Three weeks after Morrison's conviction, Emma received a phone call she never expected.
"Mrs. Sterling, this is Janet Werner from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Victoria Ashford has requested you be added to her approved visitors list. She'd like to see you, if you're willing."
Emma sat in stunned silence. Victoria wanted to see her. The woman who'd terrorized her marriage, who'd orchestrated months of harassment, who'd tried to destroy everything Emma and Alexander had built—that Victoria wanted a visit.
"Can I think about it?" Emma asked.
"Of course. Ms. Ashford said there's no pressure, but she has something important to tell you. Something she thinks you need to hear."
After Janet hung up, Emma sat staring at her phone. Alexander found her like that twenty minutes later, Daniel on his hip, both of them fresh from a walk in the park.
"What's wrong?" Alexander asked, seeing her expression.
