Chapter 5 - chapter 6: “The Space Between Words”

In the biting chill of the night, Jinu sat beside Jia, still holding the torn sketch.

His fingers gently traced the creases.

"I don't understand why you drew me," he said quietly.

"But these lines… they feel real. Tell me honestly, Jia. Have we met before?"

Jia's heartbeat quickened.

"It was a dark day," she whispered.

"I was on a bus. Everyone around me looked happy… and I felt invisible."

She swallowed.

"Then I saw you. You were sitting by the window. So quiet. But your eyes… they didn't look calm. They looked tired. Like they were fighting something no one else could see."

She gave a small, fragile smile.

"In that moment, I didn't feel alone anymore."

Jinu didn't interrupt.

"When I sketch," she continued softly, "I don't think. I just draw what stays in my heart. And somehow… you stayed."

Silence stretched between them.

"I'm sorry if that was wrong," she added.

"I didn't mean to cross a line."

She stood slowly. "I should go. If I'm late—"

"Wait."

His voice was softer now.

"I don't want your apology," Jinu said, stepping closer.

"You think you drew me. But you didn't."

Jia looked confused.

"You drew the part of yourself you don't show anyone," he said quietly.

"That's why it feels peaceful. Because it's honest."

Her eyes filled, but she didn't look away this time.

"You're not wrong," she admitted.

"Maybe it's not just about the sketch."

Jinu's gaze didn't waver.

"When I saw you that day… something changed. I don't know what this feeling is yet."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"But when I'm near you… it's easier to breathe."

The night air grew still.

No confession.

No dramatic words.

Just something unspoken, hanging between them.

And for the first time—

Jinu didn't step back.
