Morning came quietly. Not with urgency, not with noise but with a slow, deliberate softness that seeped through the edges of the wooden house and settled into the room like it belonged there.Light filtered through the window in thin strands, pale gold stretching across the floor, climbing the edge of the table, and finally resting where Xu Yang sat.
He had been awake for a while.Long enough to notice the way the light shifted. Long enough to realize he hadn't slept at all.
His tail flicked once against the wooden floor.
So this is what it feels like…( inner thought)
Not exhaustion and Not restlessness.
Something in between. The threads weren't visible. Not clearly like before. But they were there. He could feel them Closer than yesterday.Xu Yang lowered his gaze slightly.
Behind him, something shifted.A faint rustle of fabric. "Why are you awake?"
Xu Yang didn't turn immediately.Lin Chen's voice was still rough with sleep, low and slightly uneven, as if he had only just woken up. "Actually." Lin Chen muttered, "why am I awake?"Xu Yang glanced back.Lin Chen sat up slowly, one hand pressed lightly against his temple, eyes half-lidded as he tried to adjust to the light then he noticed. "You're staring again."Xu Yang blinked. Lin Chen squinted slightly at him. "Don't tell me you've been like this the whole time."Silence. "You have, haven't you."
Xu Yang turned his head away. Lin Chen exhaled softly, dragging a hand down his face. "This is getting strange."He swung his legs off the bed, stretching slightly before standing. "You used to sleep more." he added, glancing down at Xu Yang again. "You've been different lately."Xu Yang didn't respond.Instead, his tail flicked again, slower this time.Lin Chen watched him for a moment longer than usual. "If something's wrong." he said after a moment, quieter now, "you should just stay close."A pause. "Alright?"Xu Yang's ears twitched slightly. You're talking like I have a choice.Lin Chen huffed softly. "Look at me!" he muttered. "Talking seriously to a cat." But he didn't take it back.
Instead, Lin Chen walked toward the table and reached for the small bowl left over from the night before. He glanced inside before shooting Xu Yang an unimpressed look. "You didn't even finish your food properly," he said, though there wasn't much annoyance behind the words. Xu Yang looked back at him and replied that Lin Chen had made a mess too. That earned a soft laugh from him. Looking down at the black cat again, he shook his head and said that Xu Yang always made a mess anyway.Xu Yang simply stared at him in silence.
Lin Chen stared back for a moment before raising an eyebrow. Asking what that look was supposed to mean, he warned him not to give him that expression. In response, Xu Yang very deliberately turned his head away, making Lin Chen laugh quietly to himself. He nodded once and muttered that this reaction was exactly what he had expected.
The room gradually settled into a softer silence after that. Morning sunlight streamed through the windows and spread across the wooden floor, warming the quiet house around them. For a brief moment, everything almost felt normal again. After setting the bowl back down, Lin Chen crouched beside Xu Yang and informed him that he would be coming along today. Xu Yang's ears flicked once in response. Lin Chen added that there would be no wandering off, then paused and corrected himself with a small sigh, saying that Xu Yang should at least try not to wander away this time.
Xu Yang glanced at him without moving. That depends on what happens,he thought silently.Lin Chen reached out and lightly tapped the top of his head before shaking his own. He muttered for Xu Yang not to look at him like that, but a moment later his voice softened considerably as he quietly added, "Just stay close."The village looked the same. That was the first problem. People moved through their routines walking, talking, working as if nothing had changed. As if yesterday had never happened. As if nothing had broken. But something was off.Xu Yang noticed it. A fraction too slow. A fraction too smoothike something had been adjusted not perfectly but enough.
Lin Chen walked beside him, carrying a small basket, unaware of the subtle shift beneath everything. "You're quieter than usual." he said casually.Xu Yang walked at his side.
You're louder than usual. ( ....)
Lin Chen sighed. "Or maybe I'm just thinking too much." They passed a small vendor stall.
"Fresh buns, hot just made "The vendor's voice rang out clearly. Then A pause."Fresh buns, hot ..just made.."Lin Chen slowed slightly. "Did he just ..."
