night.

For a moment he simply stared into the darkness, testing the sensation.

Then a deep roar burst from his chest and tore through the silent night of the ravine. The sound echoed off the stone walls and rolled into the distance as the pride swelling inside him finally found release.

Only when that surge of pride began to fade did Alexander fall silent again.

As he calmed down, he became aware of his surroundings. The smell inside the cave had grown stronger; the stench of decay from the piled corpses had intensified.

That alone told him everything he needed to know.

He had been asleep for several days.

But right now, that hardly mattered.

There was only one thing he wanted to see.

The system.

Alexander focused his mind and opened it.

[STATISTICS]

CON: 17.8

STR: 15.3

AGI: 16.6

DEX: 12

INT: 23.8

[Biomass] – 23 / 23.1

[Drone Capacity] – 0 / 9

[Template Capacity] – 0 / 3

For a few seconds, his mind went completely blank.

Then a familiar feeling rose within his chest—silent but powerful.

Pride.

Alexander said nothing, yet the emotion swelling inside him carried a single undeniable truth:

He had grown far stronger.
