Chapter 13 - transformation

Beyond the dark forest's borders, a caravan rolled along the narrow trade road—its lacquered wagons gleaming, iron-rimmed wheels freshly polished, and tall, well-fed horses stepping in disciplined rhythm. Even at a glance, the caravan's quality screamed wealth.

At its heart rode a bald, chubby man wrapped in layered silks, reclining within an overly decorated carriage inlaid with gold filigree. When a brilliant beam of light pierced the clouds above the forest canopy, his small eyes sharpened.

He leapt down with surprising agility.

"Bring it," he ordered curtly.

A servant hurried to obey, emerging with a crystal sphere forged from translucent spirit crystal. The man took it reverently, lifting it toward the fading pillar of light. The sphere shimmered, faint runes pulsing within as it captured the lingering traces of the phenomenon.

A greedy grin spread across his face.

When the light finally dissipated, he lowered the artifact and cradled it like a priceless treasure.

"We return to the capital," he announced, climbing back into his carriage. "Immediately."

As the caravan resumed its journey toward the empire's heart, he stroked the crystal ball and giggled.

"This kind of information will earn me a fortune…"

Deep within the dark forest, Seo awoke to anxious eyes fixed upon her.

Choi, Ling, Su, Bai and the five sisters.

Their faces were pale, exhaustion evident in the shadows beneath their eyes. Some looked on the verge of tears.

Seo frowned faintly and slowly sat up. Had something gone wrong?

She released a wave of spiritual sense outward, scanning her surroundings. Her spiritual radar expanded silently, brushing against trees, stones, the layered array she had painstakingly established. Everything felt intact. Stable.

No external threats.

Yet the atmosphere around her was suffocating.

Before she could speak, Choi suddenly lunged forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Seo, sobbing uncontrollably.

"You've been asleep for a month," Choi choked out. "We tried everything. You wouldn't wake up. I—I thought…"

A month?

Seo blinked in shock.

To her, it had felt like a single night of rest after cleansing the black fog.

She gently patted Choi's head, smiling reassuringly. "I'm fine."

Though Choi clearly wasn't convinced, she dragged the others toward the kitchen to prepare something nourishing.

Once alone, Seo sat down assuming a meditation stance.

Spiritual energy flowed carefully through her meridians and blood vessels. The truth revealed itself quickly—her meridians were strained, muscles overworked. Channeling such vast spiritual energy without body-tempering support had nearly broken her from within. Her month-long sleep had been forced recovery.

She exhaled slowly.

There was only one solution.

Runes formed at her fingertips.

One by one, she inscribed intricate arrays directly onto her flesh.

The pain was unbearable.

Her body trembled violently as lines of glowing script carved themselves beneath her skin. Yet she endured, jaw clenched, breathing steady.

When she finally withdrew her energy, the room was thick with steam and a pungent stench. A black, viscous layer coated her skin—the impurities expelled from deep within her body.

With a flick of spiritual energy, wind swept through the chamber, clearing the odor.

She stepped to the window and leapt.

The result stunned her.

Instead of dropping immediately, her body soared upward. Weightless. Effortless. Wind brushed against her face as she ascended before gravity gently reclaimed her.

Mid-fall, she spread spiritual energy beneath her feet—

And walked on air.

Step by step, she traversed the sky toward the waterfall.

Beneath the roaring cascade, she removed her clothes and stood directly under the torrent. Previously, the pressure had been nearly unbearable.

Now?

It felt like a gentle shower.

After washing away the murky substance, she examined herself.

Her body had transformed.

A firm, sculpted abdomen. Toned thighs. Slender yet defined arms. Her physique was balanced, powerful, breathtakingly beautiful. Her skin seemed to glow faintly.

Runic tattoos adorned her body—intricate cherry blossoms, roses, and geometric arrays interwoven flawlessly with the contract marks from her companions and guardian beast. They pulsed faintly with restrained power.

Her hair had turned a luminous silver.

When she infused spiritual energy into the runes, they glowed softly.

A chime echoed in her mind.

[Ding. You have mastered Law Manifestation. Reward: Complete knowledge of Spirit Runes and Law Manifestation.]

A torrent of comprehension flooded her consciousness. The missing link she had always sensed while crafting arrays—now whole. Perfect.

She opened her system notifications.

Dozens of automatic sign-ins.

Outrageous rewards.

Her cosmic points had reached an astronomical fifty thousand.

A faint smile curved her lips.

After cleaning and drying her clothes with warmed spiritual air, she returned to the courtyard.

A long table overflowed with dishes. The aroma alone made her stomach growl.

When the women emerged from the kitchen—

They froze. The looks on their faces were complicated.

Calling it shock would be an understatement.

The five sisters reacted first, instinctively drawing concealed weapons and launching forward.

Seo raised a single hand.

They froze mid-air.

Pinned.

Time itself seemed suspended around them.

She chuckled softly and lowered her fingers, setting them down gently before patting their heads.

Recognition dawned slowly.

Choi rushed forward, scanning Seo frantically. Her eyes locked onto a tiny mark on Seo's shoulder—a detail only someone intimately familiar would notice.

Relief flooded her expression.

She wrapped Seo in a fierce embrace.

"I'm glad you're alright."

Ling, Bai, and Su rushed in next, clinging tightly. The five sisters followed without hesitation.

Surrounded by warmth and trembling relief, Seo closed her eyes.

In both her lives, she had longed for something like this.

For connection.

For belonging.

A quiet nostalgia shimmered across her face as she allowed herself, just this once, to simply exist within the embrace.
