Chapter 7 - Before the Tide Moves

Jay arrived early.

Not early by choice, but by habit.

The location sat along the coast—an open stone courtyard stretching toward the docks, where the scent of salt lingered faintly in the air. Polished pillars marked the entrance, etched with the Aurelian insignia that caught the morning light. Beyond them, the sea shimmered quietly, restrained for now, as if waiting.

Jay stopped near the outer edge of the gathering area, adjusting the strap of his worn bag. Around him, the space slowly filled with voices—bright, excited, proud.

Students arrived in clusters, many flanked by parents or guardians. Laughter echoed. Quiet instructions were whispered. Some families stood a little taller than others, their expressions carrying satisfaction rather than nerves.

Luxury cars rolled in one after another.

Engines purred smoothly as doors opened, revealing students stepping out in tailored suits, polished shoes touching the stone with deliberate confidence. Some paused, letting the moment settle, eyes scanning the crowd as if measuring their place within it.

Jay watched silently.

He didn't miss the glances—some curious, some dismissive—but none lingered. He was easy to overlook, and he knew it. That, too, was a habit.

A sudden shift rippled through the crowd.

Whispers began before the engine even stopped.

A sleek black car slid into view, its surface reflecting the morning light like glass. The door opened, and Aric stepped out.

He didn't rush.

Golden hair caught the breeze, green eyes sharp and alert as they swept across the courtyard. At 183 centimeters tall, his presence was immediate—strong build, balanced posture, effortless confidence. He straightened his coat with a casual motion that felt practiced.

Murmurs spread quickly.

"That's him." "From Stella…?" "No wonder."

Some stared with open envy. Others watched with narrowed eyes. A few offered respectful nods. Aric accepted it all with easy confidence, lips curling faintly as if the attention were expected.

Jay's gaze lingered...only a second before moving on.

'Confidence built on expectation. Interesting.'

Not long after, another arrival drew quieter reactions.

Neva entered without spectacle.

No pause. No scan of the crowd. She walked forward as if the path had already been cleared, movements calm, expression unreadable. The murmurs followed her too—but softer, less daring.

"She passed with ease…" "They say she never misses."

Neva didn't look at anyone. Her focus stayed ahead, sharp and contained—like a blade still sheathed. Jay noticed how even the staff near the entrance watched her a fraction longer than the others.

Then something shifted again.

Not sound. Not movement.

Pressure.

Heads turned almost instinctively as another figure approached.

Mira stepped into view, sunlight catching softly along her features. Her expression held a confident calm, lips curved in a gentle smile that didn't waver beneath the weight of countless stares. Golden hair flowed behind her like light itself.

Hearts raced.

The reaction was immediate—almost involuntary. Conversations faltered. A few students took half-steps forward, drawn without thinking, only to stop short.

The guards around her moved subtly.

Not threatening.

Just enough.

Cold gazes swept the area, and the invisible boundary became unmistakable. No one crossed it.

Jay felt it too.

Mira's eyes passed over the crowd—and for a fleeting second, they brushed his. There was no recognition, no pause. Yet something tightened in his chest before easing just as quickly.

'It's her.'

A flash of the girl saving the puppy crossed his mind.

'So she's here for the second exam too.

Aric noticed her.

His gaze lingered longer than it should have, curiosity flickering before settling into something unreadable. Neva, standing a short distance away, merely shifted her stance, attention returning forward as if the moment held no weight at all.

Then came laughter.

Light. Unbothered.

Two figures walked in side by side, clearly unconcerned with the tension they disrupted.

"Hey, you're stepping on my foot." "That's because you're walking without paying attention."

The prodigy siblings from the east.

Rey and Moriko of Evangeline.

Green hair caught the sunlight beneath the open sky, sun-kissed skin marked faintly by years outdoors, brown eyes bright with mischief. They moved easily, bickering under their breath, laughing as if this were just another stroll through the forest paths of their homeland.

The crowd noticed.

"That's them…" "The prodigies from the east." "Rey and Moriko…"

Attention followed them, but the siblings didn't seem to care. Moriko nudged Rey's shoulder. Rey responded with an exaggerated sigh. They stopped near the edge of the group, still wrapped in their own world.

Jay watched them with quiet interest.

Different.

Completely.

Before the noise could rise again, a clear voice cut through the courtyard.

"Attention, everyone."

Aurelian staff stepped forward, their presence commanding silence without effort. Their uniforms bore the same insignia etched into the stone—clean, precise, unyielding.

"Congratulations on passing the first test," the staff member said, gaze sweeping across the gathered students. "Your performance has earned you the right to stand here today."

A pause.

"From this point onward, nothing will be given freely."

Behind them, the deep sound of shifting water rolled in.

The crowd turned as one.

A massive ship emerged into view, gliding toward the dock. Its structure was sleek and imposing, sails folded neatly, metal and wood fused into an elegant design. It moved with quiet authority, casting a long shadow over the courtyard as it came to a stop.

The staff member spread their hands wide.

"Brace yourselves," they said. "The journey to Aurora Isle begins now."

Jay exhaled slowly.

The tide had started to move.