The vendor suddenly stopped. He blinked in confusion before looking at the nearby villager. "What?" he asked. The villager frowned and told him that he had already said that. The vendor shook his head and insisted that he hadn't. The villager disagreed, saying he had just repeated the exact same words. "No, I just said it now." the vendor replied, sounding equally confused. A small silence settled between them. It wasn't panic or fear, but a subtle sense of unease that quietly spread through the street.
Lin Chen frowned slightly as he watched the exchange. "That's strange!" he muttered. Xu Yang remained perfectly still beside him. There it was again. Another moment.Nearby, a child dropped a wooden toy onto the ground with a soft clack. He bent down, picked it up, and then dropped it again in exactly the same way.The angle was identical, the movement was identical, and even the sound was identical.
The child froze and stared at the toy in confusion. "Why did it do that again?" he asked. His parent barely looked over before sighing. "Stop playing around." The child protested that he hadn't done anything. Xu Yang's eyes sharpened slightly as understanding settled in.This wasn't random and it wasn't reality breaking apart. It was repeating itself.Lin Chen slowly exhaled and rubbed the back of his neck. "Something's not right." he said quietly before muttering that he didn't like any of this. A faint breeze drifted through the street, brushing past everyone who stood there. For a brief moment, the entire world felt as though it was holding its breath.
Xu Yang's tail lowered slightly.
No…( ....) His eyes narrowed.
It's not holding.(....)
A quiet realization settled in.
It's adjusting.(....)
The world moved again.
But now He could feel it clearly.
Lin Chen exhaled slowly. "Alright… that's enough."He crouched down beside Xu Yang, his hand hovering briefly before resting lightly against his back. The touch was absentminded, grounding more for himself than for the cat."We're not staying out long today." he said quietly. "Something's wrong."
Xu Yang glanced up at him.
You're only noticing now. (....)
Lin Chen ran a hand through his hair, frustration flickering briefly across his expression. "I can't even explain it properly. It just… feels off."
Because it is.(....)
Because everything is.(....)
Because something is rewriting what you're allowed to notice.(.....)
Xu Yang looked away again, his tail lowering slightly as his attention shifted elsewhere. The threads were closer today. He still couldn't see them, but their presence was impossible to ignore. He could feel the air around him tightening and loosening at regular intervals. The sensation lingered at the edge of his awareness, subtle enough for everyone else to dismiss, yet impossible for him to overlook.
Behind them, footsteps approached.Lin Chen turned toward the sound and found a man standing a short distance away. He was dressed simply, nothing about him particularly eye-catching at first glance. And yet something about his presence felt deliberate, as though every step he had taken to arrive here had been intentional. Lin Chen frowned slightly before offering an apologetic smile. "Oh… sorry, I didn't notice you.""That's normal!" the man replied calmly.
Lin Chen adjusted the basket he was carrying and studied him for a moment. "Are you from this village? I don't think I've seen you before." "Passing through."the man answered.Lin Chen nodded slowly. "I see… traveling merchant? Or just… wandering?"
A brief pause followed before the man replied, "Something like that."It was not truth.Lin Chen noticed that immediately, but he didn't press further. Instead, he shifted the conversation elsewhere. "I'm Lin Chen!" he said after a moment."Yan Luo."Lin Chen gave a small nod and smiled politely. "Nice to meet you."Yan Luo inclined his head slightly in return. For a moment, the conversation felt entirely ordinary. The village continued bustling around them, people passing by without a second glance.
Lin Chen let out a breath, trying to ease the strange tension that lingered in the air. "You came on a strange day, though." he said, glancing toward the village behind them. Subtle distortions still rippled through ordinary movement there,Yan Luo's gaze shifted briefly in that direction as well. "I noticed!" he said calmly. Lin Chen gave a short, uneasy laugh and muttered that at least he wasn't imagining it. Yan Luo's attention then returned, not to Lin Chen, but directly to Xu Yang.
Lin Chen followed that line of sight. "You like cats?" he asked, the question coming out half curious and half cautious, as though he was testing something he couldn't quite define. Yan Luo didn't look away when he answered. "Yes!" he said simply.Lin Chen crouched slightly beside Xu Yang, resting a hand lightly on his back as if to reassure himself more than anything else. "He's been acting strange lately too," he added after a moment, his voice lowering slightly. "More than usual."
Yan Luo stepped a little closer then, not enough to seem threatening, but enough that the space between them felt deliberately measured. "He seems calm!" he said.
