Chapter 17 - Chapter 18-When the World Tilted

The academy had a sound it only made before disaster.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

A subtle distortion in the rhythm of ordinary life.

Footsteps slightly too hurried.

Whispers slightly too sharp.

Eyes lingering a second too long.

Lucien noticed it the moment he entered the main hall.

Of course he did.

He always noticed.

Students clustered near the central notice board, tension vibrating through the air like a taut wire. No laughter. No idle chatter. Only that suffocating, collective unease.

Interesting.

Lucien adjusted his cuffs lazily and walked forward.

The crowd parted instinctively.

Not out of respect.

But fear.

He scanned the board.

And then—

He stopped.

For the first time in days, his expression truly changed.

EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT

All ranking evaluations are hereby suspended.

Effective immediately, the Favorability System will undergo recalibration.

New rule set pending activation.

Silence pressed against his skull.

Lucien read it again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Recalibration.

His eyes darkened.

That word did not exist in stable systems.

Behind him, a voice spoke.

Soft.

Careful.

"You've seen it."

Evelyn.

Lucien did not turn.

"Yes."

Her gaze lingered on the notice.

"This isn't normal."

"No."

Students whispered frantically around them.

"What does recalibration mean?"

"Is this because of the incidents?"

"Did someone break the system?"

Lucien's lips curved faintly.

Ah.

Panic.

How nostalgic.

Then—

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And died.

The entire hall plunged into darkness.

Gasps erupted instantly.

"What—?!"

"Power outage?!"

"No… wait…"

A low hum filled the space.

Deep.

Mechanical.

Wrong.

And then—

A voice echoed through the academy.

Not from speakers.

Not from walls.

But everywhere.

Cold.

Emotionless.

Absolute.

SYSTEM NOTICE

Recalibration sequence initiated.

New rule set activated.

All users stand by.

Lucien's pupils contracted.

Evelyn's breath stilled.

Adrian, standing across the hall, froze mid-step.

The voice continued.

UPDATE COMPLETE

Welcome to Phase Two.

The air itself seemed to collapse.

And suddenly—

Every student screamed.

Symbols ignited above their heads.

Blinding.

Violent.

Not the familiar Favorability numbers.

Something else.

Something far worse.

Lucien looked up.

And felt the world tilt.

Above one student:

[TARGET]

Above another:

[ELIMINATION CANDIDATE]

Above another:

[ASSET]

Above another:

[LIABILITY]

The hall exploded into chaos.

"What is this?!"

"Why does mine say liability?!"

"ELIMINATION?! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!"

Lucien's pulse spiked.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Because above Adrian's head—

Burned a single word.

Radiant.

Unavoidable.

[PRIMARY TARGET]

Lucien's smile vanished.

Evelyn stared.

"No…"

Adrian looked up slowly.

Saw it.

And for the first time—

True shock crossed his face.

The voice spoke again.

Phase Two Objective: Structural Optimization

Designated Targets must be neutralized.

Users will be rewarded accordingly.

Silence.

Then—

Screaming hysteria.

Neutralized.

Students backed away from Adrian instinctively.

Eyes wide.

Terrified.

Predatory.

Lucien did not move.

He simply watched.

Because above his own head—

A new symbol ignited.

Crimson.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

[EXECUTION AUTHORITY]

The hall went dead silent around him.

Students turned.

Saw it.

And recoiled.

Lucien stared upward.

For a long.

Long.

Moment.

Then—

He laughed.

Soft at first.

Then sharper.

Then something dangerously close to delighted.

Evelyn's voice cut through the noise.

"…Lucien."

He lowered his gaze slowly.

Eyes glowing with something unhinged.

"Well."

A faint smile curved his lips.

"That's new."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"This isn't real."

Lucien tilted his head.

"Oh, it's very real."

"This is manipulation."

Lucien stepped forward.

Rainwater from earlier still clinging faintly to his uniform, now glinting under the flickering emergency lights.

"No, Adrian."

His eyes gleamed.

"This…"

He gestured to the burning symbol above Adrian.

"…is evolution."

The voice continued mercilessly.

Execution Authority Activated

Neutralization rewards scale by target value.

Primary Target yields maximum compensation.

The temperature in the hall seemed to drop.

Students looked at Adrian.

Then at Lucien.

Then back at Adrian.

Calculation began replacing fear.

Lucien noticed instantly.

Of course he did.

He always did.

Evelyn grabbed his wrist.

Hard.

"Don't."

Lucien glanced down at her hand.

Then at her.

Amusement flickered.

"You think I initiated this?"

"I think you'll enjoy it."

Lucien's smile deepened.

"And you think I shouldn't?"

Evelyn's voice was low.

Deadly serious.

"If you take one step toward that symbol…"

A pause.

"You won't be able to come back."

Lucien studied her.

Really studied her.

That tension.

That fear.

That strange, dangerous concern.

Then—

He gently removed her hand.

"My dear Evelyn."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"There was never a path back."

Across the hall—

A student lunged.

Straight at Adrian.

Panic.

Instinct.

Desperation.

Adrian reacted instantly, dodging sideways.

More students hesitated.

Then—

Another moved.

Then another.

The hall tipped toward violence.

Lucien watched.

Eyes bright.

Mind racing.

Because this—

This was beyond anything he had predicted.

The system was no longer measuring affection.

It was weaponizing existence.

Adrian called out sharply.

"Everyone STOP!"

And somehow—

Miraculously—

They did.

That voice.

That authority.

That infuriating heroism.

Lucien's jaw tightened.

Adrian's gaze swept the hall.

"This is exactly what it wants."

Breathing hard, students stared.

Conflicted.

Terrified.

Adrian's voice steadied.

"If we turn on each other now, we lose."

Lucien smiled faintly.

Still preaching.

Still believing.

Adrian's eyes locked onto Lucien.

"You understand that, don't you?"

Lucien met his gaze.

Silence stretching like a blade between them.

Then—

Lucien answered softly.

"Yes."

Adrian blinked.

Students froze.

Even Evelyn stilled.

Lucien's smile sharpened.

"But understanding…"

His eyes flickered upward toward the burning word:

PRIMARY TARGET

"…does not require restraint."

The lights flickered violently.

The voice echoed once more.

Phase Two Commences

And this time—

No one moved.

Because everyone finally understood the same horrifying truth.

The game had changed.

And Lucien—

Had just been handed a throne made of catastrophe.
