Emma didn't sleep after the phone call.
She sat in the dark nursery, watching Daniel sleep, her mind racing through every possibility. Who would target the foundation? Who had the resources, the technical knowledge, the motive?
At 6 AM, Alexander found her still sitting there, her phone in her hand, dark circles under her eyes.
"Emma? Did you sleep at all?" He saw her expression and his face changed. "What happened?"
Emma told him about the call. The threats. The one-week deadline.
Alexander's face went from concern to fury in seconds. "They threatened the foundation? The women you protect?"
"They want me to shut it down completely. Dissolve it. Make it disappear. Or they release everything—donor information, client locations, all of it." Emma's voice was hollow. "Alexander, some of those women are hiding from men who tried to kill them. If their locations get out—"
"We call the police. The FBI. This is extortion, blackmail—"