Xu Yang did not move. He did not react at all.
Lin Chen's gaze shifted between them, a faint unease settling deeper in his expression. Something about this interaction felt wrong, though he couldn't yet name what part of it was off."You want to hold him?" he asked suddenlyYan Luo's gaze flickered once, something unreadable passing through it in a way that lasted only an instant before vanishing again. "If you don't mind!" he said.
Then Lin Chen exhaled softly. "Alright. Just for a moment." Yan Luo reached out Carefully.Xu Yang allowed it.The moment he was lifted something shifted. Not visible but Lin Chen felt it."That's strange!" he murmured.Yan Luo said nothing. His hold was steady and Controlled. His gaze lowered slightly to Xu Yang."Ah..sorry!" A figure suddenly bumped into Lin Chen from the side.Lin Chen staggered slightly. "Hey..."Man stepped back quickly, raising his hands. "Didn't see you there."Lin Chen frowned. "You ?"Man grinned lightly. "What, I can't walk around?" "That's not what I..." Lin Chen stopped. Something felt wrong.
He turned.Yan Luo And Xu yang Gone. Lin Chen's expression froze."No." His gaze sharpened instantly, scanning the area. "They were right here."No footsteps, No movement and No trace. He turned slowly toward man .His eyes narrowed. "That wasn't an accident."That man didn't answer immediately. For a brief moment his expression shifted."Accident or not." he said lightly, "you should be more careful."
Lin Chen stepped forward, his expression hardening as he stared directly at the man. "Where is he?" he asked, his voice noticeably tighter than before. The man tilted his head slightly and calmly replied, "Who?" Lin Chen clenched his jaw before answering, "That man. And my cat." A brief silence followed as their gazes met. Then, a faint smile appeared on the man's face. "You already know the answer." he said. That alone was enough to confirm Lin Chen's suspicions. His hands slowly clenched at his sides as anger and worry settled into his expression. "You planned that!" he said.
The man neither denied it nor confirmed it. Instead, he simply told him, "Find him." Then he stepped back and turned away as though the conversation no longer concerned him. Lin Chen remained standing there for several moments, unmoving. Slowly, determination replaced the confusion on his face. "I'm not letting this go." he said quietly. Without another second of hesitation, he immediately began searching. Because this time he knew exactly what this was. This had been intentional from the beginning. And Xu Yang had been taken.
The air shifted the moment they left, but it didn't feel like traveling from one place to another. Instead, it felt like slipping between unseen layers of existence itself, moving through something that existed just outside the boundaries of ordinary reality. Yan Luo never slowed during the transition. He carried Xu Yang steadily in his arms, his movements controlled and practiced,When the distortion around them settled, they were no longer in the village. Everything was different. The sounds were gone. The movement was gone. Even the air itself felt quieter.
A moment later, Qing Li emerged from the same unseen distortion and let out a soft exhale. "You could've warned me before moving like that." he complained. Yan Luo didn't even turn toward him. "You kept him occupied long enough." he said. Qing Li clicked his tongue. "Barely. That one isn't as simple as he looks." "That's not who I was concerned about." Yan Luo replied. That drew Qing Li's attention. His gaze slowly shifted downward toward Xu Yang before he muttered, "Right."
Then Qing Li stepped closer and folded his arms while looking down at the small black cat. "So..." he said lightly, though the tension beneath his words was obvious, "are we going to keep pretending?" Xu Yang remained completely still. He didn't move. He didn't react. Yan Luo lowered his gaze for a brief moment before finally answering. "No." Another quiet silence followed before he loosened his hold and gently set Xu Yang down onto the ground.
The moment his paws touched the ground, the air around them tightened, not violently but with a deliberate pressure, as though something unseen had just acknowledged a change in state. Qing Li's eyes narrowed slightly as he felt it again, and he muttered, "There it is again."Yan Luo didn't respond. He was watching, waiting, completely focused as if he already knew something was about to happen. Xu Yang stood still for a moment longer before he finally exhaled and said, "You could've asked." his voice calm and fully human.
Qing Li froze instantly at the sound, while Yan Luo's gaze did not shift at all. The change that followed was quiet, without spectacle or force, like reality simply deciding to let go of a shape it had been holding. The cat form unraveled smoothly, fur receding as structure reformed, posture straightening until Xu Yang stood there completely human.
