Chapter 58 - Refusal

A Little Extra for You

Before Ah Hui ever mentioned the idea of Pidgey Courier, Chen Mo had basically never considered letting Pokémon integrate into society through such a method.

The reasons were simple enough: first, the constraints of ingrained thinking; second, the limits of his own abilities.

In Chen Mo's original vision, the primary goal of his first phase was to continuously carry out livestream-based education, gradually getting more people to accept Pokémon, so that more people like "Ah Hui" would appear in society.

This starting point was, in a way, similar to the path once taken by his predecessor—Arthas, the one chosen by Zekrom.

And after that?

Chen Mo planned to use the bonds formed between humans and Pokémon to create a cultural trend of Pokémon caretakers—or Pokémon Trainers, if you will. From there, by holding Pokémon battles and similar events, Pokémon culture would expand outward into society.

Of course.

Here, Chen Mo had to admit something honestly.

In many respects, he was just an ordinary person. His abilities were limited, and the ideas he came up with were clearly full of shortcomings. Many of them were little more than vague notions, without any concrete implementation plans—nothing nearly as clear or detailed as what was written in this official document.

And after reading this document, Chen Mo found himself thinking about many things.

The Pokémon listed by the authorities were few—only three to five—but Chen Mo clearly remembered that in the original Pokémon world, there were plenty of Pokémon that had close, even mutually dependent, relationships with humans.

Famous examples included Machoke moving companies, Magnemite and Voltorb working in power plants, the Growlithe line serving the Jenny family, and Chansey assisting the Joy family…

The entire living room fell silent, save for the occasional sound of Chen Mo turning a page.

Professor Zhou and his group did not rush him. They waited patiently.

After all, the longer he read, and the more seriously he read, the more it showed that he truly cared about the contents of the document.

Things were progressing in the expected direction.

While waiting, and feeling a bit bored, Hu Chengliang glanced through the nearby floor-to-ceiling window and began observing the scene in the backyard.

From the moment they entered the living room, he had already noticed Pichu in the backyard and the Magikarp in the swimming pool.

"It's just like what we saw on the livestream…"

Hu Chengliang looked at Pichu playing with Magikarp outside. Watching the fountain of water sprayed from Magikarp's mouth, he found himself momentarily lost in thought.

Just then, he suddenly saw Magikarp stop, as if saying something to Pichu. The playful expression on Pichu's little face quickly turned serious.

Soon after, Pichu scrambled out of the pool and ran toward the courtyard wall with quick little steps. It called upward, and a massive bird Pokémon soon descended.

"It's Pidgeotto…"

As someone who often watched the livestream, Hu Chengliang instantly recognized it.

After Pidgeotto landed, Pichu hurriedly said something to it, its gestures looking very much like pleading.

Pidgeotto's expression showed hesitation, but unable to withstand Pichu's repeated requests, it eventually nodded, seemingly agreeing to something.

And then—

Hu Chengliang suddenly saw Pidgeotto sharply turn its head, fixing him with an extremely piercing gaze.

That sword-like look caught Hu Chengliang completely off guard, startling him so badly that he shot up from the sofa.

"Hmm?"

Chen Mo paused his reading, and Professor Zhou turned to look at his student, confusion—and a rising hint of displeasure—in his eyes. Meanwhile, the man in the white lab coat wore a schadenfreude-filled smile.

"Uh… sorry, sorry…"

Realizing that everyone had turned to look at him, Hu Chengliang scratched his head awkwardly and hurriedly sat back down.

Chen Mo turned around and immediately saw Pidgeotto and Pichu in the yard.

Understanding what had likely just happened, Chen Mo quickly explained,

"Sorry about that. That Pidgeotto is my Pokémon. It usually doesn't like staying in the yard and prefers resting in the trees outside."

As he spoke, Chen Mo also looked at Pichu and Pidgeotto with some confusion.

Perhaps noticing the attention from inside, Pichu turned toward Chen Mo's direction and gave an intentionally cute, shy smile.

"That little guy… please don't be afraid. It probably came down because of Pichu. There's no need to worry."

"It's fine, we understand," Professor Zhou replied with a smile.

The room returned to calm once more.

Having just been glared at by his mentor, Hu Chengliang behaved himself for a while—but his peripheral vision still couldn't help drifting back toward the yard.

By then, Pidgeotto had already returned to somewhere out of sight, while Pichu had gone back to the pool to play with Magikarp.

Finally.

When Chen Mo closed the document and placed it on the table, Professor Zhou spoke sincerely.

"Comrade Xiao Mo, as the initiator of the idea of 'harmonious coexistence between humans and Pokémon,' we would like to hear your opinion—if you're willing to trust us."

What had to come would always come.

But after reading this document, and feeling the sincerity behind the authorities' efforts, Chen Mo was no longer as nervous as before.

"To be honest, I don't really have any objections. Professor Zhou, the plans you've made are already very good. I'm just an ordinary person when it comes to business—I can't really help much. However…"

Chen Mo paused slightly before continuing.

"I can recommend some Pokémon to you. Their personalities and traits would definitely make them suitable additions to this list."

At these words, smiles appeared on everyone's faces except for the bodyguard.

This was an excellent sign.

Professor Zhou and Officer Wang exchanged a glance.

Then Professor Zhou slowly said,

"Actually, I have an idea. I wonder if Comrade Xiao Mo would be willing to accept it. This old man would like to act as your recommender and invite you to join our Monster Research and Countermeasure Bureau."

"I know you have many ideas, and our bureau is the place with the greatest chance of turning those ideas into reality."

"Of course, I know that young people nowadays often have certain misunderstandings about official organizations. But here, I can promise you—while there may be disagreements due to differing opinions within our bureau, there will absolutely be none of the sordid things you might imagine."

Everyone looked at Chen Mo—including the bodyguard who seemed indifferent to almost everything—waiting for his answer.

At this moment,

Chen Mo thought about many things. He met their gazes, especially that of Professor Zhou. On the old man's weathered face was an expression full of expectation.

But…

Chen Mo let out a quiet sigh in his heart.

"I'm sorry, Professor Zhou. I can't accept your invitation."
