I walked over to Ema the very second I saw her standing in the doorway. My heart was slamming against my ribs so hard it felt painful. I felt a massive wave of surprise and relief crash through me at the same time. I didn't care who was watching. I reached out and pulled her into a tight hug. I wrapped my arms around her small frame and held her against me, burying my face in her hair. She smelled like home, and for a moment, the chaos of the room faded away.
"Why did you come here, Ema?" I asked her softly. My voice sounded rough and scratchy because of all the anger I had been holding back. I pulled back just enough to look at her face. "You should not have come here. I told you that I would come and get you myself when the time was right. I wanted to make sure it was completely safe for you first."