Yan Luo glanced at him and said, "You are looking handsome though." Qing Li snapped, "Are you stupid? Is this the time to compliment?" Yan Luo replied casually, "So when is the right time?" Xu Yang cut in flatly, saying, "Shut up for now." Qing Li stared at him and said, "You're not even trying to hide it." Xu Yang brushed his sleeve lightly and replied, "You already knew.""That's not the point." Qing Li said sharply.Yan Luo asked, "Since when?"
Xu Yang glanced at him and said, "Since I realized hiding didn't change anything." A brief pause followed before Qing Li exhaled and ran a hand through his hair, saying, "You know this is a problem, right?"Xu Yang tilted his head slightly and asked, "For who?"
"That's not funny," Qing Li said immediately.
"I'm not joking," Xu Yang replied.Silence settled briefly between them.Yan Luo stepped forward slightly and said, "You're at the center of it."Xu Yang didn't deny it.
Qing Li frowned and said, "The disturbances, the corrections, the freezes..."Yan Luo finished the sentence, saying, "They respond to you."Xu Yang lowered his gaze slightly before finally saying, "Not exactly."
That made both of them pause. Qing Li narrowed his eyes and asked, "Then what?" Xu Yang lifted his gaze again and said, "They're reacting," before adding after a brief pause, "Not to me." Another silence followed before he finished, "To what I represent." Qing Li frowned deeper and said, "That doesn't make it better." Xu Yang replied simply, "It wasn't meant to." Yan Luo's gaze sharpened slightly as he studied him and asked, "Then what are you?"
Xu Yang didn't answer. For a moment, even the air itself felt still again, as though the world was holding its breath to hear what he would say. Then he spoke, saying, "I don't know."Qing Li scoffed softly and said, "That's convenient." Xu Yang replied, "It's true."
Yan Luo continued watching him closely and said, "But you can control it." After a short pause Xu Yang shook his head slightly and said, "No," then added, "I can interrupt it."
Qing Li exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck as he said, "…That means you're not just part of the system." Yan Luo answered quietly, "No!" without taking his eyes off Xu Yang, adding, "You're affecting its function."
Xu Yang didn't respond right away. After a moment he said, "I didn't ask for that." Qing Li let out a short, frustrated breath and said, "No one ever does." Yan Luo added calmly, "That doesn't change the result."Another pause followed .Qing Li noticed it first and said, "It's reacting again."
Yan Luo replied, "To the conversation." Qing Li corrected him immediately, saying, "Or to him."Xu Yang lowered his gaze slightly and said, "It's getting faster." Yan Luo's expression sharpened as he asked, "Explain." Xu Yang exhaled slowly before saying, "Before, it lagged. Breaks, delays, inconsistencies." After a pause he continued, "Now it adjusts almost immediately."Qing Li frowned and asked, "So it's learning?" Xu Yang answered quietly, "No." After a brief silence he added, "It's adapting."
Yan Luo lowered his voice and said, "Then we don't have much time." Qing Li asked, "Time for what?" Yan Luo replied, "For it to decide what to do with him." The implication was clear when he added, "Erase him." and Qing Li muttered, "Or isolate him," before adding, "Or worse."Xu Yang didn't react outwardly, though his fingers tightened slightly at his side as he said, "It already tried once." Both of them turned their attention to him immediately. Xu Yang continued, "The freeze wasn't random." After a brief pause he added, "It was trying to correct something."
Yan Luo asked quietly, "You?" Xu Yang answered, "Yes." Qing Li exhaled and said, "And it failed." Xu Yang tilted his head slightly and said, "Not exactly." After another pause he added, "It paused."
That made both of them go still. Yan Luo was the first to speak, his voice quiet but precise as he repeated the word, "Paused." Xu Yang gave a slight nod and said, "It couldn't proceed." Qing Li asked, "Why?" and Xu Yang looked at him for a moment, something unreadable passing through his expression before he answered, "Because I didn't match anything it could replace."
