On Chen Mo's side, ever since Professor Zhou and his group had come to visit, he had noticed something strange.
Pichu's condition seemed a little off.
Originally, Chen Mo had planned to take Pichu with him into Anping City that afternoon to pick out suitable furniture. But when he brought it up, Pichu refused.
Yes—refused.
The Pichu that normally never left his side had actually turned down his invitation to go out. More importantly, even when Chen Mo brought out his ultimate trump card—promising to buy it ketchup—Pichu showed brief signs of temptation but still shook its head in the end.
With no other choice, Chen Mo went into the city by himself.
Yet when he finished ordering the furniture and returned home, something even stranger happened.
Pichu was nowhere to be seen.
In the backyard, only the Magikarp in the pond remained, blowing bubbles as it looked at him. Pichu—and even Pidgeotto, which usually rested in the tree outside the wall—had both vanished.
"Magikarp, do you know where Pichu and Pidgeotto went?"
"Gulu gulu…"
"They went out? Yeah, I figured that much…"
After spending time together—and thanks to his incomplete Aura power—Chen Mo could now manage some very basic communication with his three spirits. But once it came to anything more detailed, it still fell a bit short.
Just like now. The information he could get from Magikarp was extremely limited.
He only knew that Pichu and Pidgeotto had something to do, so they went out together and would come back in the evening. As for where they went, or exactly when they would return, Chen Mo had no idea.
"Forget it. I'm really a bit worried. Magikarp, you stay home—I'll go look for them."
After waiting for a while, Chen Mo couldn't hold himself back anymore. Just as he was about to head out, the doorbell suddenly rang.
If Pichu and Pidgeotto had come back, they definitely wouldn't be ringing the doorbell.
"That's strange… at this hour, who would be coming over?"
Despite his doubts, Chen Mo still got up and walked toward the living room.
The moment he opened the door, he saw a familiar figure standing outside the front gate, holding something in his arms.
"Ah Hui?"
Noticing that Ah Hui's state was clearly abnormal, Chen Mo hurried forward and quickly opened the gate.
"This is…?"
As he drew closer, Chen Mo finally saw it clearly. Wrapped carefully in a small blanket in Ah Hui's arms was a Caterpie.
Memories from the livestream instantly flashed through his mind.
Before Chen Mo could speak, Ah Hui pleaded in a hoarse voice,
"Brother Mo, can you save this child?"
At a glance, it was obvious that the Caterpie's condition was extremely poor. Chen Mo let out a soft sigh and looked up at Ah Hui.
"Come inside first."
"Um… can we come in together?"
From not far away, a man and a woman jogged over. The noticeably younger girl walked in front and spoke up, drawing Chen Mo's attention.
Chen Mo glanced at Ah Hui. Seeing that he didn't react, he thought for a moment, then nodded and let the two of them come inside as well.
"I roughly understand the situation now."
Based on Ah Hui's account and the feedback from [Detection Eye], Chen Mo had already confirmed Caterpie's condition.
It was not optimistic.
"Similar to some oviparous animals in our world, Pokémon Eggs are also extremely sensitive to their surrounding temperature and humidity during incubation. So to be blunt, the fact that Caterpie managed to hatch under those conditions is already nothing short of a miracle."
As he listened, Ah Hui unconsciously clenched his fists, his expression filled with tension. Off to the side, the flat-headed youth also lowered his head slightly upon hearing this.
Noting the changes in all three of them, Chen Mo didn't say much more and continued,
"It really did try very hard—very hard—to survive."
Chen Mo lifted his head and looked at Ah Hui.
"But I can't guarantee that I can save it. All I can do is try."
"Please… I'm begging you, Brother Mo."
"Mm. You stay here and watch over Caterpie. I'll be right back."
With that, Chen Mo quickly headed upstairs.
The living room fell silent once more. Xiao Cai looked toward the flat-headed youth on the other side.
After hesitating for a moment, the flat-headed youth gritted his teeth, about to say something—when Caterpie, lying on the blanket atop the table, let out a faint chirring sound.
Ah Hui hurried over. Looking at Caterpie's slightly opened eyes, his voice was filled with nervousness.
"Hang in there a little longer, Caterpie. Brother Mo will definitely find a way to save you."
Perhaps sensing Ah Hui's anxiety, Caterpie gently twitched the red feelers on its head and lightly touched Ah Hui's outstretched right hand.
Footsteps sounded from the staircase.
Chen Mo appeared once again. In his left hand was a small bowl, while in his right he held a diamond-shaped yellow block.
"Ah Hui, crush this into small pieces suitable for Caterpie to eat, then feed it to him."
Without asking any questions, Ah Hui did as told.
The yellow block wasn't particularly hard. With the help of a tool, it was easily crushed into small, suitable chunks.
"Here…"
Facing Ah Hui, Caterpie was extremely obedient. Following the guidance, it gently opened its mouth and swallowed the small yellow pieces one by one.
"Water."
"Thank you, Brother Mo."
After successfully taking all the yellow pieces, Caterpie lay back down on the blanket and closed its eyes again.
"Brother Mo…"
Ah Hui looked at Chen Mo, his expression still clearly uneasy.
"Be patient. The medicine won't take effect that quickly."
Chen Mo kept his attention on the feedback from [Detection Eye], but his heart didn't relax in the slightest.
The item he had just used was a Revive Shard, something that could be used on Pokémon on the brink of death in the games. But unlike the in-game fainted state caused by injuries, Caterpie's near-death condition was largely due to congenital deficiencies.
So whether the Revive Shard would work—and how effective it would be—Chen Mo himself had no way of knowing.
Time passed, second by second.
Ah Hui noticed that Caterpie, which had previously been barely breathing, now seemed to be breathing more steadily without anyone realizing it.
Everyone in the living room brightened instantly and turned to look at Chen Mo.
Seeing the mixture of anticipation and tension on their faces, Chen Mo glanced at the information returned by [Detection Eye], smiled slightly, and then nodded.
"It's basically out of the danger zone."
