Chapter 40 - A Turning Point

"Ah Hui?"

Chen Mo looked puzzled.

"How do you know my phone number?"

"Heh."

Ah Hui chuckled on the other end of the line and asked in return,

"Mo-bro, weren't you looking for a new place to move into a while back? Do you remember leaving your number at a place called Yingchun Lake?"

The hint was more than enough—Chen Mo immediately recalled what had happened that day.

Because of Pichu, the house-hunting process hadn't gone smoothly. Still, some agents hadn't rejected him outright, saying they needed to consult the landlord and property management first. Yingchun Lake had been one of those places.

After not hearing back for a long time, Chen Mo had assumed the deal was basically dead. But now, it seemed there might still be a chance.

"Don't tell me… Ah Hui, you're the owner of that place?"

"How could that be?"

Before Chen Mo could even catch his breath, Ah Hui continued,

"But you're not far off. My family's in real estate, and we have some cooperation with that area. So when I happened to hear about a young guy looking for housing while carrying a 'monster,' my first thought was you, Mo-bro."

No wonder you're so rich…

Chen Mo glanced at Pidgeotto, then spoke calmly into the phone.

"You didn't call just to confirm whether this number was mine, did you? If there's something else, just say it—I'm a bit busy right now."

"No rush, Mo-bro. I was watching the livestream too. I'm calling this time specifically because of Pidgeotto."

Ah Hui went on,

"If I remember correctly, when you were explaining the Pidgey line to us before, you mentioned that Pidgey have an extremely strong sense of direction—that no matter how far they fly from their nest, they can always find their way back. Right?"

"Yeah, that's right. It's a species trait of Pidgey."

Chen Mo nodded, though he was confused about why Ah Hui was suddenly bringing this up.

"Well, here's the thing,"

Ah Hui finally stopped beating around the bush.

"I have a friend—really, not made up—who's starting a business. One of her projects is related to courier delivery. When she saw Pidgey, she suddenly had this idea: could Pidgey be trained to act as delivery couriers?"

"Huh?"

Chen Mo froze for a moment.

Ah Hui didn't stop.

"Didn't you say it yourself, Mo-bro? Pokémon are highly intelligent. So when my friend suggested this, I thought about it too. If Pidgey could be taught to recognize certain distinctive markers, and customers were instructed to hang those markers in visible places where Pidgey could spot them, then Pidgey should be able to handle some relatively simple deliveries."

"And if that works," Ah Hui continued, "then your problem would be solved too."

"The conflict between Spearow and Pidgey is fundamentally because they live in the same forest. If we bring all the Pidgey into the city to be raised, then even if Fearow recovers and comes back, it won't matter—because the two sides will no longer share the same environment."

"Of course, Mo-bro, you don't need to worry about the Pidgey's future living conditions. My friend will take full responsibility for raising them. Work will be arranged in shifts, with each Pidgey working no more than four hours a day—less for the younger ones. As for housing, that's even less of a concern. She said wherever she lives, the Pidgey will live too. And let me tell you quietly—her places are, at the very least, way better than Yingchun Lake."

Chen Mo didn't even get a chance to interrupt. Ah Hui laid out an incredibly detailed plan for the Pidgey's future—benefits and treatment so generous that Chen Mo couldn't find a single flaw.

After a long pause, Chen Mo finally couldn't help himself.

"Ah Hui, hold on. Forget everything else for a moment—are you sure society as it is now can accept Pidgey acting as delivery couriers?"

"Don't worry, Mo-bro. My friend already consulted the authorities—there's no major issue. As for everything else, the service area won't be large at first, just within Anping City. She said she'll explain the situation to customers in advance, and Pidgey will only handle deliveries for those who agree."

At that point, Ah Hui suddenly chuckled mysteriously again.

"As for whether customers will agree… you can just look at the chat."

Chen Mo turned his head, confused, and looked at the barrage of comments on the screen.

[Agree—how could we not agree?!]

[As an Anping citizen who's watched Mo-bao's stream for so long, I can't speak for other Pokémon, but for Pidgeotto and its kin, I trust them 100%. Hui-bro's friend is amazing!]

[Just imagining it feels incredible—on a sunny morning, you open your window half-asleep, and there's a Pidgey delivering your package, perched on your balcony, tilting its head while waiting for you to sign. That moment alone would heal my soul.]

[So jealous!!! I'm not from Anping City! I want Pidgey delivery too! The couriers near my place are awful and never deliver to the door!]

[What if I'm not from Anping—can I still move there in time?]

[Honestly, as an Anping citizen, I agree unconditionally!]

[Pidgey Express, open already—I can't wait!]

[Please let Pidgey delivery be affordable so even poor folks like me can enjoy it, I'm begging you!]

Among the flood of comments, Chen Mo could barely find anyone expressing opposition. Especially the people from Anping City—they were showing an unprecedented level of enthusiasm.

And this inevitably brought Pichu's role in the earlier police standoff to mind.

After days of continuous TV and online news coverage, some Anping residents had already begun to change their views on Pokémon. As for the people in Chen Mo's livestream—under the combined influence of Chen Mo himself and official authorities—their attitudes had shifted even more thoroughly.

In Chen Mo's vision, humans and Pokémon were destined to live in the same environment someday—helping each other—rather than remaining divided between "wild" and "urban" worlds as they were now.

Listening to Ah Hui's proposal, a feeling slowly rose in Chen Mo's heart.

If Pidgey truly could integrate into city life in this way…

Then perhaps this would be a turning point.

A turning point that could accelerate the change in how humans fundamentally viewed Pokémon.
