On a Tuesday morning in early November, Emma received a package from Jordan.
She was at the kitchen table helping Lily practice writing her name when the doorman called to say a registered international package had arrived. Emma went downstairs to sign for it, curious. She was not expecting anything from overseas.
The package was small, wrapped carefully in brown paper. The return address showed Amman, Jordan. Emma carried it back upstairs, turning it over in her hands.
Alexander looked up from his laptop when she entered. "What is that?"
"I do not know. Something from Jordan." Emma opened the package carefully. Inside was a handwritten letter, a photo, and a small woven bracelet.
The letter was written in careful English.
Dear Emma,
My name is Fatima Hassan. You do not know me personally, but you saved my life four years ago.