Silence followed instantly. Qing Li frowned deeper and asked, "What does that even mean?" Yan Luo spoke slowly, as if piecing it together in real time, saying, "It means he doesn't belong to any existing thread." Xu Yang did not deny it. Qing Li stared at him for a long moment and said, "You're outside the structure." Xu Yang corrected him calmly, saying, "Partially." Qing Li exhaled and muttered, "That's not reassuring," to which Xu Yang simply replied, "It wasn't meant to be."Qing Li crossed his arms and asked, "So what now?" Yan Luo did not answer instead, he looked directly at Xu Yang and asked, "What happens when you interrupt it?"
Xu Yang hesitated then he said, "It stops." After a brief moment he added, "For a moment." Yan Luo immediately pressed, "And then?" Xu Yang answered, "It rewrites around it." Qing Li let out a sharp breath and said, "So you're not fixing anything." Xu Yang replied without hesitation, "No." Then after a short pause he added, "I'm delaying it."Yan Luo's gaze sharpened further as he said quietly, "Then delay isn't enough." Xu Yang agreed simply, "No."
Qing Li asked, impatience finally breaking through, "Then what is?" Xu Yang did not respond right away. Instead, he lifted his gaze, not toward them but toward the air itself, as if he were looking at something beyond what they could see. "There's a center," he said quietly. Yan Luo's expression shifted slightly as he asked, "The origin point?" Xu Yang shook his head faintly and replied, "Not exactly." Qing Li pressed again, asking, "Then what?"
Xu Yang lowered his gaze and said, "A convergence." Qing Li frowned and said it wasn't specific enough, but Xu Yang continued calmly, explaining that the threads were not random and that they all connected, always leading back to something. Yan Luo understood first and said, "A source." Xu Yang gave a slight nod and confirmed it. Qing Li looked between them and asked, "And you think we can reach it?" Xu Yang immediately said, "No," then after a brief pause added, "I think it's already reaching us."
That answer changed the atmosphere at once. Qing Li straightened slightly and asked, "You mean it's already active?" Xu Yang corrected him, saying, "It never stopped being active," and added, "We just started noticing." Yan Luo's voice lowered as he said, "Then the more we interfere…" Xu Yang finished the thought, saying, "The more it reacts."
Silence followed, heavier and more pressing than before, as Qing Li let out a slow breath and said, "So we're stuck." Yan Luosaid, "No." Both of them looked at him. He continued, "We're not stuck. We just don't approach it directly." Qing Li frowned and asked, "Meaning?" Yan Luo explained, "To understand the system, we observe its limits." Xu Yang quietly added, "Test it." Yan Luo said, "Yes." Qing Li muttered, "That sounds like a bad idea." Yan Luo replied, "It is." Qing Li asked, "Then why?" Yan Luo said, "Because doing nothing is worse."
After a brief pause, Qing Li asked, "Fine. Then what do we test?" Yan Luo did not answer instead, he looked directly at Xu Yang and said, "You." The air tightened instantly in response, subtle but undeniable, as Qing Li muttered, "It's listening again." Yan Luo said, "Good. Let it." Xu Yang said, "If we push too far…" Yan Luo said, "It will respond." Xu Yang said, "Yes." Then he added softly, "And this time, it might not stop."Qing Li exhaled and said, "So we either wait to be erased…" Yan Luo finished, "Or force it to show itself." Silence followed again, deeper this time.
Then Xu Yang spoke, saying, "We don't force it." Both of them looked at him as he continued, "We draw it out." Yan Luo asked, "How?" Xu Yang did not answer immediately. Instead, he stepped forward and said, "By becoming the point it can't ignore." The air tightened again, stronger this time, and Qing Li muttered, "That sounds like you're volunteering to be the target." Xu Yang did not deny it and said, "I already am." No one argued after that.
A faint ripple passed through the space. Yan Luo said, "It's getting closer." Xu Yang said, "Yes." Qing Li said, "We don't have much time." He then said, "Then we decide now." Yan Luo gave a single nod. Xu Yang did not move or speak, but something in his expression shifted into something quieter. And then a sound of fast, uneven footsteps broke through the stillness as Qing Li said, "Someone's coming."
All three of them turned at the edge of the clearing where a figure stood.Breathing unevenly. Eyes searching. There was Lin Chen standing. He had followed and found them. And then He saw.Yan Luo and Qing Li together. And between them Xu Yang.
Xu yang as human not cat.The moment stretched. No one spoke and everything Stopped.
