The next morning, I walked through the front doors of the school with a heavy heart. My eyes moved quickly, scanning every hallway and every group of students. I looked at every face that passed me, hoping to see her familiar features. But Ema was not there. I stood by the lockers for a long time, watching the crowd. I didn't see her backpack slung over her shoulder. I didn't see her walking toward her usual classroom. There was no sign of her at all.
